Why: Today’s pick is mostly about one match-up: Detroit’s Tayshaun Prince against Seattle rookie Kevin Durant. Prince- with his long arms, leaping ability, and quickness- is one of the NBA’s best defenders. In theory, he possesses the physical tools to contain Durant in the post and on the perimeter. The second overall pick in the 2007 Draft could be in for a tough night. But Durant is averaging 23 points per game, so I fully expect him to meet the challenge of going up against Prince. Are we sleeping on Detroit? The methodical Pistons once again look solid, but the chatter out east has mostly focused on the revamped Celtics, Knicks, and Magic.* * * * * This is somewhat fair. But Motown still has the NBA’s best starting unit and they also upgraded their bench this summer. However, Detroit sometimes get complacent and bored during key points of the season-like last year’s playoff series against Cleveland. Until the Pistons show they can stay focused, the Celtics will remain the sexy and smart pick to win the Eastern Conference. Can Prince guard Durant? How good are the Pistons?
