How Jarrett Jack helps Toronto Raptors

July 12 09

Breaking NBA news mixed with analysis …

Their News: "According to multiple sources, the Raptors have extended an offer sheet to Indiana Pacers’ restricted free agent guard Jarrett Jack. The offer is reportedly going to be made formally Sunday or Monday, at which point the Pacers have seven days to match." (TSN.ca)

Our Very Quick Analysis: GM Bryan Colangelo continues the makeover.

Today, Toronto reportedly inked restricted free agent Jarrett Jack to a four-year, $20 million pact. Before the talented combo guard can officially become a Raptor, his old team, the Indiana Pacers, have a week to match the offer.

They probably won’t.

In today’s NBA of haves and have-nots, the Pacers lack the resources to spend $5 million on a reserve. Even a top reserve like Jack. So Indiana’s loss will likely be Toronto’s gain.

The Raptors now have a formidable one-two punch at point guard. Calderon is a pass-first table-setter, while Jack has the size and ability to get to the hoop. Also, Calderon needs a strong back-up like Jack to keep his minutes down and preserve his health for an entire season.

He improves Toronto’s depth, athleticism, and toughness. Jack has the skill-set to play off-guard and physical tools to defend the perimeter. Most importantly, the Georgia Tech alum is an intense competitor and won’t tolerate losing.

Jack is the latest example of Colangelo overhauling the roster. Over the summer, he extended Andrea Bargnani, drafted DeMar DeRozan, signed free agent Hedo Turkoglu, and traded for Devean George and Antonie Wright. With or without Bosh (beyond 2010), the Raptors should be fine.

The changes won’t stop with Jack. Expect Colangelo to make additional moves as part of the makeover.

Toronto made a big step in the right direction, but they are not a 50 win team. They are 5-7 in the East depending on how they mesh with each other. While Hedo, Jack, and DeRozan are all good pickups... they are losing 2 starters in Marion and Parker. Chemistry should be the first thing that gets upgraded. .

Bosh was integral in getting Hedo to Toronto. He phoned Hedo and had a long conversation about Toronto. So Gm for Hire...unless your Bosh’s lover or his agent, then don’t be too quick on him heading out of town. I’m not saying that he’s not, but I think if Toronto puts a great team out there, and because Toronto can give him the most money in economically sallow times, that he very well may resign in T.O. after all. .

Hi GM For Hire. You are right BC and the Raps deserve credit. DeRozan will be a stud, but don’t overlook Antonie Wright. That was a great pick-up, unlike last year Triano will have plenty to work with! Thanks for commenting. .

Another power move by GM Bryan Colangelo! You have to give the raptors credit. Even though they Bosh is gonna be out of there regarless of what they do at least they are gonna put a team out thee thats gonna compete! I think rozan is gonna be a stud when he gets the hang of things! I can’t wait til the season starts.. .
