Living With The Curse: The L.A. Lakers’ Options For Kwame Brown

December 29 07
He’s a human curse-a living, breathing voodoo doll just without pins. My friend’s opinion of L.A. Laker Kwame Brown is an exaggeration, but behind every overstatement is an element of truth.

Investing in Brown is costly; career-wrecking, in fact. Drafting the seven-footer first overall in 2001 destroyed Michael Jordan’s reputation as an executive, while Mitch Kupchak never lived down trading All-Star Caron Butler for the lumbering post.

His return from injury has sparked much speculation about his long-term future with the purple-and-gold. Most important: will Brown’s expectation of regular minutes impact Andrew Bynum‘s rapid development from prospect to star?

The Lakers have three options:
  • Option 1) The Showcase: Brown, because of his expiring contract, has trade value. Increased playing time could set-up a deadline deal; after all, every team has interest in his 9 million dollar salary coming off their books this summer.
  • Option 2) Platoon Until Summer: Brown can come off-the-bench for the next five months, then the Lakers can let him sign with another team and use the cap space.
  • Option 3) Keep Him: The Lakers may still have faith in Brown’s tremendous physical gifts. If so, they should use the next few months to establish a fair value and re-sign him at an affordable wage. Could a Bynum-Brown combo work long-term?
The Lakers shouldn’t feel rushed into making a decision. Without Brown, they’ve jumped out to a surprising 19-10 record. Whatever they do will only enhance their promising season.

What should the Lakers do with Brown: trade him, let him sign elsewhere, or develop him? Get at us in the comment box or drop us a line in our fan forum. Click here to read and subscribe to Oly Sandor’s NBA Blog.

many people want shaq to come in lakers.IT IS NOT HAPPENING!!!!!!!!!!!!Dont u remember that shaq wanted to leave the lakers because of Kobe.so if u say shaq is going to play for the la.lakers u are seriously wrong.i dont have anything against Shaq but he will finish his career with the heat.plus where is Bynum going to goShaq coming willget him even more nervous. The people he is most afraid but okay with are Shaq and Kobe.So thwill throw him of his groove. .

Tanvir you have no idea mate what Brown does is stupid moves that are low percentage shots he never attacks the rim when he does he gets contact or makes the play. he shoots under .500 from the line and thats why his point total is so low .

Antoine Walker averages more points and rebounds per game than anyone on the Lakers bench. Is he worth 9 mil per year? No way. Is he past his prime? Yes, way past it. Can he offer the Lakers more than Kwame? Yes, he isn’t on the DL all year and brings championship experience. Kwame is garbage at this point...worth no more than an expiring contract. .

and trenta when Kwame attacks the rim what happens??he sometimes dunks it but he gets it rejected or he misses or he passes it up....HE IS A BIG MAN!!!!WHEN U R A BIG MAN YOU ATACK not pa-------it up! they let him attack.IN utah game he gets ball and losses it odom gives it 2 him and he passes it 2 odomwhen he has 2 men on him.odom gets the ball rejected so i say not to keep him.he will never develop.he had 5 going to 6 years.michael Jordan being an executive was over because for the 1 pick was Kwame Brown.u got 2 admit that was messed up.every or mostly all number 1 picks are great.but kwame... .

but u dont understand something odom is asking for 2 much$$$ even though he is playing nice averaging 16ppg 10rebouns and 50% from field.if they see a power forward that is allstar material then they can get him.or any other player. They’ll have more money.Mitch Kupchak didnt get Kevin Garnett because of the salary cap. They didnt get Allen Iverson because of the salary cap.Odom is just freaking asking for to much for how he plays.5 or 6 games he plays awesome but the other games he plays crappy.i know that that he is becoming a second option but come on they keep him and a nother player will get out of the lakers reach .

no odom needs to stay looks like he’s finally becoming that second option he’s been playing great these last 5 games about 16 ppg i think 50% fg and 42% 3pg and he’s recorded a double double in 4 straight games. .

i say trade him for a all around power-forward that can come of bench for odom he gonna get traded next year because he asking for to much $$$$$$$ !!!!!!!!. lakers have already 2 centers so why have Kwame Brown????? trade him and odom for a nice powarforward and/or a center if the Lakers need the center. just look how lakers are playing without the retard kwame Brown they have a great record .

why not trade kwame brown and another player for Andre Miller? The sixers could use the expiring contract and miller would fit well on the lakers squad. .

Kwame has trade value, but I doubt Kupchak would make a blockbuster deal with the way the team is playing now.Josh Smith for Kwame Brown is a joke. The Ron Artest rumors are fallacies. Why O’Neal would be welcome with the Lakers is beyond me, considering hia pay in Miami as of late is remeniscent of that of Brown. Fact is, neither of these trades are plausible. The person who said Walker was a sparkplug should smack himself; I would rather keep Kwame if given that option. What’s going to happen is that Kwame will stay with the team, the Lakers will offer him a mdium sized contract, and he will decline and sign with another unlucky squad. .

There’s some serious dreaming going on with these trade proposals people. I like the Antoine Walker one the best. Spark plug? I think not. Butt-plug more like. Lol .
