New Jersey Nets & L.A. Lakers Should Re-visit Jason Kidd-Andrew Bynum Trade

December 03 07

The Newark Star Ledger reports on the Nets turning down Jason Kidd’s request for a contract extension:

The Nets had turned down Kidd’s appeal for a contract extension just days before he made his bleak assertion about the team’s future, according to three people close to the point guard who requested anonymity so as not to damage his relationship with the team.

The 13th-year pro, one of the great players of his generation, makes $19.7 million this season and $21.4 million next year, the final year of his deal, which makes him eligible for a one-year extension for the 2009-10 season — or a two-year extension, if he waits until this summer.

My Quick Take: New Jersey owner Bruce Ratner rolls deep. The billionaire has shown Vince Carter and Richard Jefferson the money, signing his star wings to max contracts.

But the buck stops with Jason Kidd-literally.

Right now, the Nets have little interest in extending Kidd beyond 2010. New Jersey, like Seattle with Gary Payton, has reservations about committing big money to a veteran point guard.

That said, Kidd hasn’t aged and is still an elite table-setter. Unfortunately, it appears New Jersey’s big three have peaked and management is looking to make changes. Should the Nets call the Lakers and revisit last winter’s Kidd for Andrew Bynum deal?

Why New Jersey should deal Kidd for Bynum:

  • The Nets won’t win the east with their current squad, acquiring a youthful Bynum helps set-up the future in their new Brooklyn stadium.
  • The Nets already have two perimeter stars; Bynum solidifies their ozone sized-hole at center.

Why New Jersey shouldn’t deal Kidd for Bynum:

  • J-Kidd is a Hall of Fame point guard, who leads the club on and off-the-court. Trading him tarnishes his legacy and accomplishments with the Nets.
  • Kidd, because of his conditioning, could transcend his age and still dominate in his late thirties. There is no guarantee Bynum develops into an elite center.

Why L.A. should deal Bynum for Kidd:

  • Acquiring Kidd would end the speculation about Bryant’s future. Mamba would stay put in Hollywood. After all, Jackson is on board. A Hall of Fame one-guard is running the point. Why would Bryant leave?

Why L.A. shouldn’t deal Bynum for Kidd:

  • Bynum will be around for a decade after Kidd retires. And acquiring Kidd’s hefty contract isn’t easy for any team to assume, especially the Lakers who are already over the cap.

Verdict: New Jersey and L.A. should take another look at this trade. The Nets have maxed out their big three, while the Lakers need another superstar to ensure Bryant stays.

Ten months later, Kidd for Bynum still makes sense.

However, the All-Star probably remains in the swamps of Jersey until 2008. As the trade-line approaches, the Kidd rumors will heat up.

Whatever.... I can see lebron going to LA with a 22 yo bynum befor he goes to NJ with a 37 yo Kidd especially if kobe decides to opt out after next year (although i’d be pretty damn shocked if he did-to much $ left on the table) Bynum has just about played himself into untradeable status with the lakers with avraging a double double this season, held Howard to pedestrian #’s, while also getting 7 blocks that game, all the while being 2 yrs younger than Howard. Unless there is some serious young talent coming back to LA bynums going nowhere soon .

Just because Jay-Z is good friends with LeBron, doesn’t mean he’s gonna go over there douche bag .

Whoever wrote this is a complete moron. Bynum is one of the most untouchable players in the league. If the Lakers didn’t do it then, they won’t do it now. Bynum is averaging 11/10 and nearly 2 blocks in 25mpg. No way you deal that for a PG when you’d have to include Kwame as well. Do they expect Rambis to suit up at C? .

for the comment under me. How the hell do u know james is SERIOUSLY consdiering the nets. Where the hell did that come from. Nobody has mentionted that and in fact i think ur the first person who has even thought of lebron in a nets jersey. .

Both teams would be complete idiots to revisit that trade. a PG doesn’t put the Lakers anywhere close to getting over the hump, especially since they would have to trade their decent big men just to get the PG. The Nets would be idiots to give up Kidd. He has defined their entire franchise. He’s a reason why LBJ will heavily consider the Nets in 2010 .

The numbers don’t match. The Lakers would have to throw in some bad contracts like Kwame Brown, Radmonavich.....or throw in Odom and have the Nets throw in Sean Williams....if I’m the Nets I’d do this in a heartbeat. They have been going nowhere for the last few years and a first round playoff exit is all they can expect. For all Kidd’s greatness, he is slower since the knee surgery, and can’t shoot a lick, something everyone always overlooks. .

First of all, I feel stupid for commenting on a year old trade proposal. Move on already. The Lakers would be stupid to give up Bynum and the Nets would be stupid to give up Kidd. Kidd+Kobe+scrubs doesn’t win anything in the Western Conference and Kobe will just keep crying about how he doesn’t have any good (or even decent) big men on his team. Let Bynum develop. He will be a player. The Nets are actually a deeper team than the Lakers. Lakers should trade them Kobe. Kobe and Kidd plus whoever’s left on the Nets would be great. .

Yeah, but the Lakers by trading Bynum for Kidd would keep Bryant ... it’s a trade off that has to be done! The lesser of two evils .

Would the Trail Blazers trade Greg Oden for Jason Kidd? Ridiculous, right? Yet, people think the Lakers should trade Andrew Bynum who is only a few months older, three years more experienced and with two healthy knees. Who was the last barely-20 center to average a double double in the NBA? Dwight Howard. Bynum may not turn out to be Howard but if he even approximates Howard, how dumb will the Lakers feel? .

Something is certainly up with the Nets, not sure if Kidd goes, but something will happen and soon! .

I think that this trade would be great 4 L.A yet I think it won’t happen. Kidd is a great player no doubt & Bynum is considered to be an outstanding center. All you can hear is that he WILL develope...way I see it he’s been developing since draft night and for 3 years??he didn’t surprise me. I don’t know when this development is planning to explode. I’ve got nothing aggainst him maybe he will be a great center but if I was L.A i would pursue a trade like this .

Kidd is really old. He can only turn it on defensively if at all on the fourth quarter. They should send him to LA and pay part of his salary in exchange for Bynum. .

If they (aka the story-hungry media) starts revisiting stuff like this, it would seriously stink. I think the Kidd and Andrew Bynum thing is pathetic. Pathetic. The Nets should maybe look into trading Richard Jefferson or Vince Carter + other smaller pieces for Kobe, but that’s where it ends. .
