Charles Barkley Versus Allen Iverson: The Philly Legends Still Have Beef

December 09 07

The Denver Post’s Woody Paige reports on Charles Barkley bashing Allen Iverson:

The Round Mound of Rebound has been ripping the Dior of Score Galore - again. After Allen Iverson scored 51 points, with eight assists, against the Lakers and before he scored 35, with 12 assists, against the Mavericks, Charles Barkley groused on TV that Iverson was a one-dimensional player who didn’t make his teammates and team better. This Phamous Philly Stake-in-the-Heart Pheud has been going on for almost a decade. Barkley, the player, never cared much for Iverson, the kid. Barkley, the commentator, still doesn’t respect Iverson, the veteran.

My Quick Take: Barkley’s recent comments are about his ego. These two Philly legends have history. Ten years ago, Sir Charles, the wily veteran, and Iverson, the emerging star, exchanged insults.

Barkley said of Iverson: "I can’t stand that guy." Iverson said of Barkley: "He’s nothing." (Denver Post)

Barkley should be careful. He was a great player, but some, like Scottie Pippen, claim Barkley never made those around him better, either.

In fact, Pippen once called Barkley “fat” and “lazy”, claiming the Round Mound of Rebound lacked dedication. And, frankly, the Chicago legend has six championship rings to back-up his comments.

Iverson’s game, because of his height, does take time to appreciate. And too often, teammates rely on A.I. to create offense with the shot clock winding down.

Well, Barkley’s game was different, too. After all, how many 6-5 power forwards have dominated the NBA? And how many times did he receive the rock with just a few ticks on the shot clock?

Barkley has chosen to ignore what he has in common with Iverson. But surely he can appreciate The Answer’s heart.

Even ‘Play the Right Way’ Larry Brown looked past Iverson’s deficiencies and fell in love with his passion, toughness, and desire. And George Karl, Denver’s old school sideline boss, has praised Iverson’s professionalism.

Barkley should check his ego and take another look at Iverson. There is much to like about the tiny guard’s game.

How can Bark say A.I. is one-dimensional at this point in his career? A player at Iverson’s age doesn’t last this long playing his style of play if he’s not "multi-dimensional." Iverson was the missing piece on the Nuggets and his addition made them a constant championship contender... up from a constant 8th seed contender. Just look at all of A.I.’s "dimensions." He’s unguardable. He’s still one of the fastest players in the NBA. He’s a league leader in points+assists. He’s the only Nugget who plays D. He never stops fighting. .

Barkley should stop bieng such a dick. Iverson isn’t selfish. Since he came to Denver he took a back seat to Melo and hasn’t complained. Melo isn’t complaining about the way Iverson is playing.Proof is the Camby blog on nba.com. .

bsrkley is a jealous old man lucky to have a job. i wouldnt listen to a word of his BS. just cause he could play the game doesnt mean he can evaluate it. sir charles is a dope who is lucky that someone keeps putting him on TV. otherwise he would be washing my 22s .

So now Haslem= to Barkley? Big men are capable of setting up teammates just as well as guards, especially when Barkley had great pieces around him. He should have had two rings atleast, but he couldn’t lead his team. Iverson plays with heart, yeah he may have been immature and selfish early on, but it’s not fair for "Bark Bark" to come at Iverson now, especially with the way he has been playing right now .

I think charles was right about the fact that Ivreson does not gethis teammates better even though hes one of the greatest.. Besides comparing barkley and iverson impact on teammates on the court is not fair, as their post were strictly different , barkley as a power forward had to grab rebounds and make put backs under the rim whereas iverson as a guard has to create for himself and for his teammates as well. Somebody has to tell me how a power forward could get his teammates better!!! his low court position does not permit him a good vision of the game!! could you imagine haslem creating plays ???? Hell no !!! .

Iverson is one of the most outstanding players that ever played. I didn’t like his game earlier-it was a one man show but he grew up to be a great player. So what he hasn’t got a ring maybe he’ll get one & even if he doesn’t his game will still be remembered. And Barkley is full of s#!t he hasn’t done more than A.I and when it comes to choose whos game you’d like to watch Iverson comes 1st no doubt anytime. Barkley talks loud but not always smart. .

Does Barkley ever shut up? I am so sick of hearing this guy talk. All he ever does is talk about how controversial he is and how everyone should bow down to his greatness. He’s nothing short of a pain in the butt. If you were to ask me which player I had to take, I’d say Iverson every single time. Barkley is a hack, a jerk, and his ego keeps him from ever saying anything intelligent. .

Charles Barkely must be Bi-Polar. I’ve always seen him on TNT talking about how much he RESPECTS Iverson and how great he is, now he’s ripping him for the way he passes the ball? Some of the things he says are funny but sometimes he just comes off as a HATER, which is what he looked like the other night talking about Iverson. Him and Kenny Smith BOTH needed to be SLAPPED in the FACE for that. ERNIE look like he was about to slap them. I have to say that IVERSON has some tough skin to put up with the BS he constantly puts up with from people. That guy has to be the most SCRUTINIZED player in the game. Respect. .

I also think Barkley’s comments are offside-he hasn’t achieved anything more than Iverson! .

I agree Oly! Plus I’m starting to think Charles ’I’ll never eat brocoli" is becoming full of himself, being known as a man not afraid to speak up. Sometimes the things that come out his mouth are ignorant, sort like what hes is saying about A.I. now. If I had to chose between Charles and A.I. in their primes, i’m going with A.I. all the way .
