Pat Riley To Blame For Miami Heat’s ’Penny’ Hardaway Fiasco

December 13 07

Miami’s Pat Riley discusses waiving Penny Hardaway and signing Luke Jackson:

Pat Riley labeled it a "business decision." But that decision could mean the end of Penny Hardaway’s brilliant NBA career.

The Heat waived Hardaway on Wednesday to make room for Luke Jackson, a young, 6-foot-7 swingman whose strength is his outside shot. Hardaway, 36, not only was the most logical player to cut from a basketball standpoint, but, with a non-guaranteed contract, he was the only one the Heat could have lost without having to absorb any salary.

My Very Quick Take: Another blunder made by Riley.

The oil-slick failed to sign a big name free agent this summer, so he went 1994 and brought in Penny Hardaway to help off the bench. The former All-Star had been out of the league for two seasons and, with the exception of one strong game, never looked comfortable in a Heat uniform.

Hardaway can still contribute, but he needs the right situation. Riley, however, is very much on the hook for this failed experiment. Here’s why:

1) Hardaway was signed to serve as a back-up. With Miami struggling, the Gucci sideline boss gave the veteran extended minutes. This was too much, too soon.

2) Riley admitted he wanted to keep Hardaway despite his struggles. However, the Heat had to free a roster spot for Jackson and Penny was expendable due to his non-guaranteed contract.

However, Miami could have retained Hardaway if they hadn’t signed Smush Parker over the summer. Of course, the Smush-signing was also Riley’s idea.

All is not lost. Hardaway will stay ready and, if unsigned, Miami might bring him back later this year.

Penny is productive and plays smart basketball...it is amazing how fickle fans can be when a player is injured....he is conditioned, his injuries are gone, he doesn’t need the money and he is in better shape than most nba players in their 30’s...most of the loosers that make negative coments about Penny could not play him one on one .

Contrasting with Grant Hill, Penny has been passive and weak. I used to like him a lot but now it’s time for Penny to say goodbye. No more "what if he plays in a winning team" kind of BS, please. .

Don’t want to state the obvious, but the guy did take on a stumbling team in mid season and lead them to a championship—I’m just saying... .

They didn’t sign him, and he ain’t make them any better, plus they picked up Ricky Davis, just so they found a dumb taker for fat azz Antonie Walker, it was an upgrade in that aspect, other wise I agree with the lst comment .

I WOULDN’T SAY (PENNY’S) WASHED UP.....I THINK HE CAN STILL BE PRODUCTIVE IF HE PLAYED FOR A WINNING FRANCHISE COMING OFF THE BENCH. .

What did they expect a 36-year-old washed up Penny Hardaway to do? Turn in the player he was in the mid-90’s. Riley sucks at running a franchise, I haven’t seen one good decision he has made in bringing in players his entire enture as head man. Also remember folks he had to be convinced to take DWade, by the GM, Riley really wanted, gasp Chris Kaman. Like Penny it’s time for Riley to go .
