Not the Champion

June 17 08
This is a special feature by guest blogger Christopher Sells.

It’s easy to forget that whenever a champion is crowned that there is a loser that retreats from the celebration, dejected and feeling that an entire season of blood, sweat and tears was for nothing. So as the Celtics remained on the court, triumphant and jubilant, the Lakers made their way back to the locker room, where there would be no champagne, no happiness and no escaping the feeling that accompanies a 40-point shellacking in the deciding game of the NBA Finals.

There was a feeling of inevitability that came with the Celtics victory. Not only had they held an insurmountable 3-1 lead, they’d outplayed the Lakers, even in their losses. There isn’t any doubt that the Celtics are the better team and that they deserve to raise the franchise’s 17th championship banner to the rafters, especially with their performance in Game Six, as their defense forced the Lakers to accept their fate.

So while much will be written of the Celtics’ Big Three and the journeys they’ve each taken to reach this point, something should be said for the team on the other sideline. The Lakers found out that they were not ready for this stage. The don’t have the toughness or the talent necessary to be the best. Not yet, at least. The team is young and they’ll make some moves and get Andrew Bynum back from injury. Phil Jackson will have to attempt to pass Red Auerbach for most championships at a later time. Kobe will undoubtedly remain hungry.

Ah, Kobe. Much was said before the series began about how this was his chance to prove that he deserved to be mentioned in the same breath as the all-time greats. He’ll lie to you and tell you that he doesn’t wish to be compared with Jordan, that he only wants to be the best Kobe can be, but his entire career has seemingly been patterned after Jordan’s. From the head-to-head matchups in All-Star Games to the on-court mannerisms, many have speculated that Jordan has been Kobe’s measuring stick all along.

Observers have often reveled in his failures, his missteps and shortcomings. Basketball fans seem to have a love/hate relationship with the man, and those that fall into the hate category can go the extra mile, spewing hatred and venom, creating websites as a shrine to what he is not. His passion for the game is questioned, as is his leadership ability and his commitment to his teammates. For these people, the look on Kobe’s face as he left the court probably gave them sheer joy and made their hatefulness worthwhile.

So does this latest failure mean that Kobe can never achieve that ultimate level of greatness? Does it mean that Kobe will only be remembered as a championship sidekick instead of the straw that stirred the drink? Was this his best chance at becoming what many thought he could be: a truly talented player who struggled to find himself early in his career only to realize his greatness as he matured into one of the best to ever cradle a basketball?

These, and other thoughts, were probably on Kobe’s mind as he made that long walk from the court to the locker room, where he would take off his jersey for the last time this season and possibly for the last time in the Finals, defeated.

What now?

Jordan would not have 6 titles without Pippen. Bynum just has to get healthy and Kobe will win 2 to 3 more tiltes. .

there is always hope for kobe and a big chance for Lakers to win the championship its a matter of time, maybe its time for celtics to have those feelings of being the champion and be the best fo this year. Lets give a big respect/credit to the big three of celtics its more than a decade for them to experience their first championship trophy were all nba players also wants it, considering there are so many teams wants to be a world champion in basketball and the chances are too small for everyone and only the best team can win have the trophy. As they said there’s always a time for eveything, well we know that nobody cares for the loser but it doesnt matter losers always do their best and when the time come that you have the championship trophy people out there and your fans forget all the misery you had and shared your victory. Just like the big three in celtics i think they dont too much care if they win or loss the championship next season because they already think that they are one of the best in the entire history of basketball and which is true people will remember them as a champion in year 2008 lets give credit to those guys whose retirement is too close "no offense" they deserved to be a champion and thats what they are fighting for in their nba career. so i encourage to those young nba players keep it up work hard your destiny of winning a championship trophy depends on you but there’s only one secret considering that everyone is a professional player dont forget to PRAY thats the secret .

People act as if the rest of the west are going to make no moves this off-season.... Remember if Yao Ming doesn’t go down the lakers would go seven agains Houston, and if Manu Ginolbi isn’t injured that series goes seven and if the Lakers had to play the Hornets they would’ve lost that one as well..... Rember when the Houston Rockets had The Dream and Ralph Sampson (Two seven footers) and they still came up short.... If the lakers get a bad match up they may not make it back to the Conference Finals.... .

