Former Knick coach Isiah Thomas denies October overdose was a suicide attempt

April 26 09

They got Isiah Thomas’ name wrong. And the press conference to announce his hiring as Florida International University’s new men’s basketball coach went from bad to worse.

After being introduced as Isiah Thompson, the Hall of Fame guard faced a tough interview on ESPN SportsCenter. Thomas provided a reasonable but canned answer when asked how he will convince parents to send their sons to FIU after his sexual harassment suit.

Then the news anchor made like TMZ, bringing up October’s overdose. The Hall of Fame guard was asked to clarify last fall’s messy trip to the hospital for overindulging in sleeping pills and to confirm it was not a suicide attempt.

Thomas squashed the suicide question and then looked off camera. Chances are, he was searching for the school’s public relations officer to throw him a life jacket. Mercifully, analyst Andy Katz stepped in for the basketball portion of the interview.

It’s not surprising Thomas landed a college coaching gig. With his track record on and off court, NCAA basketball suddenly got a lot more ‘interesting’.

Was the interviewer out of line with her questions? Or, should Thomas have addressed past issues like the overdose before the FIU press conference. Watch the clip and get at us in the comment box below.

She was out of line. ESPN is out of line. You know that sexual harassment suit was garbage. Isiah gets footnotes after every article. Does the same thing happen to Bird, Magic, McHale or Jordan? I’m looking at the intent of the writer or the slant imposed by the editor. It is not surprising that newspapers are dying on the vine, and with this kind of reporting, it won’t be long before we’re talking about ESPN in the past tense. Glowing about the glory days and raging about the decline. .
