Josh Smith-Ty Lue Have ’Incident’, Atlanta Hawk Fans Imagine Deron Williams, Chris Paul, Or Ray Felton At Point GuardNovember 14 07 The Atlanta Journal Constitution gets Josh Smith’s thoughts on reports of a confrontation with Ty Lue:
My Quick Take: Rewind to late June, 2005. David Stern, the NBA’s longtime commissioner and dean of discipline, saunters to the microphone for the second time that day. "With the second pick in the 2005 NBA Draft, the Atlanta Hawks select forward Marvin Williams from the University of North Carolina," Stern announced. By drafting Williams and ignoring their ozone-sized hole at point guard, the Hawks reinforced their reputation as league laughingstock. The usual "get a load of Atlanta" snickers started that summer evening and have continued for two years. Williams will be a fine pro. But the club passed on future All-Stars Deron Williams and Chris Paul for the former Tar Heel. Ray Felton, Charlotte’s up-and-coming table-setter, was also available. In recent drafts, the Hawks stockpiled talent at every position, but ignored the one-spot like a husband tuning-out his wife when she brings up the problems in their relationship. (To be fair, the club selected Acie Law in this June’s lottery.) Nobody knows what happened between Smith and Lue in Detroit. Frankly, it doesn’t matter when reflecting on the big picture. The Hawks would be a much stronger side with Williams, Paul, or Felton running the offense instead of Law or Lue. The players could cancel their April vacations and plan for some playoff shine on ESPN. (Deron Williams or Chris Paul + Atlanta Hawks = playoffs?)
But Atlanta’s management/dysfunctional owners drafted the wrong player. So the second-guessing and snickers will continue. How would Atlanta look with Williams, Paul, or Felton at point guard?
