Kobe Bryant Not Leaving L.A. Lakers, But Rescinding Trade Demand Makes No Sense

January 08 08

The Chicago Tribune’s Sam Smith reports on Kobe Bryant’s status with the Lakers:

Kobe isn’t going anywhere and never was. He hates to admit it, but he’s better off, and the talk is the Lakers are looking hard to move Kwame’s expiring contract for another piece and make a serious championship run.

My AM Take: Smith is right. The Lakers had no chance of receiving equal value for Bryant because such a thing doesn’t exist. And Bryant realized the teams on his wish-list lack the Lakers’ depth and talent.

All parties are better off with the status quo. So why won’t Bryant rescind his trade demand?

Bryant’s request for a trade is a slight at the Buss family. The superstar believes the eccentric owner scapegoated him after the Shaquille O’Neal trade. Recently, Bryant had issues with Buss giving a tell-all interview to the L.A. Times. Rescinding his trade demand would endorse the Buss clan as owners.

By keeping his status unknown, Bryant is forcing the club to stay proactive. Fair or not, the superstar believes withdrawing his trade request would allow the front office to hit the snooze button and stop trying to add talent.

Bryant’s on-going trade demand gives him leverage over the organization. Don’t expect him to back down. Even if the club is winning.

Kobe is the single greatest threat in the NBA from anywhere on the court, and if you ask the lakers front office, apparently off the court as well. He is the only person that the lakers would trade bynum and odom and you name it for... if he was on another team. And despite the generally agreed poor taste in which the Kobester carried out his business this past summer, it was obviously driven by his will and desire to win, which is what is admired about the man. And, something good did come out of it all,.. the teamates took notice and have really stepped up, except for Kwame, who would if he could. Actually, despite Kwames constantly bruised anlkle, his foot work is very decent. I just do not understand how his hands constantly fail him. Move the elbows kwame!!! Tai Chi baby, tai chi, absorb the ball!!!! AAArgh, ....Cheers to the Lakers continued success and this hard nose winning mentality, .

rbtr, use your brain! If you had the worlds best player would u want him traded? no..He along with the zen master are making LA a threat. Bynum is getting better and better, and word of mouth is Javaris is quite a talented player, but still a rookie so over time he will get more mins. All LA needs 2 do is trade Kwame! .

sorry rtbr..but you’re gonna keep gettin bagged...dude...lakers reserves are good..but the only guy outta that group you listed that has potential to be a superstar is bynum...farmar can start on some teams, luke is a great facilitator, but none of those guys can possibly replace bryant to be the core of the lakers...and moral players? kobe has been with the lakers his entire career, he is a player dedicated to excellence all the time and he wants to win...what? you want him to wait till he’s gary payton’s age to get another chance at a ring? not like he asked to join the celtics .

rtbr - the Laker front office lied to Kobe. Why should he not react to that? If you feel like blaming someone, why not blame the front office for causing the situation in the first place? Oh yes, and what is "qulity"? .

Bynam ,,,not Bryant is the laker future. His new team of Farmar,, Crittenton,Ariza ,Walton are the future you build Chasmpionships with. Unload Bryant ,, now when he is hot for future picks and two young players ! Not equal value but lets build with qulity "moral" ,players that won’t quit on us one day!!! .
