Boston Celtics Wrong To Consider Larry Brown, Doc Rivers Perfect For Ray Allen, Kevin Garnett, & Paul Pierce

September 24 07

The Philadelphia Inquirer reports on Larry Brown turning down an offer from the Boston Celtics to join Doc Rivers’ staff:

Glass wouldn’t confirm or deny the story in SI.com stating that Brown almost accepted a position to become an assistant coach with the Boston Celtics. It reported that Brown turned the job down after talking to Sixers chairman Ed Snider, who persuaded him to remain with the team.

My Quick Take: I’m surprised by this rumor. Recently, Boston GM Danny Ainge has been making all the right moves, acquiring Ray Allen and Kevin Garnett, and then signing James Posey as a free agent. But nothing would be gained by bringing in Larry Brown-even as an assistant coach. Here’s why:

  • Brown, the nomad sideline boss, has alienated his last three teams. Philadelphia recently rehired him, but the 76ers weren’t sad to see him leave several years ago. Detroit owner Bill Davidson questioned whether Brown was in fact a ‘decent person.’ And his season in New York was a disaster.
  • Brown can no longer relate to players. In fact, it seems that he goes out of his way to pick petty fights with players.
  • Brown would compromise Rivers’ authority. Players wouldn’t know who to listen to. Some would wonder if their Hall of Fame assistant is the coach in-waiting.

Sure, Brown can coach. Nobody is denying that he’s the best teacher in pro basketball. But the Celts are a veteran club. Allen, Garnett, and Paul Pierce need a manager, not a hands-on sideline boss.

This rumor raises eyebrows regarding Rivers’ status as coach. The likable, players-first sideline boss recently received an extension, so why even make an offer to the controversial and well-traveled Brown?

The good news is that Brown is staying in Philly. The bad news is that Boston’s front office, after a summer of hitting home runs, is still capable of striking out badly.

Hey,I’m writing with the Canyon-News in Beverly Hills and wondering your official opinion on the Kobe-Laker saga. Do you think the Lakers will just stay pat and have Kobe discontented? Why do you think they’re not appeasing him? He’s not getting any younger?Thanks,Jared310-913-5439 .

I dont understand how some boston fans try to rip danny ainge as a gm still.... seems to me that he has done an amazing job turning that joke of a franchise around in the 4 years he’s been there from a deadend franchise on a path to nowhere that had bad contracts and already reached its ceiling (2nd round in a then terrible eastern conference).... and has managed to turn that into a championship caliber roster with a core of 3 superstars. The guy landed Kevin Garnett and Ray Allen without losing Paul Pierce. He should probably win exec of the year just for that.I hate boston, but I wont lie to myself that team is gonna be amazing. They are loaded for a title run this year and are set up to fill out the rotation next summer for a SERIOUS title run, so theyre gonna be even more loaded for year 2 after next full summer...... if they were in the west they would be one of the elite teams among phx and them, in the east they are gonna be a serious powerhouse and should roll thru it..... I do hate the celtics but I am happy for Ray and Kevin and even Pierce, and they are the near sole reason for me getting league pa-------this year for the very first time. I think they could win it all, not just the east. They are gonna be a very special team around those 3 superstars for the next 4 or 5 years. .

They probably don’t need Larry Brown, but getting him wouldn’t have been the "strike out" you described.

The lines of communication have always been wide open between Ainge and Rivers, and if there was any drama from Brown, they’d have likely been able to get a hold of the situation. They have handled most of their personal issues whether it was Blount, Ricky, O’Brien, Walker, or Vin Baker.

Rivers is pretty mediocre as a coach, but we will see what he has when given great talent. We Celtic fans shouldn’t be holding our breath. They already picked up Thibideau, so if Rivers can’t get the job done, someone capable will be ready in his place. .

Yep. Doc needs help. He admit it. This is a new team wanting a championship and a help from a Larry Brown championship experience was logical enough though i think Brown does not want to step down as an assistant. Thats the bottom line. Ego was a part of this disappoinment. .

That would have been a death wish for Papa Doc, had Larry accepted his offer. Plus I can’t see Larry as an assistant coach, he likes to control things, and when it doesn’t go his way he hurries out of town to the next available opportunity. If Doc is that desperate just put Danny Ainge on the bench, he is a better coach than a GM anyway .

Doc Rivers is a horrible coach. I’d be excited to see most anyone else. Pierce doesn’t like him and he could never work out a rotation. Plus he never played some of the young guys who needed a chance. I’m glad the Celtics are looking. I’d hate to waste one or two of the few good years left for the new Big Three .
