Jason Kidd Trade Conveniently Overshadows Dirk Nowitzki-Avery Johnson Strain?

February 19 08

The New York Post is reporting the following:

The Mavericks’ move on Jason Kidd has as much to do with Avery Johnson’s dissatisfaction with Dirk Nowitzki as a leader as with Devin Harris’ point-guard shortcomings. According to an infallible source, the Mavericks’ coach pressed team owner Mark Cuban to deal Dirk after the NBA’s MVP came up shamefully small against the Warriors in last season’s upsetting first-round elimination, but was overruled.

My AM Take: I remember a story about Larry Brown. In Detroit, after a bad practice or tough loss, the nomad sideline boss would demand GM Joe Dumars trade the entire roster.

Dumars, the Pistons’ architect, would let Brown vent. Then he’d calmly inform him why a deal wasn’t happening. Coaches get emotional. Owners and front office executives must act as the voice of reason.

However, if this report is true, Dallas has an issue. Coach-superstar relationships are forged on trust and accountability. Think Gregg Popovich-Tim Duncan, Mike D’Antoni-Steve Nash, and Sam Mitchell-Chris Bosh. Johnson could’ve ruined whatever bond he had with the former MVP by pressing for a trade.

Not surprisingly, Johnson’s request was vetoed by ownership. Mark Cuban is tight with Nowitzki. And the tycoon knows superstars are irreplaceable, while good coaches aren’t so scarce.

By overruling his coach, Cuban showed he values Nowitzki more than Johnson. Remember, the renegade owner and The Little General had a dispute over Johnson’s contract two summers ago. Could their relationship be strained?

Bottom line, Jason Kidd is arriving at the right time. He’ll take the ball and, for now, the spotlight.

For the life of me, I never understood how or why Dirk got an MVP ... while Kobe constantly gets ignored. Explain it to me, like I was a 5 year old! .

Dirk has always sucked in all-star games. He just doesn’t feel comfortable there for some reason. But to use that as an example of how he isn’t good is ridiculous. Duncan wasn’t exactly blowing anyone away in the All-star game either. BUT, Dirk and Duncan did get them Back in that game and Byron Scott had them both in the game at the end. Also, Dirk was ALWAYS a great playoff performer before Avery showed up. Dirk and Avery just don’t fit together as coach and player. Avery has no idea what to do with Dirk’s talents. and he treats Dirk like a redheaded stepchild for it. It seems clear to me Avery has been trying to throw Dirk under the bus from day one. But what doesn’t make sense about this story is that if Dirk and Cuban are so close then Avery should know that Mark would never trade him. I don’t think Avery would ever try to convince Cuban to trade Dirk. Instead he will try to break Dirk’s spirit and make him quit. And he’s almost done it. .

dallas will never win the championship with this new team now...kidd is one of the best alltime but he won’t be able to make a winner out of "can’t hit a crucial shot"-nowitzki and so the mavs are doomed to mediocrity...sorry dallas .

Im shocked! and cant believe how unloyal and shady Avery and Cuban are..I expected it from Cuban but not Avery!..I was so sad over the trade ..felt so bad for Devin but now, It looks like Devin has the better deal..looks like the Mavs have no loyalty to their players...shame on them! I side with Dirk and Devin.. Cuban is just as much a dictator as Castro!ps- dont get me wrong I like Kidd but the way the Mavs handled the trade was WRONG! .

First of all who is the infallible source that says Avery wanted to trade Dirk??? The whole premise is stupid. A New York newspaper commenting on Dallas, what a shock. The world does not revolve around New York, especially regarding basketball. Yea the Mavs haven’t won a championship but at least they are not in the EAST. It’s strange I live in Dallas and I haven’t heard a word of this crap until I read something out of a New York paper. Tell us who this source is then people can run there mouths. .

I agree with Avery, Dirk disappears when his team needs him most. The NBA finals and the first round playoff exit justify it .

This is easy. I take Dirk’s side, because even though he had a weak playoff series, it initially wasn’t a Nowitzki leadership problem. It was Avery Johnson who elected to rest his players toward the end of the season against the Warriors. Had he played all his guys with the urgency to eliminate a team that had been giving them trouble the previous year and change, maybe, their first round match up would have been versus the LA Clippers. Not to mention Avery’s mistake to fold under pressure and fall into Nellie’s small ball trap. AJ chose to start a lineup that was not the ingredient to a 67 win season. So, Avery you shouldn’t be too quick to lash on Dirk, take a look in the mirror, General. .

Dirk! Yeah he sucked against the warriors. Remember first that Nelly taught Dirk the NBA game. His performance agains the Spurs in the play offs a couple years ago should show his true merit over the years! .

They should have traded him. The guy just can’t perform under pressure. Yeah, yeah it’s the same old arguments over and over again—but, he did it again in the all-star game! Everyone watching saw a tall german dude shooting the ball and missing. It’s not as if he was playing for the 76ers, it was an all-star game. Any pa-------at all was more than likely to equal points. I love world basketball, but I hate this guy. .
