New York would love ’White Chocolate’

August 01 09

Breaking NBA news mixed with analysis...

Our Very Quick Analysis: White Chocolate’s bag of tricks could soon be on display at basketball’s Mecca, the great Madison Square Garden.

Yes, after losing out on point guards Jason Kidd, Steve Nash, and Ramon Sessions, New York has turned its attention to acquiring Jason Williams. Today, Yahoo is reporting that the Knicks have claimed Mr. Behind-The-Back off waivers from the Los Angeles Clippers.

"The New York Knicks claimed point nguard Jason Williams off waivers Friday from the Los Angeles Clippers, according to a source with knowledge of the situation. The Knicks have until August 6th to negotiate a contract with the 10-year NBA veteran." (Marc J. Spears, Yahoo.com)

A few thoughts on this development:

  • J-Will, who retired shortly after signing with the Clippers last summer, would click with Mike D’Antoni. The Knicks’ sideline boss uses a wide-open system, which would encourage and nourish the veteran’s creativity and flair.
  • This isn’t all aesthetics. D’Antoni would also love Williams’ basketball IQ. Remember, the table-setter led the NBA in assists-to-turnover ratio, started on the 2006 world champion Heat, and won the trust of old school coach Hubie Brown.
  • Williams, at 33, has a couple of seasons left, especially after taking last year off to get healthy.  He could still handle significant minutes as a starter or provide a lift off the bench.
  • Nate Robinson, a restricted free agent, will likely re-sign with ‘The Five Burroughs’ in the next couple of weeks. Imagine the excitement of a Kryptonite and White Chocolate backcourt?

(Does it get any better than Williams and some classic Guns N’ Roses?)

Last year, fans missed Williams’ panache and smarts. Hopefully, a contract is worked out by the August 6th deadline and he returns to the game on its grandest stage in New York.

FOR THE RECORD. SHAQ WAS IN BAD SHAPE DURING THE TITLE RUN IN MIAMI. ALONZO MOURNING’S DEFENSE AND WADE’S OFFENSE WON THE TITLE. J WILL WOULD BE CUTE BUT HIS DECISION MAKING WILL DRIVE D’ ANTONI CRAZY. HE LEADS THE LEAGUE IN AST/TO WHEN THE COACH CALLS ALL THE FREAKING PLAYS. LET HIM RUN LOOSE AND YOU NEVER KNOW WHAT YOU WILL GET. I KNOW D ANTONI TORE HIS OFFICE APART WHEN HE HEARD NASH RE-UPPED WITH THE SUNS. .

When J will was with the Kings they were the Number 1 team in attendance. His style was breathtaking. When he arrived in Miami Riley did not let him play his game. He would give the ball off and run into the far corner. Wade and Shack were the 2 main men. He still threw some ally oops to shaq. If he is healthy and plays for a up tempo coach Ny York can be in for some special treats. The Kings were the talk of the NBa when he played with C WEB And PEJA. Pete Carill was also a big part of the picture. The Kings were the mostentertaining team over the last 10 yrs because of JWILL .

Ja was hurt most of the season with Miami when they won the Title. If he is healthy He will be the showman that he once was. Riley used to call every and did not let him play his game. He needs a coach that lets him run. Looking forward to seeing him again. He is a small Pistol Pete.If he was not completely healthy he probably would not come back. I cant wait .

@the anonymous poster — I know the guy’s history — obviously better than you do. "He was the starting PG on a title team." Yeah, so was BJ Armstrong. What does that prove? D-Wade and Shaq won that title, not White Chocolate."...his assist - to -turnover ration for the last 3 years he played was #1 in the league" I don’t know where you get your numbers from but no, it wasn’t. Just for giggles, the last full season he played was 07-08: WC: 307 AST 91 TOV = 3.37 CP3: 925 AST 217 TOV = 4.27 Not even close on the ratio and CP3 had 3x as many assists to boot. WC hasn’t averaged more than 6 AST per game since 03-04. More importantly, here are some more WC career numbers: FG% .396; PER 14.4; 1.6 FTA per game. I could go on and on, but why bother — he was always overrated thanks to the flashy passes. Now he’s overrated and about to turn 34 after almost two years off. In short, I might take him as a third PG — and that’s about it. Meanwhile there’s this 23 year old who averaged 7.5 AST, shot .445, 17.6 PER and 5.9 FTA per game last year. Maybe you’ve heard of him? Plays in Milwaukee but is an RFA... .

Hey count: he was the starting point guard on a title team, delivers the ball exactly where his teammates want it better than anyone, may actually be healthy now & his assist - to -turnover ration for the last 3 years he played was #1 in the league. .

I’ll errr...fourth that no. He’s going to be 34, hasn’t played in nearly two years, and has always taken way too many bad shots without getting to the stripe. He makes nice highlight reels with some flashy assists, but other than that he’s a pretty mediocre PG. Sessions is definitely NOT off the table yet. Why don’t they already have him? Because sign-and-trades on BYC players are ridiculously complex. See: http://009/7/30/969932/sessions-lee-sign-and-trade .

Hi Greg, If NY really wanted Sessions, they’d have him by now, right? I guess that is my take on the situation; nothing is official, though. Still, today a third team jumped in the running for Sessions and why would the Knicks claim J-Will if they truly had a shot or wanted Ramon. Still, something could happen. I just think if the Knicks really wanted Sessions, then he’d be there by now Thanks for commenting. .

Why do you say the Knicks have "lost out" on Ramon Sessions? I haven’t seen any news that he has been signed. .
