NBA stars who must bounce back in 2010 (#10-6): Calderon, Dunleavy, Ginobili, Marion, and Brand

September 23 09
HoopsVibe The Blog has another basketball related list for fans to weigh-in on. We call it ’Listed’ …

Like stocks and real estate, their play fell off in 2009.

Fortunately, the coming season presents a chance at one thing: redemption. Expectations can be met. Salaries can be justified. Reputations can be saved. And just like investors and homeowners, fans are hoping to once again become bullish on their favourite players.

With training camps set to open shortly, HoopsVibe The Blog has ten players in desperate need of a bounce back campaign in 2010. Today is ten through six. Tomorrow (Thursday) is five through one, so check back for the rest of this piece in a day. As always, read the post, form thoughts, and get at us in the comment box below.

#10) Jose Calderon …

Two years ago, he could do no wrong. The Spaniard chased T.J. Ford out of Canada, won Toronto’s starting point guard spot, signed a $45 million multi-year contract, and looked to be on the verge of stardom.

Then it all went Peter Tong. It started with that God awful picture with the Spanish national team. Once in Toronto, Calderon couldn’t handle starter minutes, got hurt, and, unlike Stella, never got his groove back.

Much has been made of the Raptors’ off-season overhaul. This is fair. However, ‘The Dinos’ don’t qualify for the playoffs in 2010 unless Calderon finds to his old form.

#9) Mike Dunleavy, Jr.

Occasionally, Dunleavy has shown enough to justify being handed the keys to both the Golden State Warriors and Indiana Pacers. Most of the time, due to either injuries or inconsistency, he has been a disappointment.

Next season, everything must fall into sync. The Pacers, who have been losing money hand over fist, need Dunleavy and Danny Granger to develop into a top duo and help the club become relevant again in Indianapolis.

#8) Manu Ginobili …

When their super-sub is healthy and performing, the San Antonio Spurs are a top squad in the ultra competitive Western Conference. When their super-sub is injured or not performing, they’re remarkably vulnerable.

Last season, it was the latter. Still, credit small market San Antonio for spending on salaries when most teams are conserving cash. But Richard Jefferson, and his 20 million dollar per annum contract, will be a waste if the Argentine has another sub par year.

Simply put, Ginobili has to create mismatches against other second units for the Spurs to have any shot at another championship.

#7) Shawn Marion …

Not long ago, The Matrix was considered an MVP candidate. And those that didn’t see him as an upper-echelon player had no choice but to admit his athleticism was a key for ‘Seven Seconds To Shoot‘.

However, somebody started whispering in Marion’s ear that the grass could be greener if he left ‘The Desert‘. So, he foolishly requested a trade and got stuck in two situations that weren‘t a match for his very specific skill-set: Miami and Toronto.

Now, with Jason Kidd and Dirk Nowitzki as his running mates, Marion is trying to re-establish his career in Dallas.

#6) Elton Brand …

After inking a controversial max deal with the Philadelphia 76ers in July of 2008, Brand got hurt and missed most of the season. Injuries weren’t his biggest problem, though. The stocky post excels in a half court game and, when healthy, seemed utterly out of sync with the run-and-gun 76ers.

Brand has played 37 games in the past two years and 2007 was a disappointment. He is now at a crossroad. This season will determine if Brand regains his old MVP calibre form (2006) or continues to slide.

I think Manu is the only player with any championship possibilities. If Marion plays well, Dallas could back into the elite, but until they replace Dampier... they will never win it all. Calderon needs to play well, but with all of the Raptors upgrades he shouldn’t have as much pressure on him, so it should be easy for him. Dunleavy seems irrelevant. And Brand is just in a wierd spot, I agree that the 76ers should’ve passed on him. I don’t think they know how to utilize him, and with the PG spot in the air, I think he will be the last person to benefit from that change. .

PC definitely agree, Mo seriously needs to find consistency. He had a pretty strong regular season, but totally fizzled in the playoffs when LBJ needed serious help. If the Cavs have ANY hope of winning the ’ship they need Mo firing on all cylinders. Yes they got Shaq, Anthony Parker, etc. But Mo i think is the key, the dude put up 44 pts in one game last season. He’s more than capable. So I guess I’m talking in terms of postseason, he doesnt necessarily need to improve in the season but the post season is an absolute must or the King and his subjects wont be having their ring. .

Well put. José was pretty disappointing for me last year, and I know that one of the writers on this had him tipped for an all NBA second team. Obviously, Mo Williams would want to improve his off season game, thats one of my thoughts. And as one of the people said down there, personally i dont think Rasheed needs too much of an improvement, he’s going to be on a team where he is the 5th best player, and he’s a hell of a 5th best player. What about VC needing to improve? .

I dig Jose’s game, I think he’ll come back fine. Before the injury, he was way more aggressive on offense and not nearly as pylon-esque on D. Out of these guys, Brand is probably the most important. He should be the best player on his team. .

Hi G-Man and Samantha ... Thanks for commenting, even if you disagreed which is fine.

Look I like Calderon’s game. And sure, injuries were an issue all year and sure, he finished strong.

But that proves my point: he hasn’t shown he can handle major minutes yet. And his best basketball came at season’s end when the Raps were all but out of the playoffs.

Furthermore, although he had a great assist-to-turnover ratio, part of me wanted him to be a little more assertive and risk-prone. Not all the time, just once in a while.I thought he was too conservative, at times in 2009.

Finally, Jack is very solid player. And perhaps his toughness and D is the answer. But bottom line: Toronto needs Calderon to be better and get back that star thing he had for long stretches in 2008. He was one of the best PGs in the NBA for long parts of 2008.

Again, I like Jose. He needs to step it up in 2010. I’m cheering for him and the Raps next year. Thanks for commenting. Feel free to respond and I’ll try to check in later in the day. .

re: "‘The Dinos’ don’t qualify for the playoffs in 2010 unless Calderon finds to his old form."The Raptors have insurance in Jack who won the starting PG position off TJ Ford last year. Calderon’s well-rested as well not partaking in summer games for the first time...Let’s go, Raps! .

Considering that Calderon didn’t start the season healthy, he wasn’t having trouble finding his groove before the injury because it happened at the Olympics. He finished the season healthy and was playing lights out at the end of the season (as were the Raps). And even though he was playing on one leg for most of the season he still shot for great percentages, barely turned the ball over and set an NBA free throw record. I mean, what a scrub......finds (to) his old form. .

Excellent post Oly, all 5 of those guys are definitely players that need to have turn around years to justify those contracts, ESPECIALLY Elton Brand. I never did like the 6ers signing him, he’s a sore thumb if you will; he just doesn’t fit there. I also agree with eallen and no name, Sheed and Monta Ellis both need to have turn around seasons; Ellis so he can prove he’s worth the contract and Sheed to prove he can help Boston. .

Rasheed Wallace is definately a player that needs to regain his old form. The Celtics are banking on him to be an X factor the same way he was with Detroit back in 04. .
