Hasheem Thabeet on Allen Iverson and Zach Randolph in Memphis: “Everybody will get theirs”

Breaking NBA news mixed with our quick analysis …

Today, I watched Hasheem Thabeet do it all at Steve Nash’s ‘Showdown in Downtown’ Vancouver.

The second pick in the 2009 NBA draft notched a brilliant goal against the Vancouver Whitecaps FC development squad during an eight-aside soccer match, represented the Memphis Grizzlies with class, and easily manoeuvred through reporter’s questions on new teammates Allen Iverson and Zach Randolph.

“For us we want to run. And for us to bring Allen Iverson on the team, he wants to push the ball all the time, so for us it’s a great addition. And everybody (Rudy Gay, O.J. Mayo, and Zach Randolph) is going to get theirs.”

“I also speak to Zach (Randolph) a lot. When I was in Los Angeles before the draft, I used to go in the gym and work out with him, so he going to help us a lot.”

I’m still unsure of the mix in Memphis. Older heads like Iverson and Randolph will want the majority of shots to re-establish their names, while younger stars like Gay and Mayo also need the ball to make an impact.

Something has to give. New coach Lionel Hollins will have the most unpleasant task of mediating disputes because everybody isn’t ‘getting theirs’ as Thabeet says. Still, on paper, the Grizzlies have improved and, after years of being an afterthought, there’s finally a buzz in Memphis for the coming season.

we made an offer to Josh Smith last summer and ATL matched it in his RFA summer for a huge sum. now David Lee we did not get to make an offer presumably because he asked for far too much $$$ ? The Randolph trade I think had been a done deal long before the 2009 draft though - more or less. Amare Stoudamire, Boozer and David Lee were probably never discussed seriously. Phoenix wanted Mike Conley and Rudy g--for Amare and then some. But Josh Smith was definitely our number 1 choice after missing out on Al Horford. .

I don’t know what to think of Memphis. The good part for this team, is that they have a lot more experience and an excitement about their team that will give them more fans and support. They have a pretty good balance of old and young, so if they can figure out who are role players, and who are the leaders... this team has the talent to get into the playoffs. Good luck Grizz. .

Thabeet is raw and will likely struggle, but Memphis, with their choice to go young, should play him. Instead of trading for Randloph, they should have secured a better post mentor for Thabeet and Gasol like Joe Smith. He’s a former number one pick and well-respected throughout the league and would have made a first-rate mentor! .

Thabeet is definately a good guy. His struggles in the summer league were kind of predictable, he struggled with his offense in college and its carrying over, but like Oly said most bigs tend to struggle early in their career. The comparison to Chandler is a perfect one, they play a similar game. Thabeet could become a new Dikembe Motumbo if he can build on the potential he has. Yes thats a bit of a lofty expectation but if he plays like many think he’s capable of its a possiblity. I’m highly critical of Memphis’s decision to bring in Randolph and Iverson with that young core but thats besides the point. If they run n gun everyone may get theirs, Hard to say now though. The whole Memphis situation is something that just needs to play itself out. .

Thanks for commenting and reading. Yes, on first impressions, Thabeet seems like a good guy.

As for his future: first, physically, he’s there. Thabeet is long, lean, and muscular. He’s also 7-3. Second, reports indicate he has a good work ethic and is mature for his age being from Tanzania has helped foster a different perspective.

But he is raw. This was the knock against him in the draft and was clear in summer league. However, many young bigs struggle early on. I look for him to perhaps have a Tyson Chadler like future. He’ll hopefully be a defensive force, who chips in low double figure points off dunks, tips and put-backs.

Get at me with thoughts on Thabeet, folks. What will he do in 2010? .

Oly: got thoughts on Thabeet? He seemed to struggle mightily in summer league. What are your thoughts. Learn anything today other than the fact he seems like an okay dude? .

Memphis will struggle. Sometimes, having a mix of young and old works, but this is not one of those cases. The young and old will clash and won’t be able to form a nucleus. No good at all. .
