How Orlando lost game four, and likely the NBA Title, to Los Angeles

June 12 09

NBA news mixed with analysis ...

Their News: "The Los Angeles Lakers have taken a 3-1 lead the NBA finals, rallying to beat the Orlando Magic 99-91 in overtime to move within one win of a 15th championship. Derek Fisher hit the tying three-pointer with 4.6 seconds left in regulation Thursday night, then made the go-ahead three with 31 seconds left as the Lakers won their second overtime game of the series." (TSN.ca)

Our Very Quick Analysis: I’d say game four was a lost opportunity.

After all, Orlando successfully turned Los Angeles superstar Kobe Bryant into a volume shooter. And with seconds remaining, the Magic held a three-point advantage and seemed poised to even the NBA Finals at 2-2.

Then the Eastern Conference champions came down with a case of the ‘stupids’ and forgot to execute.

First, they defended the Lakers’ final possession poorly. With eleven seconds left and up three, the Magic had a choice: foul and make the purple-and-gold reset with less time on the clock or protect the three-point line and force a two-point basket.

Unfortunately, Stan Van Gundy’s crew did neither. They didn’t foul. And they certainly didn’t protect the three-point line. So after denying Bryant the ball, veteran Derek Fisher accepted the space given to him by Jameer Nelson and calmly sank a game-tying three-pointer.

Second, they still had a chance to win in regulation, but missed a mismatch down low. On the game’s final possession, the Magic had Bryant defending Dwight Howard on a switch. Again, they refused to go inside and had to settle for a Mickael Pietrus missed jumper.

But there were other breakdowns. For instance, Orlando made just 22-of-37 free throw attempts, while co-star Rashard Lewis has to be better than his 2-for-10 shooting. Finally, coach Van Gundy can’t continue playing musical chairs at point guard and must pick between Rafer Alston and Nelson.

Instead of evening the series and making the Finals a best-of-three affair, the Magic must now win three straight. Like I said game four, and their chance at an NBA Title, is likely lost.

Hi Oly,I watched all of game 4 and I actually didn’t think much of Dwight Howards performance and thought he was getting away with being physical with Bynum and Gasol where he was allowed to man handle them, but if they touched him they got a foul. There was even a play where Van Gundy (commentator) commented Bynum didn’t even touch Howard and he got whistled. Lakers are the better team, but the officiating since game 1 has been geared toward evening the teams up. .

Finally somebody took Howard;s stupid smile away. L.A destroyed him mentally in my opinion, Lewis is so overpaid that I don’t know what to say, the great Courtney Lee who will stand in a wellfare queue after season and Nelson who plays despite strong Alston...I ask myself how could they manage to get into finals? Last night I asked myself why didn’t they foul?!?!?! Year ago I said Lakers in 2009 and I’m still counting on them, yet I wanted the series to be tight and see good game when I get up at 3a.m to watch it...bye bye 7 game series...Orlando Magic R.I.P 2009 .

I still can’t believe last night’s game. Jameer Nelson just lets the lakers most clutch shooter not named kobe, dribble right up to the line and jack up a three. I’ve never seen such a dumb defensive posession in a bigger spot before. .

there were alot of missed opportunities for the Magic. It was very clear that they could even the series especially in the 4th quarter. SVG made frustrating panic moves. why should you let Jameer play without his all-star form. i rather let courtney lee or rafer stayed the game just to guard fisher. the lakers big men were in foul trouble. why didn’t the magic take good advantage of it? dwight should have done it. rashard was the focus of the lakers during that game.turkoglu missed crucial free throws in the 4th.should you shoot 10,000 freethrows this weekend? .

way to go dwight howard! im glad you get paid boatloads of cash to miss free throw shots when they count!or is it your coach stan van gundy (aka stan van jeremy) the panic attack master.we saw your team speech in the locker room. the players were looking at you like a 2 headed idiot. every other coach in all sports finals history commands respect from his players naturally. way to let your team and fans down buddy. pack your bags this is your last year in orlando.dwight howard dates ugly loser chics here in orlando, and Turk cheats on his wife and gives crappy tips to bartenders when he goes out. .

Good points Oly, especially about Rashard. It’s quite surprising they can be so close with him doing his best Cavs impression (choking). What I don’t like is that Dwight Howard only got 12 touches, and Bynum was still in foul trouble. He may be predictable like Kareem said, but has anybody stopped him because of that? The Magic missed a huge opportunity this game with Kobe shooting terrible (11-31) and they’re going to pay for it. .
