Phoenix Suns Should Not Trade Shawn Marion Straight-Up For Utah Jazz’s Andrei Kirilenko

October 15 07

Sam Smith, a writer for The Chicago Tribune, argues that Utah and Phoenix would both benefit from trading Andrei Kirilenko for Shawn Marion.

Finally, an exhibition game to get excited about. Is it possible Shawn Marion and Andrei Kirilenko will be traded for one another at halftime Monday when the Jazz plays the Suns? Could Kirilenko and Marion play against their former teams in the second half? They’d have to pass physicals quickly

Hard to figure why this deal hasn’t happened yet. Here are the NBA’s two unhappiest stars this side of Kobe Bryant, and there’s good reason for each team to make the deal. Both teams say there’s nothing going on. You have to wonder why.
My Quick Take: Smith is one of the NBA’s best reporters. For several seasons, he has provided in-depth coverage as an NBA writer for The Chicago Tribune.

I disagree with this morning’s article. Smith’s view is that the Jazz and Suns would both prosper from swapping unhappy forwards-again, Kirilenko for Marion. He claims the trade would be mutually beneficial for both sides and supports his stance with reasonable examples. Fair enough.

Smith then claims that Marcus Banks’ salary is holding up the trade. Basically, Phoenix demanded that Utah take Banks’ salary as part of any trade for Marion. And Larry Miller, the Jazz’s owner and de facto GM, said no.

I see it differently. The Suns should come to their senses and keep Marion. Here’s why:

  • The Matrix has world-class speed. His quickness sets up Phoenix’s entire seven seconds to shoot offense. This hi-paced system is what they do best.
  • Robert Sarver, Phoenix’s owner, wants his team to maintain financial flexibility. Marion has two years left on his max contract, while Kirilenko has four years and $63 million dollars remaining on his deal. The Suns, with AK-47, would be adding salary, while getting worse. Sarver apparently signed off on some sort of Kirilenko-for-Marion deal, which I don’t get.
  • Marion’s flexibility is an asset. Phoenix can go small and use him at the four-spot. Kirilenko can’t play power forward, so the Suns would lose that edge with the Russian in their line-up.
Phoenix coach Mike D’Antonio had a long European career, so he has a soft spot for international stars like Kirilenko. D’Antonio must realize that Marion straight-up for Kirilenko is not a fair deal. The Suns must get more in return.

who cares if AK47 gets better at the suns? its a bad trade because he doesnt suit their game. marion can play pretty good D and drops way more points than AK. rebounds are pretty even, passing isnt needed for them since they got deron and nash. marion is faster, dunks better and i havent seen him on a poster have u? check this: lebron coming down the lane so marion moves so he doesnt look like an idiot. now this: baron davis coming in the lane and AK47 decides to make a fool of himself. yep. that proves marion is smarter as well. marion is WAYYYYYYYYYYY more consistent! he continually puts up double doubles and u really think u can trust AK after last season??? nahuh! suns dont trade marion unless they wanna give u more like taking banks and giving them say... milsap? .

Last time I checked AK was playing inside when boozer was out. that’s considering Utah’s a half-court grind-it-out team. How the hell can’t he play the 4 in Phoenix’s small bal run & gun system. AK is a perfect fit there if you ask me. He is a WAAAAAY better passer than Marion and his shotblocking will help cover defensive lapses by his defensively challlenged teammates. He thrives in up-tempo (see playoffs against GSW) .

Utah is doing everything possible to make Kirilenko more happy. He seems pretty comfortable so far in the preseason. Larry Miller, the owner, asked Coach Sloan to make sure AK gets pampered. Sloan has coached the Jazz for 20 years, this is the first time Miller has done anything but kissed Sloan’s butt. I think that they will give AK what he wants, and see how he plays until the trade deadline. If the old Kirilenko comes to play, filling up the stat sheets like he did in his all-star season, the Jazz will keep him. They will look to make a deal closer to the deadline if he has a better season, but is still unhappy. Which, if he is, he should wake up and play well enough to make a trade possible. .

I agree. You guys going after this reporter is a joke. He’s not in the business of getting it right; he’s in the business of giving his opinion that is why it is called My Quick Take ... Your critiques come from a position of slanted bias ... Basically, he said something you don’t like about your favorite team ... Take off the pom-poms you cheerleaders ..... Dude more than holds his own on most topics .

"The Matrix has speed."and "Kirilenko can’t play power forward"Before you write something, become informed. Your points have no substance. AK-47 becomes an all-star and DPOY as a Sun. .

I was ready to let it fly. But thanks to the posts before me, I don’t have to. Kinky was an all-star when he was playing at the PF. And it was the Jazz who that killed the deal — Thank God! .

No the Suns shouldn’t trade him. They should send him to LA in a package for Kobe. Not to Utah for a whining bum .

When did Kirilenko have the most success 2002-2003 at PF. Four years ago ... There’s no way Sarver said that ... if he wanted long-term he would have chased KG ... And the author said that the Jazz have been turning this thing down because of Banks ... .
