Paul Pierce’s Weight Loss & Early Move Shows Commitment To Ray Allen, Kevin Garnett, & Boston Celtics

August 14 07

The Boston Globe reports on Paul Pierce changing his off-season routine:

‘‘The last couple years, I played at 240, 245, but I think I’m going to go back down to my college weight and play at 230,’’ he said. ‘‘I’m at, like, 238 now. Playing at 240 or 245 is not bad, but I want to come in lighter and faster.

‘‘I’m focusing on my defense, being able to guard all three positions. The stuff I think about is if I have to go to shooting guard and defend and take pressure off Ray [Allen]. I don’t need that much extra weight. I just want the footwork and quickness to guard shooting guards.’’

With the exception of a trip to next week for a promotional shoe tour and a few days back in LA to pack, Pierce plans to be in the Boston area for the remainder of the offseason. He hopes Allen and Kevin Garnett can soon join him for informal workouts.

‘‘We’re going to come together in another week or two, get together a little early, just start getting to know each other on the basketball court, hang out a little bit off the court,’’ said Pierce. ‘‘We’ll probably do that out here.

My Quick Take: Want the truth about The Truth? Some argue Pierce never fully committed himself to being a superstar. Most nights, he was very good, getting his numbers in a disappointing loss. On some nights, like the game against Cleveland two years ago when he dropped an epic 50 on LeBron James, The Truth was brilliant, flashing a glimpse of his full potential.

Forget Pierce’s always-solid stats. Over the years, his game leveled off; the losing and Boston’s lack of direction had taken its toll.

Bringing in Ray Allen and Kevin Garnett has changed things. Boston is relevant again. And Pierce seems motivated to take his game to the next level, elevating his play from perennial All-Star to all-world superstar.

Losing fifteen pounds is a start. Pierce was never overweight, but his lighter frame will improve his defense and prevent injuries.

Allen, Pierce, and Garnett will have no trouble developing chemistry. Good players should always be able to play together. Coming to Boston early for informal workouts and off-court bonding can only help Pierce gel with his new teammates.

Star or superstar? Pierce has a choice. His most recent decisions show that he’s interested in being the latter.

If P2 drops 15 pounds we are gona be seeing flashes of what he did in 03 when they were fighting to get into the NBA Finals. He’s gona be able to what he does best and that is slash through the whole without getting triple teamed like he has the last few years. If teams decide to help he can kick to an open Ray Allen or Reggie Miller, or dish to KG for an easy flush. This team just needs a little depth and a step up on the defnsive end and i dont see how anyone in the east can compete with them. .

i see all 3 as superstars. youre right that pierce has tailed off but he’s still capable........ all 3 have took teams to 50+ wins (paul 49, ray and kg twice and both did it in west, ray once in west), all 3 took teams to division titles and conference finals...... all 3 have been top 10 for the mvp (KG WON IT!)....... all 3 are elite at their position and ranked top 3 at their position in nba player rankings and top 15 overall (kg 2nd at pf and 5th overall, ray 3rd at sg and 14th, paul 3rd at sf and 13th)............ all 3 complement each other beautifully, have come up huge in big games, are unselfish fiercely loyal franchise players that are great leaders, team players, play the right way, leave it all on the court, love the game, and have done it all but win a ring....... theyre all at the same stage and hungry as hell for a ring and they are 3 A+ all-nba superstars! team is gonna be special for the next 4 or 5 years, theyre gonna win some rings, definitely....... its amazing, i wish danny ainge was my teams gm (never thought id say that). .

oh yeah it takes your game to a whole new level when your enthusiastic and excited about the game. it will be more fun if reggie miller came back, nothing makes a thirty something year old feel younger than seing a sixty year old making shots. imagine last minute, you have kg, ray allen, reggie miller and paul pierce coming at you. who will you guard? .

Ya’ll know that Paul Pierce is a stud man, cmon dont hate. A guy dropping 25 a night with 6 rebs and 6 assists? Ya’ll gotta be trippin. Having those kinds of numbers in the NBA? the NBA. Best league in the world. But hey, I get your point. He actually kinda slowed down these last few years. He was only injured last year. When was the last? well, back when he got stabbed, he missed 10 games. Cmon man you gotta be a legit superstar with those credentials. He can’t do it alone, just like every superstar, he cant bring his team to the next level. Now that he has 2 superstars, I’m tellin ya’ll The Truth will show you the truth. Word .
