LeBron James Responds to ’Soulja Boy’ DeShawn Stevenson

March 17 08

My Very Quick Take: The wait is over. LeBron James has officially responded to DeShawn Stevenson calling him “overrated” after Cleveland lost to Washington last Thursday.

All weekend, I was dying for James to hit back publicly. My readers were too. Well, today, the King said his piece to Branson Wright, a reporter with the Cleveland Plains Dealer.

"With DeShawn Stevenson, it’s kind of funny. It’s almost like Jay-Z [responding to a negative comment] made by Soulja Boy. It doesn’t make sense."

Let’s hope the Cavaliers and Wizards meet in the playoffs. A rivalry is building between these teams that goes beyond James and Stevenson. Remember, a few months ago, Washington guard Gilbert Arenas used his blog to criticize Cleveland’s front office for yo-yoing Larry Hughes’ minutes.

Finally, I’m not saying anything about James comparing himself to friend Jay-Z, who is also a minority owner with the Nets. It doesn’t add fuel to the James-to-New Jersey/Brooklyn fire that won’t go out.

It’s not like the King ever wore a navy New York hat to a Yankees-Indians playoff game, right?

What do you think of James’ response? Get at us in the comment box below. Click here to subscribe to Oly Sandor’s NBA Blog and get his AM Take each morning. Image appears courtesy of flickr.com at http://www.flickr.com/photos/7774196@N05/1492256340/

LETS BE REAL PEAPLE, LEBRON IS A TRIPPLE THREAT ANYDAY ON ANY TEAM. HE AINT BETTER THAN JORDAN HE AINT BETTER THAN KOBE YETT, HE HAS THE POTENTIAL TO BE THE MAN JUST LIKE JORDAN WAS, WHOS GONNA DENY THAT, YEAH U HAVE DUNCAN UHAVE MAGIC U HAVE BIRD, AND KARREMM AND WILT, AND STOCKTON, BUT AT THIS AGE IN THIS DAY OFF TIME, LEBRON IS A STEP AHEAD OFF THEM ALL EXCEPT JORDAN PERIOD. I KNOW ITS HARD TO TAKE IN, BUT WE WILL SEE IN THE PLAYOFFS JUST HOW GOOD LEBRON IS. .

Lebron is not second to MJ, Mr Octane. There are many great players above Lebron who have won big games, and that is the most important, such as WIN A CHAMPIONSHIP. Larry Bird, Wilt, Kobe, Duncan, Kareem, Magic, and many more are all better than Lebron their first 5 years in the league. For instance, Duncan can easily average 30 and 13 a night if he wants to, but he plays to win and allow his teammates to get the opportunity. He takes less shots but his field goal percentage is always above 50% his whole career, except one year when he suffered from plantar fascitis and miss plenty of games. Lebron wants statistics that is why he is not in the same level as DUncan, who actually finish college, eventhough as a sophomore had already been offered big money by the NBA, and rejected a $55 million 2 year extension that he was suppose to get with the Spurs and instead accepted $40 million. He would have been the highest paid played in the NBA bit instead he sacrificed himself so the Spurs may not pa-------the salary cap and able to sign more free agents. Lebron will not sacrifice his statistics or money, that is why he went straight from high school to the NBA. Man, i have been watching basketball for 27 years now, and I have never seen a more overrated player than him. .

Hey Nico, you got that right man! Lebron is overrated and he is very cocky. It is wrong the way he tries to humuliate Stevenson by saying he is much more superior and that "it is funny" the way it would be Stevenson who would said it. I mean even if it comes from Kobe, Duncan, or Garnett, superstars in his level, or to the last man on the bench, people have the right to say their opinion and not be attack just because they say something negative to someone who is considered a better player. Octane, I agree with you on only one thing, Tupac is the best rapper ever, not jay Z, but Lebron, I am certain, meant that Jay Z is higher than Souljah Boy that is why he said it to suck up to his friend Jay Z. And to the gu, whoever that is without a screen name, please Lebron is overhyped by the media. Their have ben many players before that are more accomplished than him, but never got the attention. LEBRON IS OVERRATED PERIOD! .

OCTANE, why should he be arrogant? He can be confident but arrogant is a different level. You mean it’s mature for him to belittle people. During the USA Basketball camp, according to the San Antonio Express News, Bowen told Lebron to stop ordering people around and atleast call and remember their first names. This was the first time I saw how James was so arrogant. I mean I cant believe you enjoy this OCTANE, you want someone to be arrogant and people belittiling others just because they have superior status. Any educated and well bred people would disagree with that. .

to TOBLERONE, at this point off lebron carrer he should be a little errogant, i mean nobody has or will put up numbers like that in a few years.but i think comparing jay z to that other guy is funny, becouse jay z aint even the top dogg, TUPAC is. so there your answer, TUPAC is the KING OFF RAP JUST LIKE JORDAN IS THE KING OFF BASKETBALL , NOT jayz , SO LEBRON YOUR STILL SECOND TO THE REAL 23MJ. ANY QUESTIONS...... I DONT THINK SO. .

