Kobe Bryant, LeBron James, and Dwyane Wade shouldn’t share MVP honours

April 05 09

NBA news mixed with analysis …

Their News: "If I had to pick, you know what I’d do? For the first time in history, we’d have three MVPs [LeBron, Kobe and D-Wade]." Bill Russell, as quoted in the (Orlando Sentinel)

Our Very Quick Analysis: There is precedence for co-winners.

In 1994-95, Grant Hill and Jason Kidd shared Rookie of the Year honours and superstars have split the MVP trophy at All-Star games. So Russell’s idea isn’t that far-fetched, especially when considering the fine season Bryant, James, and Wade have each had.

After all, Black Mamba’s Lakers are on top of the Western Conference, ‘King James’ and his Cavaliers have the league’s best record, and ‘Flash’ has put the Heat on his shoulder following their disastrous 2007-08.

Regular season MVP is different. It’s the crème de la crème of awards and the currency in which greatness is measured. Also, it provides a record for fans to trace the game’s history. Then there is the fact it’s decided by a detailed voting procedure.

Most importantly, the MVP award generates discussion and headlines. Fans, coaches, and even the players, themselves, all have opinions on who should win the award. These diverse opinions create much debate, which is good for the league.

Russell is a diplomat. But MVP has always been a one-person award decided by voting. And it should stay that way.

Should Bryant, James, and Wade share the MVP award? Let us know in the comment box below and come back to HoopsVibe the Blog for more NBA coverage. Photo courtesy of 3 Musketeer’s Corners.

j.k. so you think the mvp award should go to the best player who has the better teamates and better coach, putting more weight on the players and coaches, rather than that of the player who is the person actually getting the award?...wade should get it in my opinion because he has carried his team to the playoffs single handedly, no way kobe should even come close to getting it because he has gasol, odom, bynum, and a hall of fame coach, wade with a bunch of young players and a rookie coach has his team in the playoffs...not to mention his bpg in the last 5 minutes of a game when it is is a close game is off the charts...i think its like 4.5 or so..compared to lebron and kobes is .5 and 0 .

The MVP Award should never be shared between players. Wade, James, and Bryant have more than met the requirements to be the MVP which is another reason why they shouldn’t have to share it. The MVP race cannot and must not end with a tie or a three-way tie at that. Wade has done an amazing job of carrying the Heat on his shoulders, Kobe has had another great year, but this is Lebron’s year. His numbers, the team’s record and how he makes his teammates so much better are the reasons why he is the MVP. In addition, Dirk won the award for being the best player on the best team ( Nash should have won that year), then by that logic Lebron is once again the winner at this point in time and I only say at this point because there are still 6 games left in which the Lakers could end up with the best record. Either way, Lebron has earned the MVP so reward him with it, it will be a consolation of some sort when Bryant and the Lakers take the championship. .

I am a die hard Lakers fan and a huge Kobe Bryant fan. NBA owes him at least MVP awards but I don’t think this is his year. The NBA should have given Kobe the MVP when Nash one his 2nd. he had 9 straight games of 40 pts and a killer year overall. That alone should have been reason, but because of KOBE’s history at the time they didn’t wanna give it to him. Stupid voters have no clue. CHRIS PAUL should be mentioned....why isn’t he? .

I AGREE WITH J.K COMPLETELY, ITS GONNA HAPPEN THIS YEAR. LEBRON JAMES WILL WIN HIS FIRST M.V.P, BUT IT SURE WONT BE HIS LAST. THE LEBRON JAMES DOMINANCE SAGA WILL OFFICIALY BEGIN. NOW LETS JUST SEE IF WHEN ITS ALL SAID AND DONE HE WILL BE KNOWN AS THE GREATEST? OR WILL HIS AIRNESS MICHAEL JORDAN STILL HOLD THAT NAME .

It should go to the guy with the league’s best record: Kobe or Lebron. They are the best two individual players, so reward the guy who wins the most. .

The MVP should go to LeBron this year. MVP means Most Valuable Player. It was not always given to the best statistical player in the league, but best player on the top notch team. If MVP was given to the best stats player, kobe should of got the MVP long long time ago. Now comparing the team record, Wade is out. It leaves Kobe and LeBron. LeBron and Kobe has almost identical team record, however LeBron has slight edge over Kobe on his stats. Therefore LeBron should get it not because he isn’t better player than Kobe or Dwayne. It is simply because he has better team record than Wade, and better stats than Kobe .

Kobe Bryant should get it, it wouldnt phase me if lebron got it either though his numbers and record are MVP standard but Wade shouldnt get it, kobes numbers were so much better in 05-06 and he was in the same situation as wade but his supporting cast was probably worse so if wade gets it it would be very very unjust .

It would take even more meddling from Stern and pals than usual for this Disney job to go down. I could see it happening if it were an award simply issued by the league, but the fact that it’s determined on the basis of first-, second- and third-place votes made by a fairly sizeable panel means that a genuine tie is very unlikely. Still, if they can rig the draft lottery... .
