One Year Later, Who Won Allen Iverson Trade: Philadelphia 76ers or Denver Nuggets?

January 07 08

My Very Quick Take: Judging trades can be tricky. We try to determine the winner and loser right after the trade happens.

With future considerations, draft picks, and cap space, taking a long-term approach is much more prudent. Time is usually needed to determine the real winner.

Is 384 days enough time? I ask because on December 20, 2006, the Philadelphia 76ers and Denver Nuggets exchanged an answer. Remember, the Iverson trade?

Last night, these teams met for the second time since the infamous blockbuster. The Nuggets won 109-96. Iverson went off for 38 points and 8 assists.

Who won this trade? One year later, let’s take another look.

Philadelphia Received:

  • Andre Miller, Joe Smith, and a pair of first round draft picks (Jason Smith, 2007).

Denver Received:

  • Allen Iverson and Ivan McFarlin.

Winner (one year later): Denver.

Why: Both teams did well with this deal. The 76ers had to move Iverson; Andre Miller has solidified their point guard spot with his fine decision-making. However, Miller could soon be moved, which would add another twist to this saga. And Philadelphia still has another first round draft pick to use.

Iverson has made the greater impact. He’s teamed with Carmelo Anthony and Marcus Camby to give the Nuggets a mile-high version of The Big Three. With Iverson in the mix, Denver has become a dangerous team.

Well if/when Philly trades Miller and gets something valuable in return, that helps them in determining whether or not they won this trade. If they trade Dre for draft picks, I would definitely say Philly won the trade. .

Philly got the better of the deal. No team with Iverson on their team will ever win the championship, because he plays shooting guard instead of point guard. Philadelphia is now able to build for the future. .

As a sixers fan, I think Denver made out. The loss of Joe Smith helped ease the cap burdens that Billy King hampered the team with. However, it would have been better if the 76ers made better use of the picks. The first Denver pick we got in the deal was Jason Smith, who looks pretty good for a rookie. The second 1st round pick, however, was traded to Golden State on draft night for cash. Another of King’s mistakes in my opinion. Glen Davis would have been a good pick for this team, especially since the PW position is where the team’s main weakness is right now. Reggie Evans is a nice player off the bench, but he should not be starting. .

I agree. Half of the assets that Philly acquired the deal were gone less than one year later and Miller might be gone sooner than later, although I don’t think so. .

Without a doubt Denver got the better deal. Especially when all signs point to the Sixers shipping out Miller soon. I still think that Denver is a trade or two away from being real contenders but bringing in AI was a HUGE leap forward. .
