Lee and Odom not right for Portland Trail Blazers

July 05 09

There’s nothing ‘Rip City’ can do, but move on.

Fair or not, Hedo Turkoglu reneged on a verbal agreement to join the Portland Trail Blazers and inked a five-year, $53 million contract with the Toronto Raptors. Apparently, the Turkish swing’s family preferred big and multi-cultural Toronto to small and beautiful Portland.

What know?

Well, rumours have the Blazers eyeing New York post David Lee and Los Angeles three-man Lamar Odom. Lee is a restricted free agent, giving the Knicks the right to match any offer he receives, while Odom is an unrestricted free agent.

Lee and Odom are fine players and people. Both could conceivably work in Oregon or with any other NBA team for that matter. But both could also be pulling a quasi-Turkoglu –using very public negotiations with Portland to squeeze money and term out of the Knicks and Lakers.

Lee wants to return to ‘The Big Apple’. In New York, he got love from the fans in Madison Square Gardens and developed close friendships with teammates. Still, GM Donnie Walsh won’t overpay his double-double machine because NBA clubs have leverage on restricted free agents and he must preserve cap space for the summer of 2010.

Then there’s Odom’s situation. He’ll discount his $10 million salary to stay with the Lakers. And the Lakers will pay the luxury tax to keep him. So both player and team are interested in extending their relationship. Sounds simple enough, right?

Not so fast. The versatile forward, at best, wants to take a $1-2 million cut, while the club was hoping for a half-off-sale near the Mid Level Exception. As a result, Odom and the purple-and-gold have reached an impasse.

Enter vulnerable Portland. And their significant cap space.

After the Turkoglu debacle, GM Kevin Pritchard has extra motivation to sign a big-name like Lee and Odom. This is dangerous. Neither considers the Blazers their first choice and, worst of all, both would be paid rather handsomely to serve as effective platoon players.

Is Lee worth ten million dollars a season splitting minutes with LaMarcus Aldridge, Greg Oden, and Joel Przybilla? And does Odom deserve a similar wage when he’ll rotate in with several young players?

Portland must move on from Turkoglu. Lee and Odom, while solid players, aren’t the answer for a club looking to take the next step.

Is Lee the answer for Portland? How about Odom? Get at us in the comment box below and come back to HoopsVibe The Blog for further NBA tidbits. Photo courtesy of PDX Pipeline.

The whole team for the past two years has hated odom. I guarantee he’s not coming to portland. He almost ended roys career and showed no remorse what so ever. Then the next season ariza did the same thing to rudy and odom came off the bench to confront the blazers. He’s a thug and a dirty player and would only come to portland for the money. He doesn’t fit the blazers mentality. .

I’m a knicks fan and like Lee.. But he is not a low post scorer. He can score on the high pick and roll, and on put backs. He can’t block a shot, and sacrifices taking charges so he is in position to rebound. He also is pretty much at his peak. He may get craftier, but he will also get less athletic over the next 6 years. Odom is a much better fit in Portland, can play the 3 where they need some help, and brings championship experience and versatility.Portland also does need to use their money to some extent. B/c they have bird rights on Aldridge and Roy, they can spend 8-10 mill this year and also sign those two next year. By next year, that 8-10 m will only be the midlevel. OF course, it should be on Odom, or Andre Miller. .

I think Lee is a proven rebounder scorer and all out hustle player. He is a baby just getting into his prime. The most popular player in NY because he produces. Joining Adridge, Oden, Pryzbilla they would have the most potent 4, 5 combination in the NBA. I love Joel but Lee would be an upgrade cause he is just as tough inside and he is a low post scorer. I’d take a chance and go for Lee. He has terrific potential. .

Turk can’t ink anything until July 8, so right now it’s just another "verbal agreement". It would be funny if the Magic changed their minds and decided to offer him more to come back. .

The issue is that Portland is under the Salary Cap this year only (the Blazers will need to extend BRoy and LA later this year which will take them off Rookie scale). If they do not spend this money, they will not have anything but a mid-level exception for many years to come. KP wants another asset and has to make a move if for no other reason than to have someone to trade later. Look for some more complicated sign + trade deals and maybe Shawn Marion as a FA. .

Don’t push it. Do not make it happen, let it happen. Go with the flow. Go what is meant to be. .

Don’s got good points, the Blazers don’t need a whole lot. They need a vet to take some pressure off of Roy, and add experience to a NO experience team. I think Andre Miller would be perfect for this team. He is so crafty and is a very underrated leader. Because he isn’t the greatest shooter, it might be smart to add one more... however Webster will probably play that role, which works out perfect. The rest of the team just needs a little more time to develop. .

I agree with the author. Neither Lee nor Odom would be the perfect fit in Portland. Lee wouldn’t work very well at all. Odom would work better if moved to SF, but it seems like more of a patch than a solution. Portland should do one of 4 things at this point. 1) If Webster really is going to be healthy this season (and I believe Portland already has a pretty good idea about how his foot will be) AND if Bayless is the long term PG answer, go ahead and sign Miller for 3 years. Webster and Roy will be the distance shooters, while Miller and Roy become the slashers. Add a backup PF unless Pendregraph shows big promise early. 2) Hinrich could improve our defense, but his contract is so big for what he brings. I have mixed feelings. 3) Do nothing at all, with the possible exception of the PF situation mentioned above.. With an improving Oden and Bayless, and getting Webster back, this team should be much better.4) Trade with a team who’s looking to reduce overhead. Indiana (Granger) and New Jersey (Harris) could fit nicely, but seem to be more of the untradeable players. But pick your player and go for it.We don’t need ten million dollar band-aids to improve this team. .

Odom could start at small forward for Portland right away and do well in their system. Then they could use a combination of Outlaw, Webster, Rudy, Batum, Blake and/or Bayless to put together a trade for a starting-quality point guard. Of course, this could be one of those moves that looks better on NBA Live... .

Odom may be good for Portland, however he may cost more than he is worth. Lee could be used a sign and trade deal with another team for the Blazers to get the talent that they want. .
