Kobe Bryant & L.A. Lakers’ Fans Can’t Be Happy With Mitch Kupchak’s Comments

August 13 07

The Daily News discusses the Lakers’ off-season with the team’s GM Mitch Kupchak:

On the team’s off-season:

Mitch Kupchak: If this was the team that we started the season off with, I would be fine with it. I feel that we’re an improved team over last year. I look at our team and look at a very balanced team with veteran and young players.

On the expectations and pressure:

MK: I do feel there is more pressure or more expectations to dramatically change this team. My season-ending comments were that we were going to be more aggressive than we normally are. That’s a byproduct of the season ending the way it did. But having said that, we’re not going to do deals or sign players just to do it. We’re going to do things we feel are going to improve the team. We feel that our team as it is structured right now, is improved over last year.

On Kevin Garnett going to the Boston Celtics:

MK: I think you could say 29 teams in the NBA today are looking at Boston and saying, Wow, is that something they could have done and how much better are they going to be? Clearly that’s the deal of the offseason. Without talking about a particular player in this league, I know how much time we spent on being aggressive this summer. I know as an organization we did everything we could do to do a deal that would improve the team.

On future moves:

MK: Just because there hasn’t been a dramatic trade in July, doesn’t mean there won’t be one down the road. We’re only going to look to do something that is going to improve the team. We don’t want to go sideways. And certainly we don’t want to go backwards just because there are `expectations and pressure.

My Quick Take: In the past I have defended Mitch Kupchak, the Lakers’ GM. I felt he inherited a difficult set of circumstances and I also appreciated his blue-collar effort for the old school, showtime Lakers of the nineteen eighties.

I can’t do it anymore. I can’t have Mitch’s back. Not after these comments.

How can he be happy with the current talent on the purple-and-gold’s roster? Is he shooting for mediocrity? Best case scenario, these Lakers are a six-through-eight seed in the Western Conference playoffs. Worst case scenario, they miss the playoffs altogether.

Either scenario isn’t going to satisfy Laker-nation and their all-world superstar, Kobe Bryant. It won’t cut it. And Kupchak has justified Bryant’s frustration by publicly stating that he’s content with how things have unfolded this summer.

Bryant’s attitude often leaves something to be desired. But he wants to win. And that hunger for success and NBA Titles can never be questioned. Ever. Bryant demands the best from himself and everyone around him, while Kupchak, the team’s GM, the person who is supposed to set an example, is content with simply making the effort to improve.

What are the players supposed to think? Losing is okay provided you made the effort.

Bryant understands the NBA doesn’t award little league ribbons for trying your best. And he won’t roll with anyone who is satisfied with being a bridesmaid. That applies to on-court play or trying to acquire Jason Kidd or Kevin Garnett. Second place only counts in horseshoes.

With this in mind, can we be surprised there’s trouble in Hollywood? Can we be surprised that the NBA’s glamour team is so absolutely dysfunctional right now? And can we be surprised that Bryant wants a trade?

The Lakers must do more than overhaul their playing roster; they must overhaul their front office, too. Kupchak is like Rob Babcock in Toronto. He’s over-matched and out of his element; the Lakers must find a Bryan Colangelo type of executive who can quickly rebuild the roster, manage the politics of dealing with the Buss family, and get Bryant to buy-in to his vision.

And, most importantly, their new GM can’t be happy with simply making the effort to improve.

I simply can not believe that the premier NBA franchise has this LOSER for a GM. Why is he still employed by the Lakers? He has done nothing but wreck our team, making one STUPID move after another, and missing one opportunity after another. We are going to continue in free fall as long as this moron is running the team. Every time he opens his mouth he just confirms what we all know - that he is a COMPLETE IDIOT. It is long over due to get rid of this Bozo and bring someone in with at least half of a brain. .

kobe is one of the top 15 players the nba has ever seen. kupcake needs to build around him and take advantage of his prime. he is the worst gm, i mean who trades caron butler for kwame brown, that trade pretty much screwed us, we would have so many more trade options. we couldve had oneal bryant and butler. he wasted money by signing divac, mckie, shammond, and radmonovic, we could have saved that money and used it on a superstar. by saying that he is happy with the roster we know that kupcake is a loser and should be fired .

