Report: Sam Cassell Gets Buyout, Eyeing Boston Celtics, Dallas Mavericks, & Denver Nuggets

February 26 08

My AM Take: Sam Cassell will get his wish. Today, the L.A. Clippers will hand him a seven-figure check (a lovely parting gift for his troubles) and waive him. Then he’ll be free to ink a contract with a contending team.

Put aside your morals because this transaction reeks. Forget that Cassell had a contract with the Clippers, but campaigned for a buyout like a candidate wanting your vote in the upcoming American election.

This is the business/culture of the NBA. Players can be gainfully employed by one team, earning millions of dollars, but can still lobby to join another team. Occasionally, the player gets rewarded with a buyout, too.

I can’t hate on Cassell. He used an accepted practice to better his situation. So where will he sign?

1) Boston Celtics …

The Celtics are interested. They’d like Cassell to spell starter Rajon Rondo. But the veteran’s tight relationship with Kevin Garnett was an issue in Minnesota, so the green-and-white could first try for Brent Barry.

2) Dallas Mavericks …

Team Cuban likes the flashy moves. Dallas pulled off two trades for Jason Kidd; now they want Cassell as his back-up. The Mavericks are certainly gearing up for a playoff run.

3) Denver Nuggets …

The Nuggets have dropped three straight. Their superstars, Carmelo Anthony and Allen Iverson, are frustrated because the club nixed a proposed deadline deal for Ron Artest. So Cassell could help on-court and also appease ‘Melo and The Answer.

Will Cassell sign with Boston, Dallas, or Denver? Get at us in the comment box below with your thoughts. The AM Take is Oly’s morning thoughts on the NBA appearing Sunday through Friday on HoopsVibe.com. Errors can be attributed to the time and his need for another coffee.

Curious what you mean by "tight relationship... was an issue". Wouldn’t that usually be a good thing? I don’t know all the history, but KG and Sam were successful together. Rondo is loved and appreciated by fans and I think his teammates. Adding Sam should not interfere with Rondo’s success, hopefully he would welcome the mentorship. Not sure Brent Barry would fit. Can he defend Chauncy? Can Cassell?? .
