Ray Allen, Kevin Garnett, Paul Pierce, & Boston Celtics Add James Posey’s Defense

August 25 07

ESPN.com reports on James Posey finding a new home:

The Celtics used most of the remainder of their mid-level exception to sign Posey, who spent the past two seasons with the Miami Heat.

The nine-year veteran will be joining his fifth NBA team, having spent four seasons in Denver, one in Houston, two in Memphis and two in Miami. The defensive specialist is the third significant role player lost by the Heat to free agency this summer, joining Jason Kapono, who signed with Toronto, and Eddie Jones, who agreed to a contract with Dallas.

My Quick Take: Jesus Shuttlesworth, The Big Ticket, and The Truth have a new teammate: James Posey. The Boston Celtics continued to add veterans to their revamped roster, signing Posey to a two year, seven million dollar contract on Saturday.

The Ray Allen, Kevin Garnett, and Paul Pierce trio gives the Celts a legit shot at winning the Larry O’Brien trophy in June. But Boston needed a lockdown defender; their own version of Bruce Bowen or Raja Bell.

Enter Posey. The long swing has played the stopper role before, helping the Heat win the 2006 NBA Title. He also has outside range and can punish opposing defenses for doubling-up on Allen, Garnett, and Pierce.

But Posey has baggage; word is he lacks professionalism. In just the last year, he’s had issues with drunk driving and was suspended by Miami during the season for poor fitness and conditioning.

Still, there’s plenty of upside with Posey. And three million dollars per season of the mid-level exception is cheap, a drop in the bucket for a nine year veteran.

What do you think of the Celtics signing Posey? Let us know in the comment box below.

Garnett, Perkins, Rondo, and Tony Allen are tough defenders and Posey helps tighten the screws in crunch time. As far as needing a point guard, Rondo is the real deal. He’s the fastest point in the league, has great hands and a good head for the game. I expect he’ll deliver. .

Posey is a hard worker indeed! The c’s went all out. I love it, I absolutely love it. finally a season worth waiting on. I’m still waiting on my pistons to make some moves but just watching the C’s right remind me of when the laker’s built a dominant team. Unfortunately they didn’t win, losing to the great 2004 Detroit Pistons. The Big up to danny Ainge, I glad to see his nuts finally dropped he not a puppy anymore. ha ha Hoo Rah!!! .

The Cs would have been better off getting someone like PJ Brown to sign on the dotted line. They are in dire need of frontcourt help. Posey will be a contributer for sure, but not the exact player that they needed. I guess beggars (with their limited salary cap position) can’t be choosers. .

Boston should trade Ray allen for allen Iverson, and have Iverson play the point. Pierce can play his natural sg spot and Posey or scalabrine could play sf. trade works for both teams, Denver needs a bigger guard, back court of atkins and Iverson way to small especialy in the West. .

MIAMI HEAT WORLD CHAMPIONS 2006
on 08.26.2007
AS A SEASON TICKET HOLDER FOR THE MIAMI HEAT I GOT TO KNOW JAMES POSEY AND CAN SAY HE IS A TRUE PROFESSIONAL WHO CAME TO WORK HARD EVERY DAY AND WAS OUR MOST CONSISTENT PLAYER FOR 82 GAMES OFFENSE AND DEFENSE (NEVER INJURED) IN HIS TWO YEARS WITH MIAMI! AS NORMAL PART OF LIFE FOR ANY INDIVIDUAL HE HAD A SMALL MISUNDERSTANDING WITH A PARKING TICKET PATROL OFFICER WHILE OUT CELEBRATING HIS NBA CHAMPIONSHIP. NOTHING WAS MADE OF THAT AS IT WAS ALL DISMISSED. JAMES, THANKS FOR THE GREAT CHAMPIONSHIP RUN JAMES! YOUR 3’s WERE DEAD ON AND RIGHT ON TIME! THANKS FOR PLAYING HARD EVERY GAME EVEN WHEN IT SEEMED LIKE THINGS WERE NOT GOING OUR WAY AND THE TEAM LACKED FOCUS WHICH SHOWS TRUE PROFESSIONALISM. GOOD LUCK WITH THE CELTICS WHO WILL BE A VERY TOUGH TEAM WITH YOU AND RAY ALLEN GUNNING FROM THE OUTSIDE AND PIERCE AND GARNETT GOING INSIDE. YOUR DEFENSE SEPARATES YOU FROM GUYS LIKE KAPONO (GREAT SHOOTER NO ’D’\1 AND IT WAS THE DIFFERENCE IN US STARTING GAMES DOWN BY 10 IN THE 1st Qtr OR IN CONTROL OF THE GAME AT THE END OF THE 1st Qtr DEPENDING ON WHO RILEY STARTED. I WILL CONTINUE TO BE A BIG FAN EVEN THOUGH ITS TOUGH TO ROOT FOR THE BOSTON CELTICS. YOU ARE FOREVER A CHAMPION AND BRING TO THAT TEAM SOMETHING NONE OF THEM HAS EVER ACCOMPLISHED NOT EVEN COACH DOC RIVERS. A CHAMPIONSHIP RING. GO SHOW EM HOW ITS DONE BROTHER! .

Still no center or point guard. They really need to save their money for a big man. At this price, Posey is a good investment. .
