Must be the Money

May 10 08

This is a special feature from guest blogger Christopher Sells.

Well, that didn’t take long.

Mike D’Antoni has reportedly chosen the money and will be the next coach of the New York Knicks. The good news is that he can’t do any worse than Isiah Thomas. The bad news is that the team he will have at his disposal is hardly capable of executing his game plan.

D’Antoni will go from Steve Nash to Stephon Marbury. From Shaquille O’Neal to Eddy Curry. From Amare Stoudemire to Zach Randolph. And, probably, from 55 wins to maybe 30, if the season is a success. But at least he’ll be getting paid handsomely to do it. The numbers that are being thrown around will make him the league third-highest paid coach, behind championship machines Phil Jackson and Gregg Popovich.

If you’re a Knick fan, you should certainly be happy. D’Antoni was probably the best coach on the market. However, the team’s payroll and the players attached to it will make it difficult to do any sort of maneuvering right away.

Well, Knick fans, how do you feel? Is this the right move? Was there someone better?

"Kill Zeke" HA! nice, it’s not enough that they forbid him to speak to the players, let’s stone him, is that what you’re looking for, man? .

It’s easy for a fan to say taking the money is a sell out, but coaches make less that players and this contract sets him and his family for his remaining years. Why wouldn’t he take financial security. And not to mention, some people like a challenge, not just the shortcut. If he can turn this around, he elevates himself to one of the league’s elite coaches. .

Paxon was a little passive with D’Antoni. I think D’Antoni had such a big ego problem that Paxon "considered" hiring an assistant defense coach to complement D’Antoni, and D’Antoni thought it was a sign of "mistrust" (just like Kerr), and sided with New York. I think D’Antoni should’ve at least WAITED for John Paxon to offer him a contract........... .

A hardcore Knicks fan here. D’Antoni is certainly the best coach available. But I’m still not satisfied. I’ll be satisfied only when they kill Zeke .

Bulls fan here. Thanks for not pulling the trigger again Pax!And thanks for selling out D’Antoni, we want a coach who cares about winning though, not just then money. Have fun getting ur reputation destroyed and losing your dignity just like every other New York coach for the last 5 years! .
