Re-tool not rebuild: Why Dallas should follow Los Angeles and Boston’s model for success

Should Dallas rebuild or re-tool?

While nothing is definite, many expect Team Cuban to blow things and start over by trading Dirk Nowitzki for a collection of expiring contracts, draft picks, and young prospects.

After all, Dallas is in NBA purgatory -they are strong enough to qualify for the post-season, but not strong enough to contend. And conventional thinking says that teams have to hit rock bottom, collect new assets, and start over before becoming great, right?

Not necessarily.

Re-tooling is also a viable option. Instead of destroying a team that came within a quarter of holding a 3-0 series lead in the NBA Finals, the Mavericks could keep Nowitzki and re-work the players around him.

Rebuilding doesn’t guarantee success because it hinges on having a rare, game-changing player. No blue-chip talent, no improvement. And then a culture of losing sets in. For example, the Vancouver/Memphis Grizzlies are always rebuilding. The post-Garnett Timberwolves with good but not great Al Jefferson are years from the playoffs.

Garnett’s new team, the Boston Celtics, are the best example of how re-tooling can work. Rewind to the summer of 2007. Instead of rebuilding by moving Paul Pierce, GM Danny Ainge re-tooled through exchanging young assets for veterans Ray Allen and Garnett. One year later, the green-and-white raised their seventeenth banner to the ceiling.

The Celtics’ archrival, the Lakers, have also re-tooled. Not long ago, the purple-and-gold was a dysfunctional soap opera –Kobe Bryant wanted out, the Buss family were squabbling, and coach Phil Jackson had lost some Zen.

Give GM Mitch Kupchak credit. He avoided auctioning off ‘Black Mamba’ and decided to improve his superstar’s supporting cast. Derek Fisher was brought back and Pau Gasol was stolen from Memphis. Today, because of re-tooling, Bryant is happy and Los Angeles is back as an elite team.

How can Dallas re-tool?

They could have the cap space to chase free agents in July of 2010. First, they must convince Nowitzki to sign long-term for less than his current twenty million dollar salary. Second, they must decline the team option on underachieving Josh Howard. The Mavs would then have just thirty-five million dollars in committed salary and could offer up a ‘max’ contract.

New coach Rick Carlisle has to continue preaching defense. Years ago, under Avery Johnson, the Mavericks were known for getting stops. That identity has disappeared. Boston, Los Angeles, and San Antonio have proven that caring of your own end ensures success.

Cuban has to again make Dallas a destination. The renegade owner once did the little things that convinced top players to sign for less money. For many reasons, the former reality television star has lost his enthusiasm for the NBA, which has taken some shine off his franchise.

Rebuild or re-tool? Even after their choke job in the NBA Finals and first round loss to Golden State, it isn’t an easy choice for Dallas.

The answer is rebuild, simply because Dirk Nowitski albeit a great scorer is not a superstar nor is he a game changing player. He’s just a taller version of Rashard Lewis, an important star player that a team needs but not the player that puts the team over the top. .

Hi Dominic ... I’m not saying rebuilding or re-tooling is easy. Both are options that should be considered. For me, the Celtics were neither rebuilding or re-tooling before they traded for Allen and Garnett. They were stuck in no-man’s land; for years, Ainge was unsure whether to trade or keep Pierce. As a result, they collected some decent young talent. They lost all those games two years ago only because Pierce was hurt. Before that they were a 30-40 win season that couldn’t decide on a direction. They opted for re-tooling over rebuilding and had success. Thanks for reading, but, respectfully, I’m unsure what you were getting at. Feel free to follow-up if you like. Thanks for taking the time to respond either way .

rebuilding isnt as easy as it sounds. boston developed al jeffersoson for at least 3 years, traded for expiring contracts lke theo ratliff . circled the bottom of the bowl for years while collecting young talent and draft picks.it took d ainge 5 years to do all this before he was able to get ray allen and garnett. .

I opt for re-tool, too. They have that guy in Dirk, you don’t just give former MVPS away. .

Dallas should re-tool. Dallas need these 3 things in order to re-tool 1. Good rebounding defensive center 2. Another superstar to compliment Dirk 3. Athletic player with defensive stops. First things first, Dallas needs someone who could support Dirk’s I-don’t-want-to-play-physical-hardcore-defensive. Camby or Kaveman would be good center to compliment Dirk defensively. Those two centers are currently available for trade since the dumba-------Dunleavy can use those GOOD centers in his team. Second, another superstar is needed to help playoff-choker Dirk. Who could it be? Antawn Jamison. Some people will say he ain’t no superstar. Guess what? He is one of the most underrated star out there. Currently he is available for trade because he is getting old and his contract is way too big for a losing team like Wizards to hold. Plus Gilbert ain’t coming back so might as well start tanking Wizards Last but not least, a athletic player who could use some defensive stops. There is 2 options for this category. First is start training Green into a monster defensive player, or bring in someone who is already good defensive player. Maybe Brewer from Utah or Sefolosha from Chicago. Both young and underrated defensive players. Dallas actually have all the players needed to make that trade happen. Plus the crazy owner Mark Cuban to make it happen. Lets make the game interesting Dallas! .

I agree with this outlook and point. It is easier to build once you have a strong piece like Dirk. Dallas should try to max it out and build around him. Look at Boston with PP. Thanks for the read. .
