Fall of The Matrix: Shawn Marion to only get MLE from Toronto Raptors

June 24 09

I can’t believe how fast The Matrix has fallen.

Less than two years ago, Shawn Marion was an instrumental cog in the Phoenix Suns’ wheel. ‘Seven Seconds To Shoot’ recorded several fifty-plus win seasons in part because of the forward’s defensive prowess, ability to run, and out-rebound larger opponents.

There were perks for being Steve Nash’s star sidekick: Stuart Scott showed love on ESPN SportsCenter, NBA coaches voted him an All-Star, and management made him the highest paid player in franchise history by agreeing to a ‘max’ contract.

High profile. League-wide recognition. And money. Sounds good, right?

Well, not exactly. None of this satisfied Marion, who, after years of playing second fiddle to Nash and forward Amare Stoudemire, requested and then received a trade to the lottery-bound Miami Heat.

After finishing last year in Toronto, Marion has less profile and recognition. And with his contract set to expire in July, he’ll soon make less money, too. Michael Grange, a fine writer for The Globe and Mail, recently reported that the forward will have to take a 10 million dollar pay cut and should only get just above the Mid Level Exception on the open market.

“They also have had positive feedback from Marion about the possibility of him returning to play small forward.

With a tight job market the Raptors are hopeful an offer in the range of three years for $21-million might be enough to keep him in Toronto.

“The indication is he wants to be here,” Colangelo said. “And the message we’ve given him is we’d like him back, he fits this roster and we’ll try to make it happen.”

Part of this is the economy. Owners, like you and me, are feeling the recession. There is less revenue coming in, so the salary cap must fall. Also, owner’s sports teams are often leveraged on outside businesses that are in a down cycle, which means they’re less inclined to pay players, especially a fading star like Marion.

However, Marion is mostly at fault because he wanted out of Phoenix even though the Suns were tailor made for his skill set. After all, Marion covered Nash’s mediocre athleticism and defensive shortcomings, while the classic table-setter hid his swing’s poor handles and inability to create his own shot.

While in Miami and Toronto, he got exposed. Marion never established chemistry with Heat franchise face Dwyane Wade and was sent north at the trade deadline. Unfortunately, life with a depleted and struggling Raptor squad wasn’t much better.

‘The Matrix’ has crashed. So has his worth. Perhaps a pay cut will serve as motivation for the rest of his career.

I think shawn is one of the greatest players in the NBA at this time. Yes, he may have hurt himself complaining while playing for phoenix. He is not the only one who has ever complained about the team he was with. Why is KG not still with the timberwolves, AI not a 76er and Shaq not a Laker? (Yeah, I said it.) shawn is a dynamite person on and the court. That is so hard to find. He is Geniune. .

Shawn Marion must come to his senses and Sign with the Suns. Marion thriveds in the Suns system and with Nash. He won’t find success elsewhere. Suns should also come to their senses and sign Marion .

Wow. Tough crowd. You ask anyone who works in the NBA about BC and you will hear how sharp he is. You all forget he has history with Marion and that can go a long way.The only other team that would take Marion would be a championship contender and they would sign him for peanuts. You also forgot that Marion actually liked playing in Toronto. .

Dear Shawn Marion,GTFO of the dung hole NBA franchise called the Toronto Raptors as fast as you can. That team is going nowhere, with their failing euro-centric make up. Bosh is gonna get the hell out of dodge soon too...either via a sign and trade, or if Bryan Colangelo continues his ’dumbassery’, Bosh will be able to sign with another team at the end of next season with the Raptors getting jack in return.Run Shawn, Run. You’ll regret not doing so.... .

He hasn’t even been talked about much in this free agency year. NOT A GOOD SIGN. I don’t think he will sign for MLE, especially with Toronto... He probably can make more going overseas. .

That’s what he gets for listening to his agent F****r, I mean Fegan. He should fire him immediately and get someone that is still respected and has a good relationship with the GMs. Fegan is a career killer. His recent track record speaks for itself. Yi Jianlian, Varejao and soon to be Ricky Rubio. Run Matrix, RUN!! .

Agree 100%. I’ve been saying this for years when he was in Pheonix. You can bet that Amare is in that category too once he gets traded away from the "table setter". This goes along with a long list of players who’s athleticism and ability to catch-and-dunk has risen them to a stardom level they don’t belong to. This includes Kenyon Martin, Richard Jefferson, Amare Stoudemire, maybe even Karl Malone, and anyone else who has played with Jason Kidd and Steve Nash and John Stockton. Those three PG’s have made a lot of people super rich. .
