Mike Bibby, not Paul Millsap, would have been perfect for Portland Trail Blazers

July 11 09

Breaking NBA news mixed with analysis ...

Their News: "The Portland Trail Blazers elected Friday not to wait on trade possibilities, deciding instead to offer Utah Jazz restricted free agent Paul Millsap a four-year contract worth $32 million, according to sources with knowledge of the Blazers’ plans.

The Jazz, meanwhile, are expected to continue their push to trade Carlos Boozer in response, with the intent of creating sufficient distance from the luxury-tax line to enable Utah to match the Millsap offer." (Marc Stein, ESPN.com)

Our Quick Analysis: He’s not the missing piece. Not for $8 million per season.

There’s much to like about versatile forward Paul Millsap. The same goes for the Portland Trail Blazers, who seem determined to take the next step in 2010 -even if improving means using their cap space to sign free agents in a declining economy.

But overpaying a first-forward-off-the-bench won’t help ‘Rip City’ go from a good to great team.

For years, GM Kevin Pritchard has been hoarding cap space. The goal was simple: create the financial flexibility to sign an established pro to complement LaMarcus Aldridge, Brandon Roy, and the other young talent in Oregon. To achieve this end, players were bought-out, traded, and encouraged, sometimes through unconventional means, to retire.

But Millsap, a strong player, can’t push the Blazers over the edge when backing-up Aldridge and Greg Oden. Simply put, the minutes aren’t there for him to be a difference- maker. Sliding to small forward is a possibility, but Rudy Fernandez, Martell Webster, and Travis Outlaw also need playing time.

Instead of offering a restricted free agent like Millsap $32 million, Portland should be looking to upgrade at point guard. To be fair, rumors have linked the club to free agent Andre Miller and Kirk Hinrich via a three-team trade with Chicago and Utah.

Here’s a thought: did the Blazers bother pursuing Mike Bibby before he signed a very reasonable three-year, $18 million pact to stay in Atlanta? The veteran, for a couple of reasons, would have been perfect.

His skill-set would have been a match. While not a great passer, Bibby has always managed to set the table for teammates. But the Arizona grad is the NBA’s best shooting point guard, so he would have punished opponents for helping on Roy and also would have got his share of looks off backcuts and pick-and-rolls.

Best of all, Bibby has experience. With Sacramento, he suited up in do-or-die game sevens and sank clutch buzzer-beaters. Like the Blazers, his old Kings teams faced intense pressure to break through in a tough Western Conference. No situation would have faced him.

Millsap and Portland don’t seem a fit. Hopefully, the Jazz match the offer sheet and the Blazers can keep searching for that elusive missing piece.

I do not agree. Steve Blake and Bibby had just about the same stats except for Bibby’s three extra ppg average. The role of a PG is not to score. Blake is why Aldridge and Roy are so dominant. He runs the floor at a quick pace and looks for the pass. .

i think this signing is pointless and bad for millsaps career....there are plenty of shitty PF’s in this league he could of went to a team and started at PF and with more mins and experince turned into a maybe a teams 2nd option or maybe a star...going to portalnd backing up alridade isn’t going to get him anywhere...they need to upgrade the SF postion or even get a lil better pg and blake would be a good bench pg for 15 to 20 min just my thoughts .

Blake is a career sub, The Blazers need a starting point guard! Why would they sign Milsap when he is a power foward/center at best! He wont transition to the three and he wont be content playing behind Lamarcus. They need to go after Ramon Sessions I seen him play a couple times this year he is a killer, Quick as lighting and he can shoot the lights out! Make a move Portland damn atleast get Nate robinson Roy former teamate! .

Hi all, thanks for your feedback and comments. I’m not sure if I’d call Bibby a ball-dominating point guard. He always fit with great players: Webber, Hedo, Vlade and Peja in Sacramento and Joe Johnson flourished last year in Atlanta. Remember, much of the Kings’ offence centered around C-Webb and Vlade in the high-post. What he would have offered Portland is a shooting point guard who can punish teams for doubling Roy and Aldridge. Also, he’s a vet, something the Trail Blazers needed. Just thoughts ... thanks for commenting. Feel free to respond. .

Bibby and Millsap are not the answer. Instead, the best player they could pursue at this time is no other than Lakers’ Lamar Odom. His experience through the playoffs and skillsets are perfect for Portland. The all-round player can help Portland push the offense by his ability to create offensive with/without the ball. This would help young guards like Roy and Bayless focus more on scoring. LO can also help Portland crash the board with Oden and Aldridge. Not only that, Odom’s versatility can create a new offensive lineup that can disrupt other team’s defense. The lack of great small forward can be voided by signing Lamar Odom instead of other power forward Millsap who is going to overlap Aldridge’s minutes .

We don’t gain anything with Bibby over Blake, in fact we lose chemistry, This team already has a good point guard crew - one that is gaining valuable experience as time goes on. Blake now is a veteran experienced point guard to continues to improve every year. The Blazers need a quality quick bruizing forward who can score the ball and take up space in the middle. Milsap is that guy and at this price it’s a steal. JP knows what he’s doing and a year from now everyone else will too. But after Milsap - let this team alone. .
