Could Dwyane Wade Really Leave Miami Heat?

January 14 08

The Chicago Tribune’s Sam Smith reports on Dwyane Wade possibly leaving Miami:

Don’t believe Wade is in Miami for life.Yes, he has three years left on his extension, and no, the Heat isn’t about to trade him. Not now, anyway. But no true star of the game — which Wade had become — has gone through anything like this. Ever. Stars flame out, and Wade’s people know this. The public’s memory is short. New stars evolve.Riley has a reputation around the NBA for wearing out his stars with his grueling practices and power game. Many believe his tactics shortened Patrick Ewing’s career.

Wade can become a free agent after the 2009-10 season, which is when Ben Wallace’s deal ends. The Bulls could be a major free-agent player then, and while it is a long time to wait, Wade will be just 28 and in his prime. And as the Bulls have seen, it’s tough to get a star.

My Quick Take: Two words for Miami Heat fans: code red. Dwayne Wade leaving South Beach as an unrestricted free agent in three seasons is the worst scenario.

Everybody else is expendable. Shaquille O’Neal can bounce; Coach Riley can flee the mess he created to the sanity of the front office. In fact, both moves improve the franchise.

However, D-Wade bolting changes everything. Miami, without their star, would be starting over. Think expansion squad. And think of the publicity hit.

Eighteen months ago journalists and fans would’ve been committed for proposing such a thought. Wade and Miami seemed a perfect match. They won an NBA Title and the off-court, marketing thing worked too.

But Smith is right to throw this idea out. First off, he’s the legendary beat writer for the Chicago Bulls. Wade is also from the Windy City. I’m guessing Smith knows something we don’t.

Also, Miami looks dysfunctional. And dysfunctional is worse than being bad. They mortgaged everything for their NBA Title and are paying a heavy price.

The worry is whether they’ll pay the ultimate price and watch Wade leave.

Wade is in a similar situation with Kobe Bryant, but kobe is just an all star, hes got confidence in his game, but both of them need either one GOOD player on their team or more all around players. Which they both don’t have.. Wade or Kobe would be better if they were traded with either a team liek bulls, or maybe pistons, or link up with dwight howard somehow .

I to have heard about the Globetrotter deal. I think he will strongly consider this since in a controlled game it can really let him choose how much contact and ware and tear he has to indure. Plus the fans world wide could see Flash in action. He is very interested. "Fall down 7 times...stand up 8"....and then trot the world! .

Wade is a winner. He won once but thats not enough. He’ll go were ever it takes to win. But he’s also a leader. Gota keep that in mind. He wont be going to the cavs or any team with one singular superstar. .

Hi Belgian Guy: Thanks for reading. Thanks for the question. I agree with much of what you say. Wade either modifies his game like Jordan did and becomes less of penetrator and more of a jumpshooter or goes elsewhere with another star. Driving, drawing contact, and getting to the foul line has taken its toll. For Wade, preserving his health either in Miami or elsewhere is key. Thanks again! Oly. .

I have a close contact at the Globetrotters and they are in discussions with the Heat and making him an Opposing player on the Washington Generals. Stay tuned...this deal is about to heat up! .

I mentioned that in my latest article, "Rumors Abound as Miami Heat Fizzle." Stephen A. Smith was the first person I heard it from, and it actually seems logical. But a lot can happen from now until the time his contract expires. .

Oly, a question for you: dont you think wade is a bit scared about already being so beat up at such a young age? in other words, that he really wants to be on a team with other stars, so he doesnt have to carry the load? I think that could also be factor in wades decisions, not only the losing and winning stuff: no way he’s gonna survive a whole season with him carrying the load by himself; he knows that, so i’m thinking that he’ll leave the heat for a team which allows him to spread the weight....nice article. .
