No laughingstock: Bibby, Crawford, and Johnson make Atlanta Hawks a contender

July 15 09

The league’s laughingstock could soon get a laugh in.

Most basketball fans think of the Atlanta Hawks as a running joke. This oddball, outpost franchise has always struggled on and off-court; with little direction from front office and ownership they’ve made poor personnel decisions and played in front of few fans at home.

After years of disappointment, heartbreak, and incompetence, the Atlanta Hawks are becoming respectable and then some. No more being the NBA’s Siberia. No more TMZ style squabbles amongst ownership and management. And no more ridiculous contracts like the Enron-inflated pact given to journeyman Jon Koncak.

The days of being a punch line on late-night television are over. These Hawks are coming off back-to-back playoff appearances and seem poised to take the next step in 2010.

Truth be told, the turnaround almost never happened. In the summer of 2005, some of the club’s former owners didn’t believe Joe Johnson was a franchise player and weren’t interested in signing the restricted free agent from Phoenix to a frontloaded, five-year contract worth $70 million.

In fact, the Atlanta Spirit LLC partnership went to court over Johnson and control of the club. Some owners wanted Johnson. Others did not. Thankfully, the 6-8 combo guard stayed in the ATL, regardless of what a few suits and their lawyers thought.

He’s Atlanta’s first franchise player since Dominique Wilkins. Unlike ‘The Human Highlight Film’, Johnson can do it all: score, rebound, pass, play and defend multiple positions. Best of all, he brought much-needed professionalism and a quiet confidence to the club.

Johnson leads an impressive backcourt. Somehow, the Hawks re-signed Mike Bibby for a very reasonable 3 years and $18 million. The veteran is the NBA’s best shooting point guard and is deadly on either pick-and-rolls and when moving off the ball.

When Johnson or Bibby need a rest, newly acquired Jamal Crawford will pull his Vinnie Johnson impression. Expect Crawford to make like ‘The Microwave’ and provide instant scoring off the bench. And Coach Mike Woodson now has the option to go small with Bibby, Crawford, and Johnson playing together.

This trio complements a young, talented front-court. Hopefully, Josh Smith’s attitude comes somewhat closer to matching his immense talent, while Al Horford is a specimen, capable of posting strong numbers and dominating both ends of the court.

Of course, there are questions. Will restricted free agent Marvin Williams re-sign and continue developing into a solid pro? Can Smith and Woodson’s relationship stand another dust up? Is there the depth to challenge Eastern powers like Boston, Cleveland, and Orlando? If not, will ownership spend enough to win? What about Johnson’s pending free agency in 2010?

Currently, there are no answers. One thing is certain: these Hawks seem better equipped to handle the future then those laughingstocks of years past.

lol... no way in hell are the hawks a contender even with a trigger happy player in crawford... seriously have you actually watched him play? he has to be the most streakiest player in the nba today to avg 20ppg. i am more than certain that he has a low efficiency. if the cavs face the hawks again, they will show you how much of a contender the hawks are... SWEEP!!!!!!!!! .

Should have let Bibby go. He slows down the team, which is good in some cases, but with the athletes on Atlanta, they need a PG that is going to run game in-game out. Crawford is a problem! .

Man the Hawks are gonna raise hell this year with that backcourt. They be able to move Johnson around from the 1,2and 3. Crawford can score with the best of them. I just hope they can trade up for a center Camby in Atlanta would be insane then they could move Horford to the 4 and josh could play on the wing more! But true they need a big down there. What happen to all the post players? Damn I miss star role players .

They still are the 4 best team unless boozer goes to the heat. then they drop to 5. They don’t have enough big men. .

I agree, lacking dependable depth proves to haunt many teams. But the Hawks have a great young group of humble guys. Williams is key, because they need big bodies more than anything. One thing to throw in their, they will probably have to do something big next summer to keep Joe Cool, unless they make the Eastern Conference finals this year. .

Al Horford is going to be a huge key for Atlanta next year. Horford took somewhat of a step back last year, or at least didn’t take that step forward like lots thought he would. Next year he has anchor the load of scoring for the front court if Atlanta wants to take that next step in the East. .

i think atlanta lacks a big man but theyre legit dark horse contenders. theyre dangerous, but i think they still lack depth. plus jamal, hope he ends up fine. i think of all the players, his got the worst winning percentage. he is skillful and fun to watch, but his never been in the playoffs or at least even near it. he also scored 50 for 3 different teams, but his record aint good. so i hope they end up fine at the atl and with joe johnson, josh, al, theyre poised for the future. .

Hi Northern Touch. Thanks for commenting. Like you, I’m bullish on the Hawks talent. Bibby, Crawford, and Johnson are a good look, then throw in Smith, Horford and hopefully Williams! My only concern is that Atlanta regresses back into dysfuction with either the front office or ownership doing something stupid, but it seems unlikely with the strides they’ve made recently. Thanks for weighing-in. .

I absolutely agree and believe the Hawks have the best back court in the league. There’s no reason all three can’t play together seeing as how Johnson is 6’8 and very capable SF and a 6’6 Crawford means they don’t forfeit size. That’s also three guys who averaged over 2 3PM and can run the offense and distribute the ball. And don’t forget, when Bibby’s contract expires, a talented kidd in Jeff Teague may very well be able to take the reins. .
