Jermaine O’Neal or Scottie Pippen? Is Chris Bosh’s time in Toronto running out?

March 14 09

Recently, Chris Bosh moonlighted as a weatherman. During the forecast, he never mentioned the dark clouds forming over his future with Toronto

In the past, I always believed the Raptors had a legitimate chance at re-signing their franchise face when he hit free agency in 2010. I even wrote on the topic. My view was based on two things: money and Bryan Colangelo.

First, according to the Collective Bargaining Agreement’s Larry Bird rules, Toronto can offer Bosh thirty million dollars more than other teams and an extra year on a ‘max’ contract. Neither is insignificant in the current economic climate.

Second, I had faith in Colangelo, a two-time Executive of the Year. I bought the sound bites and hype. I believed he’d find the right pieces for Bosh and the Canadian dinos’ to excel.

Today, my view has changed. Bosh could very well be gone. He may hop on the first flight south in sixteen months. Toronto, losers of seven straight, is broken and probably can’t be fixed in time to change their lead Raptors’ mind.

ESPN’s Chris Broussard had an interesting take on the 2010 situation. While appearing on The Fan 590’s Hoops, the well-tenured scribe argued Bosh could stay with Toronto and be another Jermaine O’Neal or sign where LeBron James/Dwyane Wade land and be another Scottie Pippen.

For Broussard, it’s money versus legacy. Take the extra bank and have a respectable career like O’Neal. Or, sacrifice a few million and become an all-time great second option next to King James or Flash.

This is an easy choice. Scottie Pippen never looked so good.

There is, however, a wildcard. The unexpected development of Andrea Bargnani gives Toronto options. Currently, the Italian is playing the five-spot, but his finesse game is best suited for power forward next to a blue-collar center.

Of course, you-know-who currently mans power forward. So Colangelo may avoid the 2010 drama and deal Bosh to a team with cap space this summer. One option is Detroit. The Pistons have the prospects to swing a trade, the cap space to offer a long-term ‘max’ contract, and a winning tradition to rival being James or Wade’s running mate.

Bosh understandably ignored the clouds forming over Toronto during his weather forecast. But, through free agency or trade, his time with the Raptors could be ending.

Sarah Credo: Lee for Bosh, LeBron and Chris in New York come 2010
on 03.19.2009
At this point in time, it makes sense to trade him in the offseason. Bargnani is a five. No matter what you guys want to call him, he is a five. Defensively he has gotten better but not necessarily against the elite centres, but whose to say he can’t work on his game this summer too? I think you put him with a strong power forward, like an Amare Stoudamire or even a David Lee who can pick up the slack on the gla-------big time. My suggestion is that they grab one of those guys and get some good pieces in return. If they get Lee, Bosh will go to New York and that is most likely where LeBron will go come 2010, so it is kind of conspirital but in a way, but it can work. If Bosh is really to be a "Pippen" well then what better player to compliment than LeBron James? I know this may be a little late, but what do you guys think? .

JUST FACE IT. CALDERON WAS HURT AND WE GOT TO SEE WHAT BOSH WAS MADE OF. NOT A LEADER. CAN GET 20 PTS AND 8 REBS. GOT A KG BODY BUT NO KG DEFENSE. WHOEVER GIVES THIS GUY A MAX DEAL IS MORE STUPID THAN WASHINGTON GIVING ARENAS 100 MILLION WHO AT BEST IS A SHOTJACKER WHO FILLS SEATS. TRADE BOSH AND GET A HIGH DRAFT PICK AND BE GLAD U GOT RID OF AN OVERPAID 2ND TIER PLAYER. .

Hi Jack, thanks for reading, commenting, and your kind words. You raise lots of good points. CB4 is likely leaving and as a second tier star would be wise to join forces with someone else, as you mention. And I agree Bargnani has talent, but I’m unsure if he is a fit with Bosh. Again, thanks for reading ... .

CB4 would be smart to join forces with an elite swingman. LeBron, like you said, would be an option, especially in Detroit, but i get the feeling that LeBron is staying in Cleveland. I just don’t buy all the NY talk. I could definitely see D-Wade and CB4 in NY together though, maybe even Miami. Personally I think LeBron and D-Wade are undecided on whether to stay or go from their respective current franchises, but I’m sure Bosh is gone from Toronto and will bolt to a winning club. For all you commenters arguing about Adrea Bargnani; He’s a talent, albeit soft and is not a guy that can bang in the paint, just another Dirk in my opinion, a bit more mobile though. Good piece yet again, Oly. .

Lol Khandor your an idiot. Bargnani one dimensional? I’ve never seen ANY legit 7 footer drive the way he does. Did you watch the game today? He was grabbing offensive rebounds, ran the break with marion (and got the assist on that sick dunk), driving, and hitting the outside shot. If you think he’s a one dimensional player, you sir, don’t watch Raptors basketball, or are very naive to it. He’s been a disappointment, but he holds that status no more. Look at his numbers since the new year. He’s putting up legit No.1 overall selection numbers, and he’s still very young. .

The problem with dealing ANdrea and keeping Bosh, is that Bosh may leave as a UFA and the Raps then have neither player. That is a risk!!!! .

Bargnani is a one-dimensional perimeter scoring based Center, with limited redounding ability, and lateral quickness who who still fouls a lot, who has been a disappointment, thus far, as a former No. 1 [Overall] Draft Pick..Chris Bosh, on the other hand, is a multi-dimensional Center who has lived up to the expectations which were placed upon him as a former No. 4 Overall] Draft Pick, If the Raptors trade Chris Bosh because they intend to rely on Bargnani as their franchise player going forward from here, that is an extremely risky proposition which could easily backfire and sadle their organization with a TREADMILL STATUS for years to come.Keeping Bosh and dealing Bargnani is the Better Way to go in this specific situation, not the other way around. .

Think it is a good idea for Bosh to call it quits and start all over again. No one, I mean NO ONE. Not even MJ can win a championship with avg team. They need some what of a talent to fit into a champison equation. I think one of the receipe would be a superstar partner. MJ couldn’t win al lthat ring w/out Pippen, and neither would Pippen win all that ring. If Bosh is really that desperate for winning like he said, follow LeBron/Wade. It is better to build around 2 superstars than from one-man team. I believe that if Wade and Bosh team up, they would be easily top team of the East. All they need is a shooter, and superb bench player that could bring the fire for bench. Personally I think Bosh would love to play with another superstar because he tends to show that he is little bit helpless when he plays big guys like KG or Duncan. He will/should be player like Gasol. Bosh, your future should be like Gasol’s and you might even win few more rings than him if u join wade eariler. .

Hi no-name ...Thanks for reading and commenting. Yeah, part of the reason I write on the Raps is because I get a lot of coverage on them being from Canada and feel that can bring something different to the table. That said, I’ll keep in mind your feelings, so thanks for that. I agree ... Dallas is an option, for sure. Bosh loves his home city. Could Dirk and CB4 play together, though? Still that is an interesting thought and one I have considered. Years back, I had an hour interview with Bosh for a magazine article and the sense I got was that he was still very much connected to Texas. Thanks for reading and commenting. .

Don’t worry, just realised you’re from Canada. .

To be honest. I’m sick of all the raptor articles. There a very average team and will never win anything in the NBA. They can’t attract free agents and it looks like they can’t keep there stars now either. Come back to Dallas, Bosh. .
