Reggie Miller Bashes Isiah Thomas, Stephon Marbury, & New York Knicks

November 29 07

Former Knick killer Reggie Miller comments on the New York franchise:

"Right now, they are a league-wide joke," Miller said. "It’s sad because they are a historic and iconic franchise. But people think they are late night comedy jokes."

"All I know is that Isiah has the talent to make them a playoff-caliber team," Miller said yesterday over the telephone. "With the talent New York has, they should easily be in the top six. Only Orlando and Boston are running away with the conference. New York is not out of it. All they need is a four- or five-game winning streak and they’ve already won two of them."

"It’s disappointing," Miller added. "You always want your best player, which is Stephon Marbury, and head coach to get along. When Steph steps on the court, they’ve got to get on the same page. They’ve got to right the ship. It’s disturbing. He flies home, flies back to L.A. The team votes (for him) not to play. Those are things that can destroy a team. You’ve got to make an example, but he plays him 40 minutes. What is that saying?"

My Quick Take: As a player, Miller was known for knocking down game winning jump shots at Madison Square Gardens. After every clutch basket, Miller would drop some epic trash talk on Knick players, fans, and, of course, Spike Lee.

Below is a flashback …

Miller is now a TNT broadcaster. He pulls no punches when analyzing the state of his former rival.

The former All-Star played his entire career in Indiana. His Pacers, under the guidance of Donnie Walsh and Larry Bird, are a model NBA franchise. So Miller knows how organizations should be run and has the right to judge the dysfunctional Knicks.

Miller is right when saying New York has the talent to make the playoffs. Eddie Curry and Zach Randolph dominate the inside. Stephon Marbury and Jamal Crawford are capable scorers, while David Lee, Renaldo Balkman, and ‘Q’ Richardson are solid role players.

His best point addresses the lack of accountability within the Knick organization. One day Marbury quits the team, the next day he plays forty minutes against the Clippers. What message does this send the other players?

The Knicks used to bring out the best in Miller. His comments show how sad things have become in the NYC.

Reggie had every right in saying what he did because it is true. Look at the team the Pacers had in Isiah’s last 2 years. They were the best team in the NBA with more talent then anyone, and Thomas just could not lead them. Always out after the first round. Limiting Millers role in a team that he helped build is another story I won’t go into, but needless to say, Pacer fans were happy to see Thomas go. Looks like he is doing for the Knicks just like he did for the Pacers. .

Rippin on the Knicks...a bold move...all they have done is let incompetent management run the franchise into the ground. Is that so bad? .
