Kobe Bryant & Los Angeles Lakers Past Point of No Return

June 16 07
Apparently, Kobe Bryant was doing a hell of a lot more than hanging with Ronaldinho in Spain.

He was plotting his exit strategy from the Lakers-again. If there was a second trade demand in some exotic Euro-locale, then the Lakers and Bryant have officially passed the point of no return.

Quite simply, there’s no going back. There’s no Kodak-moment reunion in La-La land. No happily ever after Hollywood story.

Two weeks ago, Kobe Bean’s comments could be brushed aside. The man was talking out of frustration. The man was angry. Stephen A. Smith caught him at a weak moment and got him to open up.

But the parties involved had apparently agreed to work things out and find common ground. Zen-Master Phil even called and suggested that: “they talk things out.”

Well, ladies and gentlemen, it was all a smokescreen-one giant Vegas-style bluff for the ages. This was a cover.

Kobe Bryant wants out. He always has. The last two weeks since the Stephen A. Smith interview was simply a cooling off period, which all sides involved could use as a time to consider their next move.

Want evidence of my Oly Stone conspiracy theory?

For the last two weeks, Kobe and the Lakers have played both sides of the fence.

Bryant has publicly committed to the Lakers, while also leaving all his options open for the future. I’m sure members of the Kobe camp have used their back channel contacts around the Association to get the word out about Bryant’s desire for a new home.

The Lakers have publicly maintained that Bryant is their franchise guy, while also fielding calls from other teams about a trade. Other GMs have surely called GM X (I know Mitch Kupchak is officially the GM, but I have no idea what’s actually going on with L.A.’s front office) and thrown out some possibilities for a deal.

So don’t think GM X, again a variable representing the unknown GM of the Lakers, hasn’t considered the possibilities. And he/she should have a plan for trading Kobe.

The last two weeks came to ahead in Spain, when Bryant asked Buss for a second trade.

But how do the Lakers get equal value for Bryant?

Such an idea doesn’t exist. In fact, it’s incomprehensible. There’s no way to do it. Keep in mind Bryant has a no trade clause and can pick his destination. And we haven’t even mentioned balancing salaries under the cap.

So a deal will be complicated. And how does next season play out? Will Kobe report to training camp if he’s still with the Lakers?

These are answers none of us have. But we do know that Bryant and the Lakers are moving towards closing this unresolved issue. And right now, it looks like they will be going their separate ways.

i am an avid laker fan, and the fact of the matter is, the lakers are not getting better. they are not in it to win, rather, are in a questionable situation as to which direction they want to thwart to. Kobe is in la for one and only one reason, for the monetary purposes. Buss knows la is a star-studded town and the only reason kobe is their is to sell tickets. Buss does not care whether or not kobe cries or pouts, as long as he is selling tickets. That set aside, i do think that we cannot make the same mistake as we did with shaq. all those people that are throwing trade scenarios, get it in your heads, he is here for 4 years with a clause in his contract that gives him the option to opt out of his contract! Get it in your heads. And just think about it, can you really trade kobe bryant, match the salaries and get the same return? i do not think so, unless its for wade, lebron, melo; but that is out of the question of course. there is no player as dynamic and feared as kobe. if one sits down and thinks about it, if kobe were to be traded, the reputation he has fought to build after all his rape allegations would be in vain. Kobe career will descend, and the lakers wont sell tickets. the fact of the matter is kobe isn’t going anywhere! The lakers are the yankees of basketball; you either hate them or love them.Laker for Life .

keep kobe. he is blamed for being a ball hogg when scores 20 or more and when he scores less and passes he gets blamed for that two. what is a guy supposed to do instead of asking for one more player to help him out so he can score and pa-------and hopefully not get blamed for either. .

You know what Matt - I think you’re right! Lakers should not give Kobe what he wants - instead make him play at least one more year. They’ll probably be in a better position to get better trades for him then anyway. Lakers trade him now they get a few scrubs in return - unless the Bulls trade works out - in which case I say lets trade him. I’d love to see Gordon, Deng, Odom, and Bynum play together. I swear Odom, once he gets healthy, is good enough to lead this team. Odom is a LeBron without the power dunks. Think about it - without Kobe, Odom can average 20 pts, 10 rebounds, and almost 10 assists per game. And they want to trade this guy? For Jermaine O’neal? If I were Kobe, I’d say "hell no, lamar don’t go, Bynum don’t go, get us a new point guard and lets play like a team!" .

