Danny Ainge Wrong To Blame Paul Pierce If Boston Celtics Fail

July 06 07

Dan Shaughnessy reports on Boston GM Danny Ainge putting the pressure on superstar Paul Pierce:

So, who assumes all the pressure now?

Danny Ainge or Paul Pierce?

We know it won’t be Doc Rivers. It never is. But Ainge has a bull’s-eye on his back after last week’s moves and he’s throwing everything at the size-15 feet of Pierce. He’s telling us that he got Ray Allen for Paul. And now it’s up to Paul to deliver the goods.

Ainge has overhauled the entire roster (except for Pierce) since taking over the Celtics. He has talked about a "vision," while appearing to be blind a good deal of the time. He has enjoyed a good relationship with the media and been spared the torchings that singed the likes of Lou Gorman, Rick Pitino, and Dan Duquette. He has presided over a train wreck of a team that won only 24 games last season.

When he made the deal for Allen on draft night, the Celtics were graded as big losers by many pundits and a significant portion of the dwindling Celtic constituency.

Reached in Utah via telephone this week, Ainge defended his professional life. And put everything on Pierce.

"The gist of the criticism has been that we’re wishy-washy in our plans and not consistent with our public message," Ainge acknowledged. "I don’t think that’s right. From the very beginning, we’ve tried to accumulate assets. We decided two years ago we weren’t trading Paul Pierce. We were going to try to surround Paul Pierce with at least another significant player — hopefully two — to give him the best opportunity to win. That has been our public statement pretty consistently. I don’t want just any veteran player. The fact that we were making a run at Kevin Garnett and Ray Allen is exactly what has been in our plan. So, it’s very consistent with what we’ve been trying to do.

"My owners are very happy. My players are excited. Al Jefferson. Paul Pierce. And Ray Allen. They feel rejuvenated, optimistic, and confident in the team. And my coach is thrilled about it. I can see the opposing views of the deal. We discussed all these different views, although we never did discuss the fact that Ray Allen was Dominique. The vision now is to try to surround Paul and Ray and Al with the best chance to win."

There you go, Paul Pierce. You told your agent you wanted the Celtics to make a deal for an established star. They fulfilled your request. Now it’s up to you to deliver the goods. If the Celtics aren’t good now, it’ll be your fault. Not Danny’s fault or Doc’s fault. Paul Pierce’s fault.

My Quick Take: Pierce won’t be happy reading this column. Danny Ainge has run the Boston Celtics without a plan. True, he’s accumulated assets. But last time I checked assets were things accountants balanced or fantasy GMs collected.

Ainge, as an NBA GM, must do more than collect parts and pieces. He needs to have a vision for how these parts and pieces will fit together. Until now, Ainge has had little vision, throwing players together like a pot of gumbo soup. The results haven’t been tasty.

But Ainge, finally, formulated a plan. He decided, after much flip-flopping, to build around Pierce and acquired All-Star Ray Allen from Seattle in a draft day trade. Ainge deserves credit for bringing in a talented player.

’The Truth’ and ’Jesus Shuttleworth’ together. It sounds great. Literally. Pierce and Allen should produce on-the-court, too.

However, Ainge was too quick to shift the pressure towards Pierce. One trade won’t make up for his disappointing tenure in Boston. And one injury-prone season won’t make Pierce the scapegoat in Boston.

Ainge is on the hook if the Pierce-Allen experiment fails. It sounds like he knows it, too.

Idiot, if you bothered to read the actual quotes from Ainge, you’d notice that no actual "pressure" is being shifted anywhere, especially on Pierce. Go back to school. .

I like Rondo and Gerald but dont think they could have got a quality big man for what they gave. Although I was actually in favor of the trade when it included Robert Swift. Unfortunately Allen’s tenure in Boston will be measured in games, not years (less than 200). It will be similar to Larry Anderson (25 innings of him for Jeff Bagwell). I would have prefered Noah, B Wright, Yi, even Hawes. .

gerald’s ceiling is way higher than roy’s is. he’s way more talented and way better, period. gerald’s gonna be a superstar, forget roy they were better off getting rondo anyways and they landed him. rondo green and big al are the future, thats a very bright future. .

i thought they did good keeping their great young players and ray allen was a good move (perfect fit on the floor and as a leader). but they coulda done better. they shoulda traded for a big and just started gerald greeen at the 2. everyone in boston hope he gets WAY more playing time as he is too good and too talented for anyone to even slow him down. he’s gonna be a superstar he’s just young, he’s so ridiculously good but they dont give him a chance. here’s to hoping that they do! wish they traded what they did for a decent big instead of ray and just started gerald at 2, but whatever. hope they use gerald as the 6th man and ray can teach him! go celts! .

