Houston Rockets Should Play Steve Francis Or Let Him Move On

November 19 07

He’s no longer The Franchise, but last night Steve Francis showed he has plenty to offer the Houston Rockets or another NBA team.

Heading into yesterday’s contest, the Rockets had played 10 games, and Francis hadn’t seen the court. Houston coach Rick Adelman had no room in his playing rotation, so the former All-Star stacked-up ‘did not play-coaches decisions’ like a rookie on a minimum contract.

With Tracy McGrady on the sideline nursing a sore elbow, Francis got a 23 minute run in the Rockets 115-105 loss against the Suns on Saturday evening.

Pro athletes never like moral victories, but Francis’ play was a positive for a suddenly slumping Houston squad.

His numbers were so-so: 8 points on 3-of-11 shooting, 2 assists, 1 rebound, and 1 steal. However, there was plenty to like:

  • Francis exuded positive body language. Throughout his career, he’s earned a rep for on-court pouting and showboating. Last night, there was none of that. Francis maintained his composure and seemed to enjoy himself.
  • In the past, Francis got caught over dribbling on the perimeter. On Saturday, he distributed the ball and mostly played within the offense.
  • Francis ran a nice two-man game with post Luis Scola. He used the Argentine’s screen to get open and then drained a deep jumper.
  • His trademark explosiveness is still there, too. In the second quarter, Francis took his man off the dribble, drove to the basket, and drew a blocking foul on Boris Diaw.

Following the game, Francis acknowledged the support he has received from Houston fans.

"It’s been great," Francis said of the crowd’s reaction. "They’ve been sticking behind me no matter what. Hopefully, this is a start for me to continue to get playing time, trying to help this team win."  (Associated Press)

So will Francis get regular minutes? A story in the Philadelphia Inquirer suggests this may become an issue:

We hear Tracy McGrady has been lobbying to get Francis more burn, with no luck. Can’t understand why the Rockets brought him back if they’re not going to throw him a bone, because it’s just a matter of time before he explodes.

So far, Francis has been professional and accepted his role. But the story in the Inquirer is right-the former All-Star will surely get frustrated being chained to the bench. This is understandable.

Houston should make a decision on Francis before the situation escalates. Give him more playing time or let him move on. Anything else is unfair.

Rick Aldelman is an idiot. Francis is in the prim of his career. If you dont use him now he will be in his mid 30s wahsed up. What was the point of aquiring him. HE WAS AN ALL-STAR!!! .

Last year when Francis was healthy the Knicks won games. The only blow out game the Knicks enjoyed last year was in Boston and Francis led all scorers, while Marbury sat on the bench with a towel on his head. .

I don’t know why the rockects added Steve Francis. He only had a few minutes of play. He is still very good, so he need to have to time in order to be the "franchise". With Steve in good shape, he can penetrate and have more opening for T-mac and Yao. Alston can’t dunk, and his tear drop sucks, so please Coach let Steve Play more!!!! .

Francis is the man for the game. He has more to offer than Alston/James and will prove it, when his time comes. Alston should be only getting rebounds, steels, and assists. He should not even look at the rim with his sorry shooting game. His tear-drop is flat out SAD ! James should be Francis back-up although his tear-drop looks like Alston’s. .

I can’t believe the restraint Steve has displayed while being benched so long. I, as a viewer, have been extremely frustrated! I only admire Steve more than ever for his restraint. There was no reason to leave him hanging for so long. .

Based on Saturday’s performance Francis should get more playing time. I think if he gets back into prime shape it should be him starting and James backing him up. Alston is really disappointing me this season. .

Mavericks fan here. First of all, I wanna say i was shocked that he has not been playing because of Coaches decision. i thought the reason i haven’t seen him on court is because he’s hurt or something. When he signed with Rox this off-season i thought he’d be one guy to put them over some, and i really thought he’d give us some trouble, but damn, i didn’t know it was this bad. He’s still got hops, and i thought he played his best ball in Houston a while back, not sure what happened to him! .

Francis deserves some minutes, but he can’t compromise the team ... eventually he has to grow up and get it together .

I’m so sick of all this media rallying behind Francis. Your analysis is right on last night, but why such sympathy ... what has he done lately ...other guys on Rockets have beaten him out! .