Way back when, when the Lakers made the foolish decision to let Shaq go, and chose build the team around Kobe, I told all my friends and family that the Lakers would never win a championship with Kobe leading the team. My reasoning? "Elementary my dear Watson." Everything rises and falls on leadership, and although shaq may not have been the perfect NBA player (who is?) he was always willing and ready to lead his team into battle, and more importantly, his teammates were willing to follow him. Kobe is willing to lead his team mates, but they don’t follow, they watch. At the pro level, the game is 10% talent, and 90% team chemistry. This begins at the top, and flows down to the team managers and water boys. The Lakers’ greatest problem is not talent, it’s a lack of team chemistry; something they lost when they broke up a team that competed for the NBA title four out of five years. I agree with you, Mitch is a nice guy, but he is out of his league when it comes to demonstrating the ability to deal with the challenges of managing the front office of an organization like the Lakers. He also does not know how to relate to the players, (especailly stars) on his roster. It’s not all his fault. He’s dealing with a kid with an ego the size of a small planet. Kobe does not respect Mitch, and Mitch has not earned the respect.I have been a Laker fan for 30 years. What they need is a true leader in the front office who has the respect of the players, and who understands how to mamuever the tricky waters of the NBA. (Jerry West was a master at this.) I don’t know that there are too many people out there who fit the bill. The new manager must make "strong team chemistry is number one prioriyt. Winning always takes care of itself when a team has strong chemistry. So for now, Let’s pray for the Lakers, they are going to need it this year. I predict no better than a repeat of last season. They will be outsted in the first round of the playoffs, unless they are able to aquire a couple of players who can play well along side Kobe. (I’m glad Fisher is back simply because he is a quality person and a dedicated player.) DGJ .

Since Jerry West left the Lakers have slowly bled to death. Sure, Phil Jackson was a great coach, but his ego was up to his big ears. Sure, Shaq and Kobe were talented but they could only do so much without a supporting cast and an aimless management team led by Kupcake.West left because of a power fued with Phil Jackson over issues like Glen Rice. Phil had no business fighting with Westman, not after he was responsible for Kobe, Shaq, Horry, and Fish. The only players who brought titles to LA.The Lakers are dead. They will never recover unless management changes and Jim Buss leaves town. .

Putting any blame on Kobe is b.s. 1st - the problems started when Shaq left the Lakers... and he left because of BAD MANAGEMENT... you don’t blame an employee for issues - you blame the manager. I’m a manager, so I know that if something goes wrong - even if my employees are effin’ up, it’s ultimately my fault... I need to manage better. Well, Jerry and Mitch needed to manage better back in the Shaq days... they didn’t. Buss handled it all wrong. And Mitch is an idiot. He will ultimately go down as the GM that lost Shaq, Payton, Malone, Kidd, Garnett, Nowitzki, Kobe (if he leaves), and probably even Bynum! Yes, that’s right... Mitch is putting so much stock in Bynum (just like they did Kobe), and I bet ultimately they will jank up and lose Bynum due to what... Due to BAD MANAGEMENT. .

Mitch Kupchak is an idiot, and it pains me to say this, but I hope Kobe goes, and I hope the Lakers suck so that Jerry Buss can realize how bad he messed up. I have been a huge Lakers Fan since the 80’s and have never disliked and single person in sports more than the over achieving moron that I think Mitch Kupchak is. .

Kupchak is a bad manager. He’s talking about not signing or dealing players. How the hell is the lakers gonna get better without signing or deals? And he says whenever they lose at lease you put the effort into it. SCREW HIM!! The lakers needs to win games not lose games. He better sign some good players or else the laker fans will go on a rampage. That is all i have to say. POINT BLANK .

I think kuchpak is a hack but I don’t think he’s the only one to blame. As far as I’m concerned Kobe can stay or leave. Of coarse i’d be happy if he’d stay, but as I’ve always claimed: I’m a Laker fan, not a Kobe fan. The bigger problem I think is that Kobe believes that he’s bigger than the game and bigger than the organization. What he fails to realize is that the Lakers organization is a living breathing legend. In 20 years Kobe’s name will be a segway between Jerry West and some future stars. I personally blame Kobe for lack of leadership. Its easy to blame your talent but why is it that former Lakers always go on to be key role players on other teams? .

Kobe, KupCake, and Buss all deserve eachother because all of them are whiners who want evrything handed to them on a silver platter and cry when they don’t get what they want. Kobe lovers deserve their lousy Lakers because they always whine about poor Kobe and how bad poor Kobe has it. You Kobe lovers have exactly what Kobe wants you all to have....a whiny cry-baby attitude like him. .