I wouldnt mind seeing them trade Pierce for a big man if they get at least 85% return value. I really was hoping for Pierce for Okafor’s draft rights a few years ago (I thought he would go #1 before I knew about Howard). I wonder if Pierce for Okafor is remotely possible now. .

I agree. Long term they would probably be better off. I know Ainge wants to win now so I think he must have something else up his sleeve. Otherwise it would have been better getting Yi and keep building. In about a week we will know better because the deal making will begin. The C’s are usually pretty good about keeping things quiet until the last hour or so before the trade, so nobody has any idea what they’re up to. I would have to guess that the deal for Allen signifies they have a deal in the works for a decent big man. Who knows, PP could be the person they’re trading. Ray Allen, Big Al and Garnett would be a darn good trio. Better than Paul, Wally and Al. .

I was firmly in Ainge’s corner and willing to give him a mulligan for last years draft fiasco. But I think they would have been better off keeping #5 and taking Yi. Better to swing for the fence rather than build a team with an upside of 500-550% and zero chance of winning a title. Of course this would have required 2-3 more year s of patience - which Ainge and Rivers dont have. So once again the Celtics fans get screwed by the short term interests of management ala Gaston Sr, Gaston Jr, Pitino, Obrien... .

I never said Green and Allen were better than Roy, but last summer they needed point guards not 2 guards, so they never would have picked Roy. They had Allen and Green so during the draft the probably didn’t think Roy would end up better than either of them. Believe me, I wanted them to take Rudy g--more than anything, but I understand why they didn’t. Ainge didn’t want to wait forever for the C’s to be good. They can be good this summer by trading Ratliff’s contract. .

Greg Kite, you can’t be serious. Brandon Roy would NOT be playing behind Gerald Green and Tony Allen. Are you insane? .

I have to agree with you Greg, as much as I hate the Celtics. They do have a young athletic team and would be a threat to finish .500 if healthy. They are making some of the right moves with the cards they have been dealt. It is not easy building a team like Phoenix, San Antonio etc. But I think they are building a proper mix of youth and veterans. They are still a couple of years away. .

Ainge isn’t a horrible GM. He took over a horrible team. What’s the worst move he’s made? Probably last year’s trade with Roy. But where would Roy have fit on the C’s? Behind Pierce, Tony Allen and Gerald? If he was on Boston he wouldn’t have been Rookie of the Year. Now they have Ratliff’s contract that could net them an All Star. Roy is good but I see him as limited defensively. Because of Ratliff’s contract they are in talks for guys like KG, Gasol and J.O. If they had Raef’s contract they wouldn’t be in those talks. The second worst trade he made, supposedly, was shipping out Antoine for Raef. Every team Antoine has been on since has booed him just as much if not more than Boston did. He’s the worst defensive PF in the league and the most inefficient offensive player in the league. It was a blessing getting rid of him. And Raef was actually productive for a few years so it wasn’t a total loss.Danny has made some great draft picks, Jefferson at 15, Green at 18, D West, Tony Allen and Perk in the 20s and Gomes at 50. He’s tops in the league at the draft.Blank statements about Ainge being horrible lack insight. List his bad moves against his good moves and you’ll see that he has done a good job with the cruddy team that he inherited.Unless you’d rather still have a starting 5 of Delk, Pierce, Eric Williams, Walker and Battie. They are one trade away from being the best team in the East. How does that make Ainge a bad GM? .

Pierce is overrated. Ainge is becoming a horrible GM like Mr. Thomas and Mr. McHale. Dan Shaughnessy has always been a fruitball. The whole Celtics organization is a mess. Doc Rivers why did you go to Boston? These team will fail just like they do every year. I bet they’ll have another excuse ready to. Like Len Bias, Rick Pitino, not getting the top picks, and all other kinds of B.S. Those 16 championships are becoming an after thought in Boston. My Last Take: If you wanna watch and support sports in the Boston area, go watch championship teams that have won this decade Patroits, Red Sox. I even rather watch the Sun of the WNBA, than watch the Celtics play more bad basketball .