Just after the "Colorado" thing was starting to dissipate and Kobe’s image was improving, he pulls this??? Kobe is causing irreparable damage to his legacy on a daily basis. The "spoiled brat" attitude is getting really tired. I say make Kobe finish his contract. If he doesn’t want to play, oh well - then sit. I think the worst thing anyone can do right now is give Kobe what he wants. Kobe is so fortunate to be doing what he loves for a living and making millions doing it. Dear Kobe... Just play ball, play it the best you can, and shut up - stop crying! Honor your word. Where’s your integrity? Take the hi-road this time. Sheesh… .

Kobe is the the money maker so the lakers cant lose him. Without Kobe the lakers become the Cavs of the pre Lebron era.... on that note, if we are going to lose kobe a straight up trade for Lebron would suffice. .

Kobe is a hardheaded individual who does not have the maturity to make the right decisions. Heck, he was engaged to his wife while she was still in High School. That caused a rift beween him and his family, but a spoiled brat gets his way Just like his desire to get rid of Shaq, The problem here is that Dr. Buss failed to realize how immature and mentally unstable Kobe really is. It seems to me Kobe’s selfishness created this team and now he wants to move on. If he wan’t so hardheaded and so selfish with the ball, we might have more players wanting to play with this team. Why does everyone want to play with Shaq and no one basically want to play with Kobe? It’s as simple as one person believing in something and not having enough maturity to see that he does not have all the answers. I say we should trade this GEN-Y unloyal employee and use his value to rebuild this team. Kobe himself is not the Lakers its a team of players who make this team great. .

the lakers need more talent in the front court and back court. vladimir radmonovic, brian cook, smush parker, shammond williams and kwame brown is just taking up salary cap space. mitch kups---sorry i mean kupchak is not a GM he is a director. they need a real GM to make trades to get the lakers back to championship form. one more thing if kobe is killing himself on offence to give the team some spark cause the shooters cant knock down open shot and make plays for themselves how can he play defence if the other guys is not defending. defending is a team basedon all not 1 .

Boy Kobe sure has a lot of people fooled. He hasn’t been planning this for the past two weeks, he’s been planning this for the past few years. He’s done exactly what he wanted to do. Look at his contract. Why do you think he has those clauses in there? He started planning this a long time ago. Stop blaming Mitch Kupchak. Jerry Buss and the others faults amount to this - they have allowed Kobe to dictate everything instead of standing up to him and doing what is right. Now Kobe’s done what snakes do, he’s turned and stricken them when they least expected it, and they’re acting surprised. They were charmed and mesmerized by his fake ways. They gave their all, blindly, foolishly, and now it’s coming back to haunt them. They should have never allowed themselves to be controlled by this selfish, immature person, Kobe Bean Bryant. Trade him. .

No, man. I’m done defending Kobe. Its clear he doesn’t want to be a Laker anymore - probably because he knows all too well that LA can’t get a good-enough combo of players to compete in the west. I suspect he sees how easy it is in the eastern conference and wants a piece of that. If a team like Cleveland can make it to the finals, then the NY Knicks with Kobe, Marbury, O’Neal might be able to go all the way. Time’s running out for KB24 and I don’t think he believes he can compete with Phoenix, Dallas, and San Antonio in the west. Lakers front office did a horrible job for the past 3 or 4 years and it probably led to this, but kobe could have given it one more shot. He would’ve kept more of his fans that way. Now, I predict he’s going to lose a lot of fans. Don’t think his new jersey with NY will be a hot seller right away. But its his career so let him do it, and Kobe fans just have to move on. We can still be his fan, since most Laker fans today are probably more Kobe fans rather than Lakers fans anyway. Believe it or not, I think the Lakers would be in better shape if Bryant left - then they wouldn’t have to completely gut the team. They just need to replace Smush Parker with a real point guard, and get themselves Grant Hill or someone decent. Or the trade with the Bulls sound pretty good too. I can see Odom + Bynum going pretty far - that may be the future of the lakers! So, go East young man, go East! .
