Kevin Garnett Rumors Expose Shawn Marion’s Issues With Phoenix Suns

June 23 07
CNNSI’s Chris Mannix reports on Phoenix’s chemistry issues:
Which brings us back to Marion. While the Matrix has been one of the most statistically productive players in the league over the last five years, it has become clear that Phoenix is looking to make a change. Word of chemistry issues in the Suns’ locker room has filtered through the league since Phoenix’s second-round ouster. If you discount seldom-used Jalen Rose (one general manager called him "the worst locker room lawyer in the league"), those problems can only be attributed to Marion and Amaré Stoudemire.
Jack McCallum, another CNNSI writer, spent the 2005-2006 season on Phoenix’s bench. He wrote a book, 0:7 Seconds or Less, on his experiences. And McCallum addresses the issues between the Suns and Shawn Marion:
It hurts him that he has never been The Man in Phoenix. Jason Kidd was The Man, then Stephon Marbury was The Man, then Nash became The Man the moment he showed up in the summer of 2004. There have always been other Hamlets, while Marion has been consigned to the role of Rosencrantz or Guildenstern. Worse, Stoudmire before his injury, seemed to have settled into Second Man status behind Nash, leaving Marion as the Third Wheel. After he was selected as an All-Star reserve, Marion said, “Ever since I’ve been in Phoenix, I tried to make myself the face of the Suns on and off the court. That’s what it’s all about.” But he is not the face of the Suns. Nash and D’Antoni are the dual faces, and whenever Marion’s face appears, Stoudmire is likely to, also. That drives him crazy. He appreciates Nash and gets along with him, but doesn’t feel the same about Stoudemire.

“Around here it’s Steve this and Amare’ that,” says Marion. “What people forget is that I had to adjust my game to different people. I had J-Kidd. I had Steph. Now I have Steve. All of them are different. I made the adjustments. You got to give me credit now. Don’t overlook that.

“The other thing is, people judge players on points. And I think that’s wrong.” That is obviously directed towards Stoudemire.
My Quick Take: I recommend McCallum’s book. I read it on Boxing Day last year. He takes the reader inside Phoenix’s season and locker room. It’s a must-have for NBA fans.

It’s important to be fair. 0:7 Seconds or Less also looks at Marion’s positive traits. D’Antoni and the Suns’ coaching staff like The Matrix, but find him extremely sensitive and, at times, exhausting.

After reading this book, I considered the possibility Marion could be moved. After reading an ESPN The Magazine article on Marion in mid-May, I became convinced Phoenix would eventually trade him-especially if they didn’t make the NBA Finals.

However, I never considered that the Suns would chase Kevin Garnett. It blindsided me. There are a couple of issues holding up a K.G-Nash partnership in the Arizona desert.

First, Robert Sarver, Phoenix’s owner, wants to steer clear of the luxury tax. Adding The Big Ticket would add, well, a big ticket to the team’s payroll. Steve Kerr, the team’s new GM, was hired to shed salary.

Second, Minnesota doesn’t want Marion. The Wolves will only trade Garnett for Stoudemire. Ironically, even with trade rumors, Marion is getting overshadowed and eclipsed by STAT.

Right now, the Suns and Wolves are at an impasse. A K.G. deal could still materialize. It’s just not the slam dunk of a few days ago.

One thing is clear: Phoenix has to trade Marion. It might not be for Garnett. But it has to happen this summer. The sooner, the better.

How do you bring Marion back after these trade rumors?

Shawn is a fantastic NBA player, and is so appreciated by the team, coaching staff, and fans in Phoenix for all the intangables he offers to make a team win games. However he is not a flashy 1 on 1 self initiating scorer (ie Vince Carter or Amare), and does not take opponents off the drible. He feeds off of rebounds, loose balls, steals, and passes from players such as Nash or J-Kidd. This by definition eliminates him from being THE MAN, because he relies on other players and the game play. Shawn is in for an unfortunate suprise if he leaves the Suns to another team to be the # 1 option, because he will find more of the same or be on a really bad team. Shawn, Phoenix loves you, stay where you are because the gra-------will not be greener on the other side, and if you want to be THE MAN, learn to dribble drive and cross over from the top of the key. .

Marion is a whiner! He needs to learn how to shoot the ball properly! Get rid of him. Add KG to the Suns and they win the Championship next year. .

Do not trade Marion. That is big mistake. Phoenix needs bench players. Nobody can replace Marion in this league. .

Ive been waiting for the suns to trade Marion for years. He’s productive yes.. But he cant create his own shot. You cant have a guy making the most money on your team not have a go-to move. He doesnt even have a crossover dribble. He takes bad shots. He has no fade away jump shot. If he developed these things and worked on his game he’d be the man. What is with players now? Jordan worked on his game every year. These guys come back looking the same. .

The 05 - 06 seaseon the Suns got lucky with their playoff matchups (Lakers then Clippers) . I hate it when people say how far they got without Amare, get a clue. Shawn is a great player; however, Amare is an elite player. If he was playing his natural position, the four, he would be killing the leauge, but it’s not like he’s struggling at the five. Back to my point, why do you think when trades are involved the first person the other team wants is Amare not Shawn! If you ask me why the Suns have not gotten to the finals, it’s not the players, but the coach’s system. It’s fun to watch and sales tickets, but until they focus on pounding the ball down in the block, they will not make it to the finals. The proof is the past two season’s playoff results. .

If being the highest paid player on the Suns is not good enough for Marion he needs to leave. James Worthy was behind Magic and Kareem and he never complained. He could have been the best player on any other team, but he decided to play for a championship team. And what is this "the Man" stuff all about? Maybe Kidd and definitely Marbury thought of themselves as that, but Nash never has and never will. Marion has the biggest contract on the Suns and he needs to stop whining. Besides, he chokes during the big games anyways, but that is what Nash and STAT are for. .

"The other thing is, people judge players on points. And I think that’s wrong.”Well said Shawn! The guy may be insecure but he right; he IS overlooked! Look how far the Suns got last year without Amare. What he does wins games. But if he wants to be "the man" he should hog the ball, chuck it desperately every possesion and get 25pts. per game on 33% shooting. .

marion is agood player who is very versitile, but the issue with the salary cap is a big factor if a trade occurs. idoubt they are going to trade him for garnett when he would get paid just as much or more. but think if the trade did happen. amare would play power while KG played center. along with diaw, nash and bell, thats one heck of a starting 5 .

Marion is an important part of the Suns and this families favorite player. His talent is unstoppable! He has the energy to match Steve Nash night after night and that is a tall order. If the fans get to vote we vote for our favortive PHX SUN to remain right where he is and get the respect he deserves. .

Shawn Marion should stay in Phoenix! His ability to run the floor makes this team go, and the Suns love the Matrix. Besides, the Suns would have won the title if David Stern hadn’t suspended Stoudemire and Diaw. .
