Miami Heat Already Have Third Star To Complement Shaquille O’Neal & Dwyane Wade?

August 07 07

The South Florida Sentinel reports on the Heat’s failure to find a third star:

Davie Dwyane Wade knows there is a paradox at work in the Heat’s desire to help him.

The Heat hasn’t met its goal of acquiring a proven third scorer to lessen the burden on Wade, and it doesn’t appear that will happen. Yet it’s the burden of Wade’s contract extension, which starts in the fall, that makes it difficult to get him major help under the NBA’s salary system.

Wade ($12.5 million) and Shaquille O’Neal ($20 million) take up a huge chunk of the Heat’s payroll. Jason Williams ($8.9 million) and Antoine Walker ($8.3 million) account for most of the rest.

My Quick Take:  The San Antonio Spurs proved three stars are better than two. Tim Duncan, Manu Ginobili, and Tony Parker showed that balanced teams win NBA Titles.

The Spurs victory, combined with the Wolves and Lakers’ struggles, killed the old idea that one or two mega-stars is enough to win. Trios are the new rage. And the Celtics and Rockets spent the summer copying the Spurs’ three-star system.

This brings us to the Heat. They won the 2006 NBA Title with two superstars, Shaquille O’Neal and Dwyane Wade, and a rotating third star. Last year, O’Neal and Wade were hurt and the third star disappeared. End result: they got swept in the opening round of the playoffs.

Miami has spent the summer chasing free agents to fill the third scorer role. But South Beach has little to offer due to their salary cap position, so free agents have opted for richer paydays with other teams.

My advice: the Heat should re-examine what they already have on the roster. Two or three players are legitimate third star candidates:

  • Udonis Halsem can serve as a Horace Grant type of blending player. He can easily average double-figure points and rebounds. Maybe even fifteen points a game with his work ethic.
  • Antoine Walker was brought-in to be that third star. He’s been an all-star. He’s even been The Guy on some competitive Celtic squads. But the shoulder-shimmy has to play like a third star on a night-in, night-out basis.
  • Forget that White Chocolate nonsense. Forget that clip of Jason Williams flipping on a reporter in Memphis. He’s led the NBA in assists to turnovers; he even earned the respect of old school sideline boss Hubie Brown. Williams, if healthy, is a solid, top-ten point guard.

The Heat should re-consider what they already have on the roster. They could be overlooking the obvious answer to their third star-woes.

you guys complain of the heat not making moves and that they should be rebuilding. yet you suggest trading guys like dorrell or simien. those are two guys right there that may be the heat’s future. dorrell is still extremely young and showed some promise last season and simien can be a solid role player. right now all the heat need is a proven 3rd option scorer no need to completely rebuild. in my opinion even though pietrus isn’t the smartest player he’d be a good addition. because i feel it’s dorrell’s time to start getting more minutes and pietrus is good for about 20-25 minutes a night so the two of them can split. plus pietrus wouldn’t cost an arm and a leg and he gives us youth, length, athleticism and he’s better offensively then posey. he can also play sg which would be great for wade. i honestly wouldn’t mind keeping posey though, he’s great defensively and plays his heart out every night. can easily split minutes between him and dorrell, throw posey in as a defensive specialist and dorrell as a scoring option. also dont sleep on shaq...i have my doubts too but i also know this mans going to come back this year with a vengeance. with all this tim duncan talk and being more dominant he’s going to hopefully be motivated. .

I have already made my mind up that I am not going to any Heat games this upcoming season. The Heat franchise know what they have to do in order to be successful, but seem unwilling to do so. The "Dyanamic Duo" cannot cut it alone. WE NEED MORE TALENT! And everytime a decent player from another team comes up for trade the Heat do nothing. The Heat need to ditch Walker and Williams and get some new talent. If this is going to be a rebuilding season for them, then lets make it happen. .

i didn’t say old, i said past prime... Walker isn’t going back to his 20 pt, 8 reb all-star form any time soon. he may be good for 12 and 5, but his natural position is PF, so getting maximum production out of him requires sacrifices from Haslem and vice-versa. .

I like that suggestion of the heat trading with the clips...thats an amazing trade...cassell has a few years left..and by the time shaqs contract is done and he retires...miami will have enough money to go after a great point and or center .

Walker isn’t old. I think the author is trying to say that the Heat need to get more out of what they already have...their other options have been exhausted!!!! .

LOL. hey Oly, what are u smoking? i agree with your assessment of Haslem, but Walker and Williams? no way. both of them are past prime and aren’t likely to be returning to their previous all-star form any time soon. Walker is inconsistent and a serious liability on defense.Williams is slow and also a liability on defense. besides, its not really a 3rd option the Heat need, but a SECOND option. Shaq is going to struggle to be a 15 and 7 guy this year... he’s teetering on the brink of obsolesence and is increasingly prone to drop a single digit scoring game any night of the week. Shaq is a solid role player, takes up space in the paint and draws alot of looks from opposing defenses, but he isnt a 2nd option scorer anymore. the Heat need a true 2nd option on offense that can consistently put up 18-20 ppg on a nightly basis. .

The heat should trade with the clippers. The clips need to replace a point guard and help up front. The heat need a scorer and a slasher. The only reasonable trade would be J. will, Walker and Simien to the Clips for Maggette, cassel,Ross and A williams. It works out w? Brand out you can slide Walker in and Maggete would be a great fit for the heat.. .
