Relax Toronto Raptor fans: Nathan Jawai is NOT another Hoffa Araujo

July 12 08

Team Euro has hit up another continent for talent. Yesterday, the Toronto Raptors inked 2008 second round pick Nathan Jawai to a two-year contract, making the 6-11, 285 pound post the first indigenous Australian to ever be drafted and signed by an NBA side.

This is news for two reasons. First, as mentioned earlier, Jawai is breaking ground as the first indigenous Aussie to get involved with The Association. Very cool stuff. Second, some Raptor fans fear their newest addition is the reincarnation of super-bust Hoffa Araujo.

You remember Hoffa, right? Marshmallow body. Weak skill-set. At 24 years old, he was drafted by former Toronto GM Rob Babcock eighth overall in 2004, ahead of the explosive Andre Iguodala.

Their fear is understandable. Raptor fans want to avoid another Hoffa like homeowners want to avoid lending institutions that default on trillions in mortgages.

Living in reality is also important and these two are night-and-day different. Araujo was old, slow, and talent-less, while Jawai is just 21, active, and possesses range and moves.

Don’t believe me? Check out Jawai’s rookie season in Australia’s National Basketball League.

Two things jump out at me. First, Jawai dominates the paint- a revolutionary concept in today’s NBA, where posts camp on the perimeter and hoist jump shots. Of course, NBA fours and fives are bigger than those in the NBL, but Jawai should be okay.

Second, I love how he sets picks. Many of Jawai’s points came from setting screens on-and-off the ball. Point guard Jose Calderon could have a field day finding him on pick-and-rolls to the basket or pick-and-pop plays.

Look for the Australian to have a nice career. And Raptor fans won’t curse and think what could’ve been with Iguodala when they watch him. In some respects, without playing a minute in the NBA, Jawai is already far ahead of Araujo.

Boom or bust? What do you think of Toronto signing Jawai? Get at us in the comment box below and come back to HoopsVibe The Blog for more NBA tidbits. Image courtesy of photographer K-Billz’s on-line portfolio.

I did a rather indepth look a Jawai. I talked with folks in Australia about him. So I know he ain’t anything close to Hoffa, and as the article says this guy in not anything like Hoffa, He will also not be under the pressure that Hoffa was by being drafted WAY TOO HIGH .

did anyone check jawai last summer league game ??nice box score for only 17min and a kid that has only been playing for 4 years, and his 2nd game of NBA granted the level of competition is the greatest but it is a pretty good indication that a guy in his 2nd start can post similar stats as a 3 year pro in joey graham we are all in for a few surprises this season, i dont think the C’s will be as potent this season they have lost Posey which if you have a look over the coarse of the playoffs and the season he played a huge roll, I think that Raps have a good combination now to move forth and with one potential allstar PG instead of 2 i think it will be easier for the coaching staff to plan and play good structured bball, if they can stay health i think that they are good for better than 50% and a better run in the finals seeing them advance more then 1st round maybe conference semi’s. .

Jermaine o’neal and Jawai can be twin towers, bot are tall and has a hard defense. raptors also had amazing offense, shooters like bosh etc. and 3 pointer like parker etc. mid range shooter calderon etc. I’m sure if jawai will be on Raptors , raptors will win their division and has a 60+% to win playoffs...FOR ME.... .

RAPTORS can win their division again and can be playoff team. defense (o’neal and jawai) good offense (BOSH) 3pointer (Parker) Mid range shooter (Calderon) . I am excited for the result of the next season for RAPTORS... .

Nathan is a good a physical player and is described as a shaq type player because of the way he plays with his power. But I don’t get why raptors chase down big men, why can,t they go after a low post swingman that averages 20.0 per game like rip hamilton, shawn marion or jamaal crawford. .

I think Nathan will do well you all have to remember he only picked up a basketball for the first time 4 years ago i can see his potential with a good guidance, wieghts program and diet i think he has a real future, the NBA lacks good power players and those that can master the craft go on to do quite well, playing under bosh and O’Neil wont do him any harm either and now that Calderon will have a little more freedom on the court the raps should do well this season..i think considering they picked him up in such a good deal i think Jawai will be a diamond in the ruff pick that will go on to be a consistent contributer to what ever NBA club he plays for remember its not just the starting five that wins championships. .

Hi John. Thanks for your comments and info. Yeah, he looks, just from watching clips, like a guy who could still develop physically. Through lifting and training etc. What he is doing now, as you mentioned, seems to be all natural. It will be interesting to see how his career progresses, the tools for success are there, no doubt. Thanks for info and for reading. .

When Jawai came back to Australia from Midland college in Texas he wasn’t expected to achieve much. Instead he played second tier pro ball and exploded on the scene, then getting called up to the NBL. There again he was firing on all cylinders from day one. Perhaps his only real failure in his rookie NBL season was that he would tire easily, but that’s understandable, as the guy is naturally well built and had never really bothered with weight training or developing his endurance. That is something he has rectified to a large degree in this past off-season. .

Not sure, even with the signing of O’Neal, if the Raptors are for certain a top four in the East. Boston and Detroit are still ahead of them. Then there’s Cleveland, Orlando, Philly, Washington and T.O that are part of that next tier. Of course, Chicago will probably be better too. .

I like Jawai. He’ll be a second-team rookie of the year. And the Raptors will Be A TOP FOUR team in the East. .
