Does Ramon Sessions replace Ricky Rubio in Minnesota’s backcourt?

September 05 09
Breaking NBA news mixed with analysis …

NBA news: “The waiting and wondering is finally over for restricted free agent Ramon Sessions, who agreed Friday to sign a four-year, $16 million offer sheet with the Minnesota Timberwolves.” (Chris Sheridan, ESPN)

My Quick Reaction: Adios Ricky!

By tendering Ramon Sessions an offer sheet, the Minnesota Timberwolves are clearly moving on without Ricky Rubio. After all, Jonny Flynn, a 2009 lottery pick, and Sessions, a budding star, give the club a young 1-2 punch at lead guard.

This was expected. When Rubio left the Timberwolves at the alter for FC Regal Barcelona last week, President David Kahn warned the Spanish sensation his standing with the team could change.

And it did.

Good on Kahn and Minnesota for taking action. In Sessions, they get immediate help (provided Milwaukee doesn’t match the offer sheet). He can score, distribute, start, or provide a spark off the bench.

At 23, the tiny table-setter will grow with the Timberwolves’ blue-chip core of Flynn, Kevin Love, and Al Jefferson. And Sessions is cheap; $4 million per annum is a drop in the bucket for a sixth man of the year candidate with upside.

Now Minnesota can trade Rubio’s rights on their terms. Best of all, winning the Sessions sweepstakes shows improving is the mandate under Kahn.

I like what they are doing... I made a comment on another board that Minnesota needs help now, not in 2-3 years. This validates that they were aware of that, I think they will see how Flynn does this year, and look to move Rubio next summer, when many other moves are being made. They are in no rush to move him, because they might not get the value they want back. .

Hi GM for Hire and Jake. Thanks for commenting. I agree Sessions is a great pick-up and I like the idea of playing Flynn and Sessions together. Minny are certainly moving in the right direction ... they won’t win much in 2010, but things are better. Thanks again. .

Obviously the Wollves are planning on putting alot of pressure on the ball this year with Flnn and Sessions in the backcourt! I love the move Sessions is a hard nosed guard who can score with and without the ball. I seen him in action last year and I was totally impressed with his game. With Gomes and Brewer at the tree spot they will have a dynamic squad especially when you add Love and Jefferson. They wont when that much this year but what a core to start a franchise with! Backcourt kinda reminds me of Vernon maxwell and kenny smith back in the day. yeah they were small but they got it done! .

I like the move. It shows that Kahn is willing to keep moving forward and try something else. Obviously distributing minutes will be a possible problem, but I like the Wolves move here. Yes it helps with the Rubio situation, but more importantly there young core is starting to become more realized and Rubio will have some value still. As long as clear roles are defined there should be no turmoil on the team. I think the wolves would be best to forget this summer and just move one. .

Doesn’t this devalue Flynn? I like how people focus on Rubio all the time xD .