Lakers are in the Wild West, and the celtics are in the Easy East!... the celtics got lucky! and the Lakers prob the best team in the playoffs! they just killed every team they come up 2! unlucky they just played bad Vs Celtics... Lakers and KB24 will be back nxt yr! they might need to get another Vet on the team! for the bench! thats about it! Celtics will never be back in the finals again! like-wise for Lebron James! if he is the best player ever he would already be a champion! he is very over-rated! .

Well, i proved my theory.triangle offense/defense will not work out if all of your teamate wants the ball..they forgot to pass, guard their man, just all waiting for the ball. With the bulls, they are UNSELFISHED.kerr, paxson or whoever.as long they are in the right position, that’s why there’s a word, PATIENCE and OPTION. with the lakers, Damn .

Jordan needed Pippen, yes. But he also needed the Paxson’s, Kerr’s, Rodmans, Horace Grant’s, B.J. Armstrongs, Kukoc’s and all the other "Role" players who carried out the hard stuff. Until Kobe’s gets a teammate that is tough and physical like a Rodman or a Horace Grant (This is where Bynum was missed severely) and a pure shooter - someone who’s automatic from the 3pt line he will struggle to win a title. Imagine the Lakers when Bynum is back and you have Gasol at PF and Odom at Small Fwd. Pick up a pure 3pt shooter and you’ll be guaranteed a championship - Jordan had 2 of the purest shooters ever in Paxson and Kerr which opened things up for him. Boston were able to crowd things up if they had to cover another pure shooter it would’ve opened up their D. .

I agree Jordan without Big Nose wouldn’t have been as successful. He’d be in the same spot as Kobe and LeBron .

To the blogger that said no Jordan without Pippen, you have been reading my mind. I have always said, If it were not Pippen, there would be no Jordan. Lets just hope Jordan understands that! .

OMG if the lakers traded for starbury I would kill myself. Kobe, Pau, Odom, Gasol, and fisher will be back in the finals next year and the year after that. I was happy to see Garnet win it all, but let’s face it, this was not an even match-up. The Lakers were together for only 3-4 months, were missing a key player, nad missing their best defender for the whole season. Watch out next year. The drive to the next championship begins today for Kobe Bryant! .

3 SUPERstars? paul pierce and KG yes, but ray ray is no superstar any more. he was lucky ro be called an all star this season (turkoglu was robbed) and his performances this year have not been on that level of what a superstar should be. their big three is KG, P.P and rondo now. ray allen is now just a shooter. and the celtics are flat out old. maybe 1 more year but the lakers are young. kobe aint even 30. bynum is barely an adult. gasol is young and his softer game will allow more years in the league. there bench looks as though they could be playin high school ball. and as much as i love a 6’10 dude who can dribble as a guard, there gonna want to get rid of odom. he just doesnt fit the plan. and when fisher does get too old, there is plenty of worthy point guards out there who can bring that vet leadership, sweet shot and good ball movement. i say lakers can compete at the top for another 4-5 years. and may kobe please win a championship without shaq. he needs to. or else there is no point even comparing to jordan... .

Even if the lakers do get to the finals next year wich i hope but i doubt considering they’re playing in the wild west and anyone there can go all the way to the finals) Boston will be there waiting having had a more comfortable season in the East and with 3 superstars in their team.Kobe needs to score 40 points a game and the rest of the lakers need to play aggresively. And look at the macthups..the Lakers need Bynum so they can stop Garnett and focus on defending other players.. .

"last time in the finals..."??? are u kidding me? kb24 and the lakerz will definetly be there again next year. off-season changes will be made and the team will come back next year stronger. but for now, the celtics are champs. they faught herd all year long and deserve it. i agree, the lakerz werent ready this year. they had plenty of obstacles to go thru this year. congrats to the celtics for their hard earned win. GO LAKERZ!!! ’09 is the year!!!!! =D .
