Kobe Bryant’s 81 or Carmelo Anthony’s 33?

December 14 08

Each week, HoopsVibe the Blog drops a player comparison for fans to weigh in on. We call it head-to-head ...

Occasionally, basketball fans witness history. Goose bumps overtake their body because they know the player, team, or teams they’re watching are dropping a special, record-breaking performance.

For me, I love when a player hits his offensive zone. You know what I mean –an individual gets so hot from the floor he believes the basket is bigger than Oprah and Dr. Phil. All shots, no matter how improbable, go in.

Two players have gotten down like the combined weight of our favourite talk show divas. In late January 2006, Los Angeles’ Kobe Bryant scorched Toronto for 81 points, while recently Denver’s Carmelo Anthony tallied 33 points in a single quarter versus Minnesota.

In this edition of head-to-head, HoopsVibe The Blog wants to know which scoring spree is most impressive: Black Mamba’s 81 total points or Melo’s 33 in a 12 minute frame? As always, read both arguments, watch both video clips, and drop an opinion in the comment box below.

The case for Bryant’s 81 points …

  • It was the second-highest scoring outburst of all time.
  • Wilt Chamberin, a seven-footer, set the all-time mark against smaller players and less sophisticated athletes.
  • Bryant went off despite the Raptors using man-to-man, box-in-one, zone, denial, and several other elaborate defensive systems.
  • Phil Jackson, a veteran NBA player, Hall of Fame coach, and bench boss for the Lakers and Bulls’ dynasties, commented, "That was something to behold. It was another level. I’ve seen some remarkable games, but I’ve never seen one like that before."

The case for Anthony’s 33 points in a quarter …

  • He matched a thirty-year old record set by George ‘Ice Man’ Gervin.
  • In the past, Anthony has been called selfish. The Nuggets, however, needed his scoring to beat a hungry T-Wolf side.
  • Chauncey Billups, a world champion and All-Star, had this to say: “I’ve played against some great ones and played with some great ones. That’s the best I’ve ever seen in a 12-minute span.”

Our Call: Bryant gets the slight nod; 81 points is ridiculous. However, I believe Anthony has evolved and matured. On Wednesday, he provided a necessary lift with his 33-point outburst and then unselfishly followed the team concept for the rest of the night.

Bryant’s 81 or Anthony’s 33? Which scoring outburst is most impressive? Get at us in the comment box below and come back to HoopsVibe The Blog for more NBA tidbits. Photo courtesy of gg99.

Actually, no-name poster is wrong the Lakers blew the Raptors out by 20 points in the game Kobe got 81 ... 122-104 And the Lakers were up by like 15 heading into the third against a terrible and sad, sorry Raptor team that was about to be dismantled! Still, Bryant’s 81 is impressive and I believe it was an amazing game. .

"I respect Melo for going off and than fitting in for that fourth quarter, so Denver can win...while Melo had to revert back to the team system for his team to win in the fourth"Your article was about comparing Melo’s 33 points IN THE 3RD QUARTER against Kobe’s 81 points IN A GAME. What Melo had to do in the 4TH QUARTER is IRRELEVANT to the comparison. And Kobe was playing in the system for the first 2 quarters and had to turn it on in the second half to get the W for his team. .

Hi no-name ... Thanks for writing. It is a comparison based on the two best single scoring outbursts I have seen over the last few years. It’s not meant to be overly scientific, which I have mentioned over-and-over again. I respect Melo for going off and than fitting in for that fourth quarter, so Denver can win. For me, that is a difficult thing. I’m not in any way downplaying Bryant’s achievement ... In the game against Toronto, after a certain point everything went through Bryant, while Melo had to revert back to the team system for his team to win in the fourth ... I think you are overlooking how difficult this is ...And yeah, sometimes out of the box comparision are worth doing ... Nevertheless, thanks for your thoughts and keep reading cause I will bring more ’inane’ comparisons ... Cheers ... .

The most impressive quarter I’ve ever seen is Isiah Thomas and his 25 pts (think it was that) against the Lakers in the 4th quarter 1988 NBA Finals game 6. The most impressive thing about that however was that it came with a badly-sprained ankle. No, it wasn’t 33 however the fact that it came in the 4th quarter of an elimination NBA FINALS game and on the road - against Magic Johnson, Michael Cooper and the rest of the ’80’s Lakers (probably the greatest team ever assembled in NBA history). As for Kobe’s 81 vs ’Melo’s 33 - clearly Kobe was better. Kobe’s 55 pts in the 2nd half of that game is more impressive than 33 in a quarter also. Kobe had back-to-back quarters of 27 & 28 in that game. Kobe has had at least one 30 point quarter before that I can remember... .

how about kobe bryants 30 point quarter vs the jazz? 9-9 from the field, including two 3 pointers, and 10-10 from the line.. also hitting 13 straight fg’s at one point in the game? mainly jumpers.. all over a 7 foot andrei kirilenko..carmelo had an amazing quarter.. id take kobe’s 81.. i mean come on..i don’t understand why everybody is frustrated wtih the comparison lol.. its just for a lil fun.. but i gotta go with kobe.. multiple 30 point quarters.. and for me.. the 52 agaisnt utah is my favorite kobe game ever. .

this writer has a serious habit (problem) of making the most inane comparisons ever (pierce and kobe some time earlier). just because melo’s scoring achievement is one of the "best single scoring outbursts of the last little while" doesn’t automatically give you an excuse to compare it to something on a completely different plane, or insult it by only "giving it a slight nod" over melo. we’re talking about 81 points, sustained through an entire game compared to 33 sustained through one quarter. and kobe scored 27 and 28 points in the 3rd and 4th quarters, which is hardly a big difference from 33. 30 point quarters are more common than 81 point games. don’t you realize kobe’s the only player in history to have two 30 point quarters? and he did that while outscoring dallas through 3 quarters 62 to 61 in only about 32 minutes. what kind of garbage comparison is this? and i love melo. .

Hi ATL 4 Life ... Thanks for reading and commenting ... I agree Kobe takes this quite easily. But I do think there is something to be said for Melo scoring 33 in the third and than fitting back into the system. As for why I compared them: they are the two best single scoring outbursts of the last little while. Thanks for commenting. Even if you disagreed. .

I agree. Poor comparison. Come on Oly. Surely Kobe got this vote 100% (besides the haters of course) .

33 in a quarter is good. but no body has mentioned this. kobe scored 56... in the SECOND HALF of the 81 point game. to me thats more impressive than 33 in a quarter. i mean that is more than melo’s career high. ANyone agree? .

Hi Bosna Boy, Thanks for commenting. It’s not a perfect comparison. However, we are comparing them because they are the Two outstanding individual scoring performances of the last few years. Melo’s quarter still is amazing. Thanks for commenting .

these records are not good to compare ... Melo’s 33 in one quarter is unbelievable because he shooted 12/15 FG and 4/5 3PT ...that percentage is killing me!Of course - Kobe had his night with 81 but that percentage: 28/46FG ; 7/13 3PT; 18/20 FT. 18 bad shots? of course, he had played for 4 quarters so, it could be like 4 bad shots on one quarter.... I love both records, and although I am fan of nuggets, I will take KB24 ... come on 81 ? \1 ........PS: sory for bad english \1 .
