It’s Pretty Simple: Kobe Bryant is An MVP Candidate

April 04 07

Kobe Bryant has never been simple or straightforward. His career has been filled with controversy, making him difficult to evaluate as a player and person.

Part of this is Bryant’s doing. His actions and attitude have often left something to be desired.

Part of this is our doing. Many of us, starting with his days at Lower Merion High School in Philadelphia, wanted to see him fail.

How could we not hate on him? After all, who was this teenager taking Brandy to the prom on network television? And who was this teenager declaring himself eligible for the draft in black sunglasses? And what right did he have to force a trade to the Lakers?

Bryant made a bad first impression. Things went from bad to worse with the Shaq feud. His image then hit rock bottom when he was charged with sexual assault.

Enough time has gone by. He should receive a full pardon from the court of public opinion. But some will never forget his past, forever complicating Bryant’s legacy.

This year, for once, Bryant’s play has been simple to evaluate. He’s been outstanding. Here’s why he should be included in any MVP discussion:

1) Bryant’s the only MVP candidate capable of dominating on defense. He’s an excellent individual and team defender. Nash is a poor defender, while Nowitzki holds his own.

2) Bryant’s role changed during the season. For the first thirty games, he was Kobe the Facilitator, dropping dimes and hitting the open man.

His role changed when Luke Walton and Lamar Odom went on injured reserve. Kobe the Facilitator had to become Kobe the Scoring Assassin. And the 2-guard certainly scored, running off several 50 point games and forcing the league’s shutdown defenders to seek new forms of employment.

Most importantly, Kobe the Scoring Assassin saved Los Angeles’ season. Bryant’s been a chameleon, changing his role to help the Lakers win.

3) Bryant’s finally acting like an MVP. He gets his teammates involved. He encourages instead of alienating. He’s a leader.

Nash or Nowitzki will win MVP. But Kobe Bean deserves consideration. His past shouldn’t matter. But like everything with Bryant, it’s never simple or straight forward.

Steve nash and Dirk have team mates that are good and thaz y they are very teams. lakers only have couple of experienced players. and that too are not equal to what suns and mavs can do. If team winning was the case then Y DIDNT KOBE GET MVP OR SHAQ GET MVP IN REGULAR SEASON WHEN THEY WERE WINNING IN 2000?ITS ALL RACISTS FUCKERS WHO HANDLES ALL THIS SHIT. FUCKERS HATE KOBE SO MUCHT THAT THEY DONT EVEN CARE BOUT FUCKEN TALENT. THEY LOOK @ PERSONAL LIFE AND PAST WHEN IT COMES TO MVPI HATE ALL THE ANALYSTS THAT HATE KOBE. PERIOD. If I have Shawn Marion (all Star), Amare (All Star), Barbosa (6th MAn) and Joe Johnson on my team, I will defenitely be an MVP, and probably win Championship. But that is not the case. My team was injured pretty much the whole season. I have the supporting cast of, Kwame Brown (out for more than 20 games, still hurt too), Walton (out for 21 days), LO (Out for about 17 games and playing with a torn Lambrum), Smush who is the lowest paid starting PG in the NBA. But listen, We still manage to make the playoffs, I have the Scoring title pretty muched locked, My assist is higher than last year, My minutes are down from last year, and my FG is significantly down from last year. Name a person who wouldn’t want to play with me. Even Shaq, deep down inside he is regretting the one championship that he got from Miami. He knows that if he woulda stayed with the Lakers that he will have 6 Rings by now. .

kobe has very steep competition with dirk and steve nash. If the mvp award was based on scoring only he would win hands down. But the team doesn’t improve that much with him. He is improving on his assist. This team will give whoever they play in the first round a good run. .

Obviously, the only reason Kobe is in the MVP talk is his scoring output. This will be his second straight scoring title but his scoring has dropped about 4pts since last year. 4 games of 50 or more, 2 games of 60 or more, how can you argue that he shouldn’t be in the MVP talk. Despite the fact Kobe is my favorite player out of the 3 top MVP candidates (nash and Nowitzki), i have to give the MVP away to Nash due to his assists and points are up which are career highs. If Kobe can have a huge scoring output in the first round of the playoffs and somehow get the upset in the first round against right now will either be the Spurs or the Suns (reason being nuggets are now only 1 game out of 6th place in the west), especially if he beats the defending mvp, in my mind he should be the MVP and I hope he gets it. .

Kobe should get MVP definetly. He has saved the Lakers from hitting rock bottom and he is a true leader, he gets players involved and takes charge when the team is in for the worst or just been having a bad performance. .
