Goat or hero? What is Houston’s Tracy McGrady?

January 05 09

Nobody polarizes like Tracy McGrady.

Since turning pro, he has always had his supporters and detractors. No middle ground. No in-between. And both sides have ample evidence to bolster their position.

The supporters mention T-Mac’s individual accolades, freakish athleticism, the good times in Toronto and Orlando, and last year’s improbable winning streak. While the detractors counter with T-Mac’s injury woes, record of apathetic play, the sour endings in Toronto and Orlando, and, of course, the first round playoff losses.

Intentional or not, the man divides.

Recent reports McGrady quit on Houston are surprising –even for a player who has always been controversial.

"Mark it down. It was Jan. 2, 2009, 1:16 left in the third quarter, when there was a seismic shift in the Rockets’ world, when the tectonic plates opened up and swallowed an era. The official play-by-play sheet simply says: Jamario Moon slam dunk. Anybody who was watching at the Air Canada Centre or on TV knows it was the precise moment that Tracy McGrady quit on the Rockets." (Houston Chronicle)

Some thoughts on McGrady and this situation:

McGrady isn’t a goat or hero. He is blessed with natural talent, but cursed with a brittle body. Health permitting, the lanky swing is a very good, and occasionally great, player.

His formative years were with two dysfunctional organizations. The Raptors’ early days weren’t pretty, while Orlando, before Otis Smith became GM, should have been in Disney World, not the NBA. If either situation provided stability, a mentor, or modelled professionalism, McGrady’s career might be different.

Right now, the Rockets must stick by their player. He is hurt. And their is no other option. Injuries have killed McGrady’s market value, so a trade won’t happen. The Rockets best bet is to reduce the former All-Star’s minutes and, when he’s healthy and performing well, they can re-examine their options.

McGrady is at a crossroad. Things improve or changes are coming to Houston. His supporters and detractors might even agree on that.

He’s the greatest regular season two-guard never to advance in the playoffs. When it’s all said and done, he might become the best player to never win a playoff series. Then again, the Rockets have an incredible chance to win this year. .

tmac wont be branded overrated if he had a better line up in orlando or has been healthy in houston. maybe he needs some rest. i heard that he was supposed to have a 3 week break this season to heal up then he plays through it which may have cost him more. he has some nice accomplishments this season (a triple double) but he has to be healthy. plus he started playing after high schol. kg and kobe have been durable, but still takes a toll on your body, considering the nba’s tough sked. he doesnt deserve his spot in the all star this year (in which he acknowledges) until he does a turn around this month. he is my fave player, though unlucky, and my only wish for him is to recover, kill the critics and win a ring. .

I don’t think McGrady will go to the hall of fame. He stays hurt to much to be only 29 yrs old. His numbers are not quite their. .

Tmac is very very very unlucky, he, and houston, could have been great if they had stayed fit...there is still time though, just T-mac might not hit the same heights of his peak?i hope he doesnt get into the allstar game, because he doesnt deserve it, and because he needs a rest!! .

Go tmac.. this guy is one of the most talented players of all time. he got his game..he has to rest, he has to sit for a while and receive professional treatment and physiotherapy and return to his prime.. If he can find his game befoer the playoffs, then i can garantee you, the rockets will face Lakers in conference finals. If they can beat the lakers, they will win in 6 against Boston.Peace .

Tmac sucks, can’t shoot, drive and is weak . He shouldn’t be an All Star anymore and will never get an NBA title unless he somehow gets traded to L.A. or Boston. Even if he does win a title he won’t be the person who carries the team or be a major factor in it. .

Yes of course he got some legendary moments, even Ilgauskas got some, that does not mean he deserves so much props !! of course he was great in Orlando but we need to focus in the future guys !! do you think he will leave his mark in the league? I dont think so... .

Tracy McGrady is one of the most talented offensive players in NBA history. His freakish athletism and streaky scoring has led him to multiple scoring titles and legendary games (13pts in 30 secs). But as everyone points out, his health has always been a major concern. McGrady is still young, believe it or not the KID is only 29 years old and still has some talent in the tank. Now with Yao and Artest, Tracy has a great chance to make a run in the playoffs and maybe secure his first NBA title. Even if McGrady doesnt win a title or even play another game in the league, hes definetely left his mark in NBA history and deserves his props. I think he will eventually win a championship and ultimately get inducted into the Hall of Fame. .

Tmac is talented, no doubt about that, but his still injured status and his lack of leadership turned him into a real overrated player contrary to kobe or james who can carry their teams further than the playoffs’ 1st round. Hes neither a goat or hero, hes no longer the elite player he was before. And I truly hope that no one will vote for him for the ASG, he does not deserve it !! .
