Memphis should’ve passed on Zach Randolph and The Hoop Family

July 19 09

This is a warning for the city of Memphis and the state of Tennessee: Zach Randolph and ‘The Hoop Family’ are coming.

A few weeks ago, the Memphis Grizzlies acquired the power forward from the Los Angeles Clippers for Quentin Richardson. This wasn’t a straight one-for-one deal. Along with Z-Bo’s 20 points per night, the club and city gained the exclusive rights to his entourage.

Let me explain. Randolph travels with his boys from his hometown of Marion, Indiana. All twelve of them. They’re a package. This group, who dubbed themselves ‘The Hoop Family’, have had numerous run-ins with the law.

Over the years, there were sexual assault accusations, allegations of drug abuse, driving under the influence charges, drag racing citations, fights with teammates, and Randolph’s brother was convicted of shooting three men.

To be fair, he has supporters like Michigan State coach Tom Izzo. They maintain Randolph is a good guy, who can’t turn his back on old friends. They may be right. Still, for several reasons this move won’t work.

Even the Clippers realized Randolph and blue-chip talent, like first overall pick Blake Griffin, aren’t a good mix, so they found a taker/sucker in the Grizzlies. Of course, Memphis has youngsters Mike Connelly, Marc Gasol, Rudy Gay, O.J. Mayo, and Hasheem Thabeet. These players are impressionable and, fair or not, shouldn’t be around the former Jail Blazer.

The organization’s long-term plan clashes with his short-term plan. Gasol and Thabeet need heavy minutes to develop, while Randolph also needs steady burn to pad his stats for his next contract. Something will eventually give. And the southpaw post won’t be happy sacrificing playing time for others.

Speaking of contracts, Randolph is due $33 million over the next two seasons. Memphis, even with their financial flexibility, is a struggling market. The economy is bad, the salary cap is declining, and fans aren’t turning up, so why take on such a big-ticket?

Well, they do need publicity. In a state where football and college basketball rule, fans are at least discussing the Randolph trade. Memphis, like Portland, is a small market and the four-man’s every move will likely make front page headlines.

The Grizzlies took a risk acquiring Randolph and The Hoop Family. Unfortunately, this combination seems a stretch and could be disastrous.

Why should a team or city for that matter have to accept inappropriate behavior off the court antics for a few points and rebounds every game. What does this say about our community? or city? Grow up and leave the leaches a.k.a. "hoop family" where you found them- broke and in mayberry! .

I just don’t understand why people have to slam others . we all know Zach is a greaat player, & we all should give him a chance without all the slams. We all have skeleton or two in our closents. The past should stay in past & lets all move forward one daay at a time & see what happens. .

I thought it was a bit strange, considering; Memphis took Thebeet when the team had Gasol; who performed admirably last season. Maybe Zach will be moved at some point, he does give Memphis a steady low post scorer; something the team really need to help out Gasol; Thebeet don’t have a offensive skill set. .

I can’t believe Randolph has supporters. These are not personal attacks, but rather things and events that happened!!! .

I THINK ITS A BIG GAMBLE FOR MEMPHIS, BUT GIVEN THE CHANCE HE WOULD PROBABLY HELP THIS TEAM IN SCORING AND REBOUNDING. THEY NEED INSIDE SCORING WHICH GASOL AND THABEET ARE LACKING. LAST YEAR THEY ACQUIRED RUSTED PLAYER LIKE D-MILES AND COMPARING HIM WITH ZACH, HE’S DEFINITELY THE MUCH BETTER PLAYER. I THINK IT’S A GOOD DECISION FOR THE ORGANIZATION, AND THEY MIGHT HAVE A BETTER WINNING SEASON THIS YEAR.. AND ABOUT HIS FAMILY AND FRIENDS. WELL, ITS A DIFFERENT STORY... .

i’m from marion, and actually grew up with Z-Bo. And i have to agree this is a bad move for both Z-Bo and the Grizzlies. Whenever Zach has free time he goes to hang out in Memphis, and now that he will be playing there this definitely a recipe for disaster. I absolutely hope for the best, but with the "Hoop Family" around i dont see the best happening. .

I just don’t see the need for these personal attacks. If you don’t like Zach Randolph as a player that is fine. If you think they will win less games now they have him that is fine. But there’s no need to get all gleeful with the personal attacks as if you’re taking revenge on someone who beat up your little brother. .

Great read Oly. More negative press to go along with Z-Bo. It’s also been reported that Randolph sometimes shows up to shoot-arounds with alcohol on his breath. Definitely setting a great example for the young ones. .

The Grizz are 3 years away from any kind of real chance at the playoffs. I don’t think it’s that bad of a move. Don’t get me wrong, I hate the way Z-Bo plays. But he is an upgrade for this team, and instead of just developing for the next 3-4 years, let’s throw a stat-ful veteran in the mix and see if something out of the ordinary happens. If nothing else, they will trade him for next to nothing in the offseason... which is about what they paid for him. .
