Dwyane Wade, the Miami Heat, and The Great Free Agent Chase of 2010

July 12 09

Breaking NBA news mixed with analysis …

Their News: "Wade said Heat president Pat Riley texted those sentiments very early Sunday, in what amounts to a largely ceremonial move. The Heat had to wait until 12:01 a.m. on July 12 before they could formally offer an extension to the reigning NBA scoring champion, and Wade said Riley didn’t wait too long before pressing the send button." Associated Press via ESPN.com

Our Very Quick Take: Last night was the first chance franchises had to offer player heading into the final year of their contracts an extension.

In one high-profile situation, both the team and player did the expected.

Not surprisingly, Heat executive Pat Riley reached out to Dwyane Wade about staying in Miami long-term via text message. And not surprisingly, the 2006 Finals MVP wasn’t making any decision after getting hit up on the T-Mobile (no word on whether Riles was in his Fave-Five).

(Yes, Chuck, the eighties were the good old days.)

Still, a few points are worth noting when considering ‘Wade and ‘The Great Free Agent Chase of 2010’:

First, the salary cap will decline by several million dollars for the 2010 season. There is no chance Chris Bosh, LeBron James, and Wade join forces in New York. None. With a declining cap, this proposition is too expensive-even for the big market Knicks.

Second, Bosh and Wade could easily become teammates. The two have the same agent in Henry Thomas, so it would be simple to market them as a package next summer. And with just $18 million on the books for 2010, Miami has the flexibility to tender two ‘maximum’ contracts.

Third, the Riley-Wade tiff over upgrading Flash’s supporting cast has been overblown. The oil-slick claims he won’t make changes before knowing Wade’s intentions post 2010, while the superstar will only make his intentions known after he sees management make changes. Both parties are playing their hand, trying for an edge.

Expect Riley and Wade to continue their poker game all year. Such is life when dealing with ‘The Great Free Agent Chase of 2010‘.

Chuck you must be living under the water to think that Chris Bosh is not going to move out of Toronto. First, Chris Bosh will not be underpaid because Miami Heat ACTUALLY ----(you reading this Chuck?) have money to provide Flash and CB4 max contract, which means Chris Bosh WILL NOT BE UNDERPAID. Secondly, although the new additions were good, they are not great. Hedo is not a superstar. DeRozan is a rookie, Calderon is just above average PG, and Bargnani still needs to improve. HOWEVER, Miami Heat have almost similar core except they have D-Wade. Playing with another superstar could lead CB4 closer to NBA Finals. It takes no brainer to figure that out and CB4 knows it too. Lastly, Miami are not inferior compared to Toronto. Tornoto couldn’t make it to playoffs last year, and addition of Hedo and DeRozan is not going to beat Boston, Orlando, and Cleveland. However, Miami Heat is already a playoff team. Addition of CB4 would definitely make them top-notch team. Plus, fans don’t like CB4 no more so there are no reasons for CB4 to stay in Toronto, who are far away from winning a championship .

Don’t be fooled he is going to stay in Miami. They can give him the most money and pat riley has a trade up his sleeve. .

I hope the Heat find a way to keep him. I can’t imagine Dwyane going to another team, and who would want to leave Miami unless forced out? I hope they can find a way to land Boozer, Bosh, or Amare. .

You must be living under a rock if you think the Raptors offseason moves hasn’t had a huge positive effect on Chris Bosh staying in Toronto. What exactly has Miami done to make their team better? I thought so --- NONE! It’s ludicrous to think Bosh would even think about leaving the Raptors for less money, and especially to an inferior team in the Heat. .

Wade will leave Miami if Flash cannot get any sidesick superstar. Miami has two option available. First is to sign Chris Bosh during ’2010 Chase’. However, this option could certainly backfire if Wade signs with other contenders despite the fact. Next option is to acquire STATS through a trade. Yet, this has another downside because it is hard to match the offers of Phoenix. The best option is to acquire Chris Bosh through ’2010 Chase’. Sure, there are chances that Wade could join forces with other team, but if Miami Heat acquires Bosh along with some missing pieces, there are no reasons for Flash to leave his beloved organization that gave him the first NBA ring out of all 2010 class. It would be a wise move for Pat Riley to check his hand and wait for helping cards to show up. .
