Golden State Reunion Over, Does Chris Webber Belong In Hall of Fame?

March 26 08

The AM Take: The C-Webb-Nellie reunion is over. Today, two months after burying his past with Coach Don Nelson and returning to the Warriors, Chris Webber will retire from the NBA because of knee troubles.

So the circle is complete. Webber, following his infamous timeout in the NCAA Final with Michigan, began his professional career in Golden State. He’ll apparently finish there, too.

Of course, now is the perfect time to debate the All-Star’s legacy and decide if he belongs in the Hall of Fame. As always, read the post, form an opinion, and get at us in the comment box with your thoughts.

Yes, Webber Belongs in the Hall of Fame ...

  • He has the numbers. Webber is one of six players to average 20 points, 9 rebounds, and 4 assists over his career. The others are Elgin Baylor, Larry Bird, Wilt Chamberlain, Billy Cunninghan, and Kevin Garnett.
  • Webber could be the best passing four-man ever. In Sacramento, he’d operate the high-post and, like a giant Steve Nash, hit guards Mike Bibby or Bobby Jackson on a backdoor cut.
  • His star power impacted every team he played on. With Webber, Washington actually qualified for the playoffs, while the forward turned the lowly Sacramento Kings into Left Coast contenders.

No, Webber Doesn’t Belong in the Hall of Fame ...

  • Sure, his numbers are excellent. But Webber never fully developed his physical gifts to reach his potential. He was often out-of-shape or engaged in off-court drama.

  • Webber was supposed to be The Franchise in Sacramento. But during the playoffs, he often underachieved and others had to pick up the slack.
  • Webber’s celebrity caused problems. He was suspended more than once for smoking marijuana and, early in his career, got caught up living the NBA life.

Our call: Webber doesn’t belong in the Hall of Fame.

Why: Kings`owner Joe Maloof perfectly described Webber`s career:``We had a lot of fun together. He was the face of our franchise for many years and we almost got it done. Almost.``

Great players shouldn`t be remembered by the ``almost`` tag. So Webber doesn`t quite make the Hall of Fame.

He was the franchise in Sac town until his injury. That team was terrible when he was traded there and became terrible when he was traded away. They failed to win even one playoff series after he left with many of the same players remaining on the squad. The Kings were swept by Seattle the year Webb was traded away in the playoffs. Swept! They couldn’t win one game???? And who picked up the slack for Webb in the playoffs??? WTF are you talking about? In the LA series he stayed in foul troubled. We now know why cheating refs and still Webb averaged the most points and boards. His assists were very high as well. Please keep sports in perspective. The Lakers were more experienced and better coached. The Lakers were rolling through the league in that time. I think the year previous they swept the Spurs beating them by like 20 points in some of the games in the playoffs.Be responsible in spitting your sports history. Teams grow into champions and often lose to the same team multiple years before they get there. Of course there are a couple of exceptions to this rule. So again please stop with the small minded ridiculous thinking. Winning a title doesn’t make you a great player in a team sport. Turning lemons into lemonade does and Webb did that.Great players make their teammates better. That doesn’t show up on the stat sheet. .

Yes he belongs in. When was Webber out of shape? I don’t care about players personal lives. You writers kill me with that stuff. I’d love to look into your lives sometime and find out how much weed you’ve smoked. He carried the Kings. How many times did LA win off of Robert Horry shots??? The Kings didn’t have an Horry. No other person carried the Kings. Are you taking about one game winning shot Bibby made? Yes he played well but at times he didn’t Webb was a very consistent player. And the person who brought up Philly. They need to read some books. He easily made those baskets in the past. He’s knees was done he had no lift. Before his injury he was a 50% shooter with a jumper. Stop being an asshole with these ridiculous non fact based opinions! He’s not a choke artist either. He scored the last basket for MI before the TO and had the most points. He balled all through the tournament. Each game is win or go home. The small minded people here placing ridiculous labels are only following the media hated for the Fab Fives lead. They were 5 freshman then 5 sophmores DAMN! Many teams who win the national title in college are full of juniors and seniors who failed to even get to the title game during their freshman and sophmore years. So stop it. A person is not a choke artist b/c of one play in his career. He is the best passing big men ever. Top 10 player in his prime. That’s just ridiculous and a poor way of viewing sports and life. .

hey oly lets just put him on the celtics or lakers, they win this yr does that make him a hall of famer? basketball is a team game and when he played for sac he was all team ball, he killed it in playoffs if i remember and his teamates would step it up. bibby, divac, christie, peja. where were they with out cwebb? they were bottom feeders. he deserves it. and he will make it. .
