New Orleans Personal: Why Baron Davis Was an All-Star Snub

February 01 08

My AM Take: The business of the NBA often becomes personal. Players, coaches, executives, and owners don’t forget small and insignificant slights. Occasionally, entire cities hold grudges, too.

With this in mind, I wasn’t surprised Baron Davis didn’t get voted onto the Western Conference All-Star squad as a reserve. B-Diddy deserved the honor, but was likely ‘passed over’ by coaches because of his legacy with the New Orleans franchise three years ago.

Davis walked on the Hornets in the winter of 2005, demanding a trade. This year’s mid-season classic is in the Big Easy, so the table-setter’s 22 points and 8 assists per game mean little. His team, Golden State, is 28-19 in the highly competitive Western Conference, but that also means little.

Public relations matter. So Davis will conveniently spend All-Star weekend at home. Forget that he’s an entertaining player, who balls for the fan favorite Warriors. None of that matters in David Stern’s world.

To be fair, the west is stocked with quality point guards. Tony Parker, the NBA Finals MVP, was left off the roster. And Deron Williams will stay in Utah, too.

So this isn’t an Oliver Stone, single-gunman conspiracy against Davis, but his past was probably enough to tilt the scales against him.

Is this right? I’m not sure. I do know pissing somebody off in the NBA can be costly.

I HATE THE ALLSTAR RESERVES THIS YEAR. DAVID WEST, RICHARD HAMILTON, ANTAWN JAMISON AND TO A DEGREE JOE JOHNSON, CHANCEY BILLUPS AND CARON BUTLER, DONT REALLY DESERVE TO BE THERE.

THERE ARE PLAYERS DOING MUCHER BETTER THIS SEASON WHO ARE MUCH BETTER AT BEING FLASHY AND DUNKING, WHICH IS WHAT PEOPLE WANT TO SEE IN THE ALL STAR GAME.

B-DIDDY AND DERON WILLIAMS AND MARCUS CAMBY, CANT BELIEVE THEY DIDNT GET IT

JOSH SMITH CAN FLY HE SHOULDNT BEEN IN THERE TOO

davis is the no. 1 all star snub. next are tony parker, d-will, manu, you know there just a lot of great guards in the west. but b-diddy should have made it. he is next to nash and c. paul. .

Sure lets snumb steve nash for baron davis. i mean barons done so much for his team and everything. i mean steve nash is only averaging 17.4 pts and 11.8 assist. he is only the two time mvp. he is the only reason phoenix suns are half as good as they are.The phoenix suns are know as the most exciting team in basketball, only because of steve nash. But i see completly what you mean by putting baron davis over steve nash. It makes perfect sense............not .

baron is one of the best and most entertaining point guards in the nba, who contributes higely to his teams recent success. And after all, isnt the all-star game all about entertainment?Sure, we could watch steve nash throw up some sic ally-oop passes or score a swish from 3 point land, but baron could match that and throw down a power facial dunk on yao (while he is standing on shaq’s shoulders) to beat it. Baron davis = All Star. Do not argue if you think differently. You are wrong. .

the article isnt stupid, if you think about it, it does make some sense...sure, you can say the blazers could be the worst team in the league w/out roy, but maybe that would be the same with the warriors w/out davis...and roy is great, but baron is a better player and a better entertainer...and seeing as how coaches voted for this, it’s likely that b.scott, who is coaching the west this year, had a relatively big influence over who got in and who didn’t..and for those who don’t know, baron and b.scott have some tension/beef between them. .

stupid article you could say that for d-will. his team is doing good, and he is averaging 1 asst and 1 pt below cp3. who actually deserved to go, and brandon roy, if it wasnt for him the blazers would most likey be one of the worst in the west. baron is good dont get me wrong. but to single him out is dumb, like u said the west is deep, and all the coaches voted for this, that must mean they dislike playing against brandon roy and cp3 cause they make there team that much better. ALLstars do that. .
