Does Steve Nash’s Foul On Ray Felton Deserve A Suspension?

November 11 07

Truthaboutit.net posts on Steve Nash fouling Ray Felton:

Ray Felton drove the lane, easily getting past with a spin move Nash as most do; Steve Nash was knocked off balance, but clearly stuck out his leg tripping Felton, who went down very hard, in the process. Ray was able to shoot the FTs, but got taken to the training room after that.

Now, I really respect Steve Nash’s ability. And I’m fairly confident that he deserved those MVP awards. But he’s not the innocent white cream pie that people perceive him to be. He’s a warrior, but that doesn’t mean he can’t be dirty too. He’s just a little more deceptive and smart about it than others. Think John Stockton.

Verdict: 1 game suspension....and yes, "hypocrite" maaay be a little harsh, then again, maybe not.

If anyone disagrees, I’d like to know why his foot was that high in the air and reaching back.....and if I’m totally off-base and wrong on this one, I will apologize.

My Quick Take: We live in the age of youtube, cell phone cameras/videos, and instant replay from so many angles fans get dizzy. Many of today’s athletes are scrutinized like Britney Spears taking a barefooted pee in a public bathroom.

By now, Nash’s foul on Felton has made the rounds. It’s troubling. But there are a few points worth considering:

1) Nash is no boy scout. He’s one of the NBA’s most competitive players. His passion comes from coaches and scouts doubting his ability. For example, his coach at Mount Douglas High School in Victoria told him he wasn’t good enough for Division 1 ball in the States. And check out his brother’s memories of their childhood:

“I remember looking out the window of our house, watching Steve shoot free    throws in the rain. I didn’t do that. Look, I have no regrets. I played in three world cup qualifiers (soccer). I had my chances. But with that little extra drive-that Steve drive-who knows? (Steve’s brother, Martin, from Jack McCallum’s :07 Seconds Or Less)

2) We’ve established Nash is feisty. But there’s a difference between feisty and dirty. Feisty is competing, dirty is intentionally attempting to injure. The two-time MVP wouldn’t deliberately injure anybody, especially Felton because …

3) ... they’re tight. The point guards are good friends. Felton made the trek to Vancouver for Nash’s charity game in July. I was sitting in press row right next to the bench. The two were laughing, joking, and carrying-on throughout the evening.

Bottom line, the suits at league head office should let Nash off with a friendly reminder to watch his legs, which is fair for a first-time offender. The all-world table-setter is a clean player, but nobody can escape the glare of youtube.

This type of thing happens all the time in basketball. Legs get tangled, arms and elbows fly freely and people get hurt. It’s the nature of the game. Did Nash mean to get in the way? Yeah, probably. Did he momentarily flash back to his old soccer days and try to trip his opponent up? Maybe. Did Nash mean to hurt him? I doubt it. Quit over-analyzing it and find something better to focus on. .

OMG! OMG!!! Nash is SO Intentionally Dirty! It is NOT instinct to THROW your leg up like that and then hop around on one foot! AND THEN, watch his head, Nash has just had this huge collision - knocking another man to the floor - and yet he doesn’t even notice - he’s not even curious about what just happened? No, Nash is TRYING very hard NOT to look so it is not even MORE obvious he did it on purpose! You can SEE him move into postion to do it as Felton blows by him, but the Really incriminating thing is How High he LIFTS HIS LEG to make sure he catches Felton’s leg, THEN Nash POGO’s ON ONE LEG so he can keep his other leg between Felton’s legs long enough TO MAKE SURE Felton goes down. NOBODY lifts their leg like that and NOBODY pogo’s on one leg like that when they could just put their other foot down for balance. But not Nash. That was a classic soccer TAKE-DOWN, pure and simple, which is dirty enough on a soft gra-------field, but is CRIMINALLY Reckless on a Hardwood floor. Where is that Maricopa Sheriff when you need him? He was an MVP, now Steve Nash is just a FILTHY PUNK!BTW, Felton was taken to the Hospital. Nash should have been taken to jail. .

he should definitely be suspended for that, it was surely intentional, i dont see why there wouldnt be a suspension involved . . .. . now just because it is steve nash he might not get a suspension, but in my opinion this should be taken very seriously .

i have watched steve playing basketball many times (from TV of course), i have noticed that he is such a energetic player in the field, that little action i that saw in the game, is not because he is playing dirty, that, i strongly believe, is just his basic muscle reflex, i see him have this kind of muscle reflex many time, remember, he used to play soccer all the time.. .

I think Nash say "sorry". So I guess that makes an excuse not to suspend him. I think its in the Referee manual. .

Of Course he should be suspended that is so unfair he deliberately tripped felton When kobe accidently hit jaric in the face he was suspended. Just cuz hes mr. 2 time MVP doesn mean he should get special treatment steve nash is an idiot. .

Accident or not, does it matter? Some of the comment on here are UNINTELLIGENTLY stated, unless he or she is constantly competing for something all their lives and label as an underdog; then that person would not know. Who or whomever say Nash is a hyprocrite or should or to jail, should take another look at his or her action before judging Nash’s action on the court. I think the Sun is lucky to have him. He put them on the NBA map; so give the little guy a break. .

i think that was intentional..hes a soccer player and trust they know how to trip it up...i have never been beaten, and jus turned and stuck my leg out..so he was either lazy or dirty..i dont really think thats suspension worthy, maybe ejection from that game thohe wooda definately got carded in futbol for that manuever tho .

Instinct, my bum. Any other player does that, and that’s a dirty play. But Nash does that and all you yahoos are making up the lamest of excuses to rally around the golden boy. Hypocrites! .

Everything happens too fast....Is that instinct reaction? or just mere accidental? We have the same animal reaction to danger. Maybe it was a defence reaction of his brain but came too fast or too slow..What i know is if got hurt i would certainly act either late or advance. Im not numb or stupid ! .

blaat what the hell are u talkin about the spurs outplayed the suns defence wins championships not offence. Why would he try to get revenge on a team taht had nothing to do with what went down in the conference finals. Nash didn’t trip him on purpose he wasn’t trying to get revenge. He didn’t want to easy points scored on him it’s as simple as that .

if you really play ball and youre guarding somebody.. thats instinct to not let him pass... steve did not do that on purpose.. that was just clear instinct... you never want anybody to pa-------by you.. you want to stop him... what the fucks with making a big deal about it.. he didnt mean to do that... and they are friends... so raymond felton understands that... .
