Great Playoff Moments, Day 4: Michael Jordan & Chicago Learn About New York’s "Heart Like John Starks"

April 22 08

The legendary Beastie Boys bragged, “I’ve got heart like John Starks” on their mid-nineties hit Get It Together. Why would the Beasties make such a claim? Well, flashback to May of 1993, Bulls-Knicks playoff series.

Not so long ago, before Isiah Thomas’ sexual harassment suit, before Stephon Marbury was anointed the franchise, before James Dolan was giving Jerome James $30 million dollars, and before Allan Houston’s silky smooth stroke, John Starks was an MSG favourite.

The fiery two-guard took the scenic route to the NBA. He attended several community colleges, then paid dues in the World Basketball League, the Continental Basketball Association, and Europe. Of course, Starks wasn’t above bagging groceries in between gigs, either.

Eventually, he landed a starring role with Pat Riley’s Knicks. Under the oil slick, Starks became an All-Star, but also had the not-so inevitable task of defending Michael Jordan during the Bulls’ championships of the early nineties.

However, Starks had moments, specifically this left-handed jam ...

... He first loses B.J. Armstrong on a Patrick Ewing body check, takes two firm dribbles baseline, switches to his left-hand, and then packs it on the help defence of Horace Grant and Michael Jordan.

Starks never won New York an NBA Title. In fact, just one year later, he was the goat when the Knicks lost to the Rockets in the NBA Finals. But because of this jam, and his effort, NYC and the Beastie Boys showed love.

Sean Sparks like John Starks in the fourth quarter - Heltah Skeltah

That’s the only other one I’ve got. These are all going into my big list o’ basketball raps for a mega-feature in the summer.

You’d be surprised how many folks in N.Y. have no love for the Knicks.

F*ck all the glamour and glitz/I plan to get rich/I’m from New York and never was a fan of the Knicks. - Big L

I lived on L’s old block (139th and Lenox) for a while, and I can tell you that he wasn’t the only one around there who didn’t care for the team. Half of the city is waiting for the Nets to jump the Hudson to have a team to support.

Cold line by Phife considering he’s a New Yorker! Anyway, here is another J-Starks line ..."Leg in jersey arm in Brooklyn head buried in central parkYou can’t even borrow from New York no more like John StarksAnd I ain’t talkin to him I’m talkin to Malik Cox" (Memph Bleek) Not the same as Beasties or "the man on the award tour" ... Cheers .

"F*ck around, I’ll have your heart/Like Jordan had Starks." - Phife Dawg

I figured I should drop that in while we’re quoting Starks-related lyrics.

I long for those Knicks.Guys like Oakley,Ewing,Starks,Harper,Jackson and the list goes on and on.But when the Knicks traded the Heart of the Franchise namely Ewing the downfall was set in progress.I hope that Donnie Walsh can get this team ontrack to become a juggernaut again. .
