Boston Celtic fans meet the dysfunctional Darius Miles

October 02 08

NBA news mixed with analysis ...

Their news Darius Miles says he has no clue what made him fail a drug test that will cause him to serve a 10-game suspension if he makes it through training camp with the Boston Celtics.

Speaking at length Tuesday for the first time since his suspension was announced by the NBA over the summer, Miles said he never took diet pills — the over-the-counter medication in which the banned stimulant he tested positive for, phentarmine, is most commonly found — and had never taken any medication other than what was prescribed by Portland’s doctors and trainers.

"I wish I knew. I really do wish I knew, but [Celtics president] Danny Ainge told me ’leave it alone,’ so I left it alone," Miles said. (ESPN linked by HoopsVibe News Services)

Our quick Analysis: He admitted his sins in Portland. So, even though I was a lifelong Blazers fan, I forgave Darius Miles and vowed to give him a fair shake in Boston.

Nothing but an open mind from yours truly. My reasoning was simple: any teenager who spends significant time with the Clippers is bound to have issues.

Back then, Miles was like a child actor in Nikes. Except Staples Center and owner Donald Sterling were ruining him, not Sunset Boulevard and a sven gali agent.

The former lottery pick is pushing my forgiveness. The world champion Celtics signed Miles even though he was injured for several seasons and suspended ten regular season games for using the banned diet drug phentarmine.

Recently, the forward denied using the supplement and told reporters he had no idea what he was suspended for. However, Miles did know Boston GM Danny Ainge told him not to push the issue and to stay silent. He mentioned as much to reporters, too.

Of course, Miles failed to keep quiet. Only the entire world knows his saga. Right now, NBA head office is likely reviewing his comments. They’ll talk to Ainge –the executive who gave him another chance- about this supposed warning. Then the David Stern ‘Mafia’ will decide whether to publicly address the situation.

My intent isn’t to pile on Miles. I’d like to see things work in Boston. But the talented swing must exercise better judgement on and off court. Or he’ll be out of chances and out of the NBA.

Hi Young Chris. Thanks for the comment. How about Miles not commenting on the matter. If he is accepting the suspension, then just stay quiet and accept it. Don’t bring a distraction to the club. Of course, Stern and the suits at head office won’t change their mind. So stay quiet and ready to play. Just a thought. Thank you for posting and reading! .

I believe what he meant when he said that Ainge told him to leave it alone is that Ainge advised him not to appeal the suspension, not to keep his mouth shut on taking the drug. Of course he would want people to believe that he never took the banned substance. Why would anyone want to keep quiet and let the media make you out to be someone that you’re not? .

Hi no-name poster ... thanks for reading. Exactly my point. AInge`s comments were not to say anything and to leave the negative test alone. So Miles speaks out publicly ... not exactly keep quiet, right ... .

Are you serious?? This is what you write about. The guy simply stated that he did not know what caused him to fail. As far the Ainge comment to leave it alone that is easily justified. Ainge probaly didn’t want to draw any negative attention or cause any type of distraction. .

cheers Oly, well put, i can see your optimism with the celtics being a good fit to turn his game around. Besides Doc Rivers, which other coach / system do you see getting the best out of Miles? Phil Jackson is legendary with his "getting into a player’s head" approach for example. .

Hi Melvinator, Thanks for commenting. I think that is fair. His talent is really on-paper, and whatever success he has had is mostly because of those physical gifts. I will likely change the wording. I think AInge signed him for those physical gifts. He hopes Miles can use that potential and contribute. He is in the right environment with savvy vets and a got-your-back player`s coach in Doc. That said, at a certain point a player, and person, is what he is. And sometimes can`t change his essence. That could be the case with D-Miles. We shall see. Thanks for dropping a good point. .

Hi Oly, i’m not sure i would rate miles as a "talented swing". Aside from some hops and the right length/size, miles doesnt play basketball. He can’t shoot , doesnt bother to defend and for his jumping and length, doesn’t get enough defensive boards. Miles is a flop and i can’t understand why Ainge or any other GM would want to take on a negative, lazy and pill popping Miles. .

Hi Alexa, Thanks for reading. I totally agree. You want things to work for Miles. But he sure is making it hard. he essentially threw Ainge under the bus with his comments, ya know ... Cheers ... .

I really wish him the best in Boston and I hope it works out. He’s a gifted player. He clearly needs a lesson in public relations, though. .