Stevenson has the right to say anything he wants, even if he is "inferior" to LBJ. The thing is: basket players talk a lot of trash these days outside the court. I don’t think that’s a proof of professionalism. LBJ is a great player, probably one of the best in the league today, but I don’t that he should have said that Jay-Z - Soulya Boy thing. That’s not something a superstar should say. That really makes you look arrogant and cocky, comparing yourself to one of the big rappers today. So I think LBJ should have beaten Stevenson on court, instead of "humiliating" him. That’s what a "superstar" should do. But heck; it’s a mans game. The sort of things happen and by seeing how many people respond to suck an fued, you can see that a lot of people love this game. .

alright what happen last year in the finals. Pistons were allowing 91 ppg which is ridiculous. Easily top three in league. He simply put his team on his back and carried them to the win. He scored the last 25 points. Most of them with atleast two pistons on him. I’m not calling him jordan or magic or bird. They are the gods of basketball, but he is going to go down as one of the greatest to ever play .

I would take Lebron to take more shots duh!. I cant believe you even ask. I just ask him to make more shots that miss it. Hello! The Pistons know Lebron is overrated. Even Hamilton said it before two years ago. The Pistons are a better team and as a team they will beat selfish and cocky Lebron. .

I am sure some fans here will post that Stevenson is taking garbage and defend Lebron. Also some uninformed and uneducated fans will say he is a better player and that Stevenson is a nobody compare to Lebron. That to me is already pathetic. The argument here is that whether what Stevenson said, which he has every right to speak regardless if he is a janitor on the MCI center or the owner of the Wizards, is reality. Those people here that spoke off to categorize Lebron as cocky and overrated are real educated and honest basketball fans. .

Alright porsche, if you owned the Cavs who would you have taking more shots? Ben wallace? or the brick layer Szczerbiak (31%)? He has nobody. Just ask the pistons if Lebron is overated .

Being from Japan, we value modesty from our young athletes. I use to watch Larry and Michael and even Magic or Isiah talk trash, but they never were arrogant like today’s players. Lebron is too proud of himself. I am now keeping my distance as a fan and look for players who have the ability to stay true to the game. Lebron James is an overrated player like Stevenson said. He is already getting comparisons to Jordan, which to me is ridiculous. If we ask all honest and profesional fans if he is overrated, I would say 90% would say he is. Stevenson may be below Lebron as a player, but he is not a liar. .

Hey you without a name. WHy are you comparing Lebron to Stevenson. You mean Stevenson cannot call Lebron overrated because Lebron is a better player? Yes, Lebron is a better player and the dumbest person in the world knows Stevenson is below him in playing basketball. The question is, is Lebron overrated? He is playing on the East and take too many shots, and misses more than he makes. Lebron will never be able to perform in the 90’s the same way he is now. Stevenson lives in America, not in North Korea, so he can say anything he wants even if you feel that he is an inferior player to James. So please, don’t be a suck up and side with Lebron just because you are his fan. Measure and analyze the issue and come up with a reason on why Lebron was called overrated on whether if it is not true or really true. .

hey OCTANE, nobody questions Lebron’s ability to play basketball. Yes he is good! But what Stevenson said is not deragatory. He just said he is overrated. Did he lie or he doesnt deserve to say anything because he is below Lebron. Is Lebron God? If somebody says negative about him, they are saying bs? He is below 50% in the field goal percentage, meaning he miss more shots that he make. Jordan and Larry Bird, who were great scorers were 50% above in their careers, The East sucks and this allowed the Cavs to make the playoffs. If he was in the West, his Cavs would get beaten and not make the playoffs. I actually think even the Warriors are better than the Cavs. So OCTANE, is he overrated or he is being publicized modestly? Is he a humble player or does he overrate himself? .

For also those people who are siding with Deshawn Stevenson..... who is he? He has a 8.9 point, 2.4 rebound, 1.9 assist career average. Been in the league 7 years out of high school. He wants to call lebron overated? 27pt, 7rb, and 6 ast. A night for 4 years. Only 4 people have a higher average in the history of the NBA. And he isn’t even in his prime yet. I just wish LeBron would have gotten mad so he could drop 35pts., 13rbs.,13ast. on them...... Wait. he could do that not mad .

I am a Lebron fan, but I have to admit Stevenson has the right to say what he feels. He never said that Lebron sucks, he only said he is overratd. The media has overhyped Lebron a littl bit, especially when the East is really weak. If the Cavs was on the West, they will be 10 on the standings format, meaning, they will not make the playoffs. Regardless I like his game when he drives, but as far as overrated, I may agree with Stevenson. And frankly he did nothing wrong. He should’nt be attacked by Lebron fans just to be defensive about the truth. I mean, if we really ask ourselves, is Lebron overrated or just normal? Come on guys, face reality! .
